The end may be near for fireworks at Disney

Just read that Disney will be using the intel shooting star drones over Disney Springs this winter to put on a light show two times a night. It is probably only a matter of time until fireworks will be replaced by these silly drones which would likely save them thousands of dollars each night as they are reusable and only require one person to operate the entire fleet.

It's been talked about elsewhere on the forums. Usually by the same... member. It won't happen.

The next IllumiNations will probably use them as a supplement.

Ahahahahahaha. As others have said not going to happen. While cool, drones don't have the same visual and emotional impact as fireworks. You'll likely see Drones and Fireworks working in tandem.

We occasionally hear about fireworks ash floating down into someones eye... wait until a drone malfunctions and crashes down to earth.

Current FAA regulations give drones a good size buffer between flying and spectators. While not impossible it would be a large malfunction to fly off course and crash into spectators.

I wish there was an unlike button.

Drones don't go bang, pop, crackle. They don't have that lovely sulfur smell.

At this rate, why don't they just tear down the parks, sit you in an easy chair in a warehouse, give you a set of VR glasses and then tell you to have a magical day. Going to go sulk now.

I would be skeptical of too many drones in the wrong place. We had one crash at DD's soccer practice. Too many things can go wrong and liability can be large.

Sure, drones will be the main focus of a show...then one malfunctions and crashes into a crowd injuring dozens. Poof...drone show gone.
It might cause a lump on the head, but the shooting star drones have the blades enclosed by a cage to make sure no one gets sliced up... Which should limit the liability issues a bit.

All that has happened is 1) Disney has introduced something new that can be seen without paying admission and hasn't taken anything away and 2) somebody with an account on this site has speculated with no information that this might lead to replacing fireworks with drones down the road.

The first should be a reason to be overjoyed. New show, new technology, nothing lost, and available at no charge! What more could we want? Hip Hip, Hurray!

The second is mere speculation, and has been denied by none other than @marni1971.

So in light of this, the choice to be despondent seems to be the ultimate in doom and gloom -- the opposite of rose-colored glasses.

Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case I apologize for not catching it.

Yeah...
I'm very excited about the drone shows, because it's a cool new thing for Disney to show us as only Disney does.
But will they replace fireworks?
Never.
The visceral effect of fireworks cannot be replaced by a drone show.
