The Future Of Pirates Of The Caribbean?

There are so many loose ends left unanswered in this franchise, it's an embarrassment for storytelling.

-Angelica was left stranded on some island at the end of On Stranger Tides, ticked at Sparrow, and a voodoo doll in her possession which can be used to manipulate him. No explanation to where she goes from there.

-In that same movie, Serena (the mermaid) drags a wounded Philip (the priest who is in love with her) underwater claiming she could save him from dying. So... what was that all about? Did she lie and actually eat him like her sisters consumed sailors? Does she love him in return, and save him somehow? No answers there. Where did they go?

-Davy Jones' return as seen at the very end / end credits scene of Dead Men Tell No Tales. Like you mentioned, plot point totally left hanging open. Is he alive again? Was that just a dream? What did that all mean?

There needs to be some closure to these significant story lines left hanging open before a complete reboot.
I agree there's a lot they have to address. I hope they don't just discard all of those plots.

POTC without Depp is not POTC. So going forward without him I will not be watching that. I do however like the idea of Redd being a central character and Christine Hendricks would be great for that.
I agree they should not do the movies without Depp. If the movie is a passing of the torch movie from Jack Sparrow to Redd that's fine but Johnny Depp has to be involved.

Its interesting how the news of soft reboot idea is coming just days after the female lead reboot leaked. I wouldn't be shocked if Disney saw the backlash to the idea of a POTC movie without Depp and are trying to rectify it while including as little Depp possible. This soft reboot idea is their compromise. Maybe he could have similar screen time to Will Turner in Dead men tell no tales?

Without Depp, this bombs and bombs badly.

Remember Cutthroat Island?!

Hopefully Disney has the sense to bring him back, even if it is a smaller but still significant role.

A billing of "And Johnny Depp" would work fine.

PS. I would love to see Barbossa's ghost haunting Sparrow to some extent as a cameo.

Why can't they do a female lead film and a direct sequel? And a TV series?

I really enjoyed the fifth film, after not enjoying the fourth. So I hope we get a sequel to wrap that up.

I also think the film could work without Depp or in a smaller role.

To me, he was never the main character, you can't connect to Jack as a character. You can't get invested in his story, but you can enjoy him. The original trilogy is Will and Elizabeth's story. That is what drives the films, that is what you've invested and connected to. Jack and his story is the crazy world they have found themselves in. They are how the audience connects to the films.

When the fourth film lost them, they weren't replaced and that's why the film didn't work. It was just Jack going on an adventure for no reason, some stuff happens and then he goes on his way again.

The fifth film corrected this issue by having new and returning characters. A story for the audience to connect to. This central aspect could surely exist on its own without Sparrow. As any film works without Jack Sparrow. As plenty of scenes and storylines in the originals worked without Sparrow in them. Might not quite be the same, he might be missed but I don't see why you couldn't tell a good story. You have large than life characters like Davey Jones. You can come up with more if needed.

I can see a lot of what you're saying.

Though there is a strong underlying character arch going on with Jack, as he battles internally his selfish ambitions as a pirate only after fortune and freedom...to becoming a heroic figure who puts others before himself. It's a back and forth conflict for him throughout all the films, leading him gradually closer to selfless Jack rather than selfish Jack... all while connecting heavily to the other characters.

I was really hoping for the one with Mazon/Elliot/Gillan tbh. Since it seemed the most likely one Depp would at least cameo in.

I don't think this film precludes that one being made.

I just want them to do a sequel to the last one. I'd even take a Disney + series to finish that.

This is a plus for the Pirates films as Margot Robbie is in my opinion a fantastic actress. We shall see what type of script they can put together for her and the other cast.

I don't particularly care for Margot Robbie, and after the boring whimper that was DMTNT, the only way I would be willing to sit through a PotC movie with her as the lead is if they bring back Penelope Cruz as a major antagonist, as set up by the stinger scene in OST.
