Trip Report The graduation trip that finally happened!

Hello! We are back and I am ready to share our trip with everyone!

Who:
2022-06-16 - Disney Dream - Disney Dream_4.jpeg

Me (Amy), my husband Brian, Owen (14), Lily (17), and Logan (19) (And it appears that I am now the shortest in the family!!)

Why: We were celebrating Logan's high school graduation (which happened to be last year, but as most of you already know, our cruise was cancelled last summer)

Where: Port Canaveral, Miami, The Dream, and Animal Kingdom Lodge

When: June 12-23, 2022

Our goal was to leave the house by 1 or 1:30am on Sunday, June 12. My alarm went off at midnight and Brian and I quickly showered and rounded up the kids who never went to bed. We quickly loaded the car and were pulling out of the McDonald's parking lot with 2 large Cokes at 1:20! I always start the drive as I don't sleep well in the car and Brian does, so he sleeps a little longer initially so he can then take over. It was raining when we left and quickly turned into a downpour. Cincinnati is a huge obstacle course of orange cones, lane closures, and lane shifts which is difficult to navigate at the best of times, but was horrendous in the pitch black with the pouring rain! Brian checked the satellite and assured me that it would stop once we got into Kentucky. I was never so happy to see the Brent Spence bridge...only to met by even harder rain in Covington! Brian said, "whoops! I guess it followed us!" He got a not very nice look from me! Luckily, it did stop raining shortly and I got us all the way through Kentucky and into Tennessee. I was still feeling awake enough to keep driving, so I got us to Knoxville and navigated our new route onto 40 to start heading east. Brian then took over and I got a few pics along the way since it was more scenic than our normal trip straight down 75.

You'll have to pardon the bug guts on our windshield! We couldn't keep up with keeping the windshield clean!

We went through several tunnels.

The reason they are called the Great Smoky Mountains:
20220612_065805.jpg

We saw quite a few hot air balloons at one point.
20220612_072409.jpg

We eventually hit 26 and then 95. I wouldn't say the traffic was necessarily any better than 75, but Brian was happy to not have to drive through Atlanta and it was much more scenic!

We finally saw this at about 1:30pm:
20220612_132053.jpg

We had stopped shortly before that, so no one wanted to stop at the Welcome Center for me!
We finally were able to experience Buc-ee's for ourselves! It was quite an experience and almost overwhelming!
20220612_142058.jpg

We pulled into our hotel in Port Canaveral about 4:30pm.
20220612_163111.jpg

We stayed in the Home2Suites side. It was odd to have 2 different hotels under the same roof since they shared the pool and had the same breakfast offerings.
We unloaded the car and debated what we would have for dinner. Some of us wanted pizza and some wanted seafood. The pizza people won out since there was a pizza place right across the street.

We should have had seafood!!

The next thing we saw was very sobering for me. It was a piece of the Challenger shuttle. I very clearly remember being in 6th grade and watching the shuttle launch with my classmates during math class. We were sitting on the floor gathered around the rolling cart that contained the TV and VCR that we shared with the class next door. It was devastating to watch the explosion happen, and it all came back as we stood there reading about the astronauts and seeing this piece of the shuttle.

Then we looked at the last few buildings and the outside area.

Here was the fountain we all were tempted to splash around in! Logan actually did it, but the rest of us refrained.

And a few last pics on the way out.

We left about 3:30 which is about how long I figured we would be there. We headed back to the hotel to relax and decide what to do for dinner.

We googled seafood places near us and found Fishlips which ended up being one of the best meals of the entire trip! Everyone agreed that if we had found it the night before, we would have eaten there both nights!

We saw some dolphins after dinner which was pretty cool. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any pictures.
We ordered shrimp nachos to share
20220613_173546.jpg

I ordered fish and chips
20220613_173544.jpg

Brian ordered cajun mahi-mahi
20220613_173601.jpg

Owen ordered crab cakes that I thought I took a pic of, but apparently not! Lily had mac and cheese and Logan had boneless wings. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals!

I've been to Kennedy Space Center several times and learn something new every visit! Such an incredible learning experience for any age. My mom and I were there and got to see a night launch from Kennedy Point Park which is an experience I'll never forget. There were lots of other people there and it was such a communal experience when it took off and you felt the ground trembling, and the heat was sooo hot, and the light so bright, and the sounds so loud!! Amazing.

I don't think about it often, but it's amazing how all of the details came back so vividly as soon as I saw the memorial. I almost started crying right there.
Love the Space Center photos. We visited the NASA Space Center in Houston a few months ago and we loved it. It was amazing to see.
Thanks! Logan would love to go to Houston to see that!

It would be very cool to see an actual launch! Brian and Logan were really excited that we got to see the actual rocket on the launch pad since that is not an everyday occurrence.
I am a little bit late but I am here following along!
Welcome!

Today was our Kennedy Space Center day. Logan was particularly excited for this! In fact, he declared that he may change his major after we spent the day there! Last summer, he took a seminar during his Honors Program orientation at school and said if the engineering thing didn't work out, he would consider changing his major to astrophysics. Well, he is now considering switching from computer science and engineering to aeronautical engineering or astrophysics!

We spent some time in the Apollo/Saturn V Center and saw the rocket that was scheduled to launch that Friday.

That is Artemis! ❤️ You saw the vehicle that will take Americans back to the moon (knock on wood, fingers crossed, saying my prayers etc. etc.) It was rolled out for the wet dress rehearsal.

That's exciting about the switching majors - except he really can't go wrong with any of those options - current and potential. :)

Looks like y'all had a great day at the Cape. I love that photo of all 3 of them in the 'Apollo' capsule. Those are the sweetest - so perfect when you have 3!

Thanks! I couldn't remember what they had said was on the launch pad and Logan wasn't around to ask when I was typing it up. It was a great day! A little hot, but at least it wasn't too crowded and we were easily able to see everything we wanted to.

Today was the day! We were taking our Covid tests to determine if we could board The Dream or not! We chose to do ours at Walgreen's. I was able to book them online 1 week ahead of time. I had to book each of us a 15 minute slot. I was really hoping it wouldn't take the full 75 minutes. Luckily, it did not!! We pulled into the drive through at about 9:20am and were pulling out of the parking lot before 9:30! Then we had to wait for the results to be emailed to us. I couldn't help but check my phone every 5 minutes!!

A few pics on our way out of Port Canaveral:

20220614_094713.jpg

About 40 minutes later, the test results came trickling in. Brian's and Logan's came first, then 15 minutes later mine and Owen's came in, then 15 minutes after that Lily's came in. I was most worried about Logan's and Lily's because he had just been in Iowa participating in a triathlon and Lily had been at work a lot the previous week. They were all negative!! Such a relief! I felt like I could finally really start enjoying the trip!

We arrived at our hotel about 3 1/2 hours after leaving Port Canaveral. There was no Buc-ee's on the way, but we did stop at a Wawa's to grab a snack and get gas.

Luckily, they had our room ready for us early! The view from our room:

That is the port right across the street!

We walked over to the Bayside Market to find something to eat.
20220614_140154.jpg

Brian saw this and decided that was where we would eat!
20220614_140827.jpg

I ordered the mahi-mahi dish
20220614_144019.jpg

Owen ordered the surf and turf with ribs and shrimp
20220614_144022.jpg

I don't have pictures of the other meals, but Logan and Lily ordered fish and chips and Brian had a shrimp sampler of some sort. All of the meals were good, but didn't even come close to the meals from Fishlips!!

We saw a train go by that was heading out to the port.

We stopped into the team store and Brian got some merchandise. Then we retrieved the car and headed over to Miami Beach for some shopping.

We went to Lincoln Mall which is an outdoor shopping area.

Owen liked the sculptures in the Nike store.

I was a little light on the pictures that day! Oops, I promise I did better the rest of the days!

We stopped at Target to get some breakfast foods for the next 2 days and returned to the hotel for a relaxing evening.

We had a quick breakfast in the room this morning. This was the view from our room:

We left for the hour trip to get to Zoo Miami. It was only about 20 miles away, but it was city driving the whole way. We thought it was fun that we were on the S Dixie Hwy, as it also runs right through Dayton.
20220615_093703.jpg

We passed through the University of Miami on the way which was exciting for Brian. We eventually made it to the zoo.

Then we waited in line forever behind one family that took soooo long at the window, but we got 4 of our 5 tickets half price using our Cincinnati Zoo annual pass.

Let me just start by saying I hate that places no longer have paper maps. I hate being on my phone all of the time trying to navigate a place I am totally unfamiliar with!! Ok, done complaining! We basically just wandered the paths to see what we would find.
