Trip Report The graduation trip that finally happened!

Hello! We are back and I am ready to share our trip with everyone!

Who:
2022-06-16 - Disney Dream - Disney Dream_4.jpeg

Me (Amy), my husband Brian, Owen (14), Lily (17), and Logan (19) (And it appears that I am now the shortest in the family!!)

Why: We were celebrating Logan's high school graduation (which happened to be last year, but as most of you already know, our cruise was cancelled last summer)

Where: Port Canaveral, Miami, The Dream, and Animal Kingdom Lodge

When: June 12-23, 2022

Our goal was to leave the house by 1 or 1:30am on Sunday, June 12. My alarm went off at midnight and Brian and I quickly showered and rounded up the kids who never went to bed. We quickly loaded the car and were pulling out of the McDonald's parking lot with 2 large Cokes at 1:20! I always start the drive as I don't sleep well in the car and Brian does, so he sleeps a little longer initially so he can then take over. It was raining when we left and quickly turned into a downpour. Cincinnati is a huge obstacle course of orange cones, lane closures, and lane shifts which is difficult to navigate at the best of times, but was horrendous in the pitch black with the pouring rain! Brian checked the satellite and assured me that it would stop once we got into Kentucky. I was never so happy to see the Brent Spence bridge...only to met by even harder rain in Covington! Brian said, "whoops! I guess it followed us!" He got a not very nice look from me! Luckily, it did stop raining shortly and I got us all the way through Kentucky and into Tennessee. I was still feeling awake enough to keep driving, so I got us to Knoxville and navigated our new route onto 40 to start heading east. Brian then took over and I got a few pics along the way since it was more scenic than our normal trip straight down 75.

You'll have to pardon the bug guts on our windshield! We couldn't keep up with keeping the windshield clean!

We went through several tunnels.

The reason they are called the Great Smoky Mountains:

We saw quite a few hot air balloons at one point.

We eventually hit 26 and then 95. I wouldn't say the traffic was necessarily any better than 75, but Brian was happy to not have to drive through Atlanta and it was much more scenic!

We finally saw this at about 1:30pm:

We had stopped shortly before that, so no one wanted to stop at the Welcome Center for me!
We finally were able to experience Buc-ee's for ourselves! It was quite an experience and almost overwhelming!
20220612_142058.jpg

We pulled into our hotel in Port Canaveral about 4:30pm.
20220612_163111.jpg

We stayed in the Home2Suites side. It was odd to have 2 different hotels under the same roof since they shared the pool and had the same breakfast offerings.
We unloaded the car and debated what we would have for dinner. Some of us wanted pizza and some wanted seafood. The pizza people won out since there was a pizza place right across the street.

We should have had seafood!!

There was lots of construction on the pier, so it took longer than it should have, but we eventually made it to our vans and loaded up. They required us to have masks on in the van and everyone was supposed to wear them while indoors at Atlantis as well, but that did not happen!

We were quickly on our way. Our driver was very informative about the history of Nassau and the current happenings. He chastised us for complaining about the price of a gallon of gas here in the US, as it is much higher down there. We could see The Dream as we crossed the bridge to Paradise Island which is where Atlantis is located.

I covet one of these plates! They aren't available for sell on any of the Disney sites that I have found.
I've looked on Ebay occasionally and the prices are astonishing!
Not sure how those sellers obtain these. :cautious:
Yeah, the only thing I have seen for sale by Disney is the butter knife (seen in the picture with Lily's mac and cheese). I'm guessing people somehow slip plates into bags.

Sorry for the like fest, but I am absolutely loving your photos!! You seriously have some really great ones of the family, and you and Brian! I've only been on one cruise, but I think it's a great idea for families. I'm just more of a destination person (get me there so I can relax!) and we didn't find out until boarding that we were on the Rick Springfield fan cruise. It was an experience for sure!

No
As a family of 5, is it cheaper to have two verandah rooms? Or is there a suite option that could work? (I’ve never looked into it, but wondered if the cruises are as geared towards the ‘family of 4’ as the park hotels are!)
If I may add my nickel (inflation), we use to cruise a lot on DCL. Once the kids got a little bigger we started getting two ocean view connecting rooms instead of the family veranda room. The two OV rooms were cheaper than the one veranda and we had more space and….wait for it…we had two bathrooms.

Thanks! And no need to be sorry!

The two bathrooms was definitely my reason to book 2 staterooms!

Once we arrived at Atlantis, they made us connect to their free wi-fi and sign a waiver. The problem was the connection wasn't very good and they wanted you to turn off airplane mode and then then each individual person had to fill one out. It took way longer than it should have and they were not helpful at all. I was very frustrated that I couldn't have filled these out ahead of time through the DCL website where I signed up for the excursion, or signed paper ones while I was waiting on the ship for all of the stragglers to get there! Regardless, we eventually got our wrist bands and were on our way. There were not clear directions to get to the water park part of the complex and we had a little difficulty finding it, but we eventually go there. I didn't take very many pics on the way there because we were kind of lost, but I got plenty later!

We finally made it and chose chairs in the shade. It wasn't the best location, but it was easy to find and near a bathroom, so we took it! Here was the view from our chairs:
20220617_104305.jpg

I'm not a big water park fan and I was worried about our bag and cooler, so I relaxed in the chair and read most of the day. I did get into the pool a few times to cool off, but was pretty content to just sit there. Brian and the kids were not very impressed with any of the slides or rivers. I'm glad we did it once, but don't feel the need to repeat the experience! Brian came back and wanted to sit for awhile, so Logan and I walked around so I could get some pics.

This is the plunge slide that was near our chairs. Brian and Logan said it was lame.
20220617_141038.jpg

There was also a slide that took you in a tube through the shark tank. Lily and Owen said it was really boring!

We were supposed to catch our transport vans back to the pier between 3 and 4, but everyone was done and ready to go back by 2:00. We took our time gathering everything up and visiting the bathrooms, then we headed back to the main building. Pics on the way:

Once again, no clear indication where we needed to be, but there was a group ahead of us that we knew was also from The Dream and we saw them talking to someone from the resort and just followed them to the pick up area. The van ride was quick and they dropped us off right where they had picked us up. We didn't even have to walk through the Straw Market and fight off the vendors. Customs was quick and easy and then we were on our way back to the ship.

Lunch had been truly forgettable, so we headed up to Deck 11 for some ice cream!

This is my life’s mission for September 5-9! Oh, and I guess Remy, too. Or whatever. If I have room left in my belly after banana soft serve for breakfast, brunch, lunch…
It is soooo good! They didn't have it the first day on the ship, so don't get discouraged if it isn't there, just keep checking!! It was also on Castaway Cay.

I'm not sure what happened to the individual ones of Logan and Brian!

We started with bread service, Multigrain and Country Currant rolls with Chickpea-Garlic Puree
20220617_175228.jpg

Lily had another salad and everyone else had North Atlantic Lobster Ravioli
20220617_180840.jpg

I took this pic to remind me that we saw dolphins out the window during dinner. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a picture of the dolphins, but the kids really enjoyed getting to see them.
20220617_181558.jpg

Brian and I had the Heirloom Tomato Soup
20220617_182048.jpg

Brian, Logan, and I had the Slow-Roasted Prime Rib
20220617_182954.jpg

Owen had the Slow Roasted Breast of Chicken
20220617_183024.jpg

And Lily had mac and cheese again, so no pic!

The lighting changes throughout the course of the dinner.

Brian, Lily, and I had the Chocolate Brownie Sundae for dessert (sorry about the bad pic!)
20220617_190108.jpg

Owen had a raspberry cheesecake from the kids menu
20220617_190237.jpg

Logan had the Southern Style Pecan Tart
20220617_190241.jpg

You can also see the Warm Sticky Date Pudding in the back of that picture. That is the dessert our server, Frank, recommended, so he brought one for us to try.

He also brought a Celebration dessert for Logan since this was technically his graduation trip. (Logan took the candle out before I could get a pic)
20220617_190530.jpg

Then our assistant server, Anand, made an origami rose with a napkin. Then he surprised us all by presenting it to Logan! (I think Frank was more surprised than any of us about who he presented it to! It was so funny!)

20220617_191419.jpg

Then we made our way out of the restaurant.
