The Dream is Mean

I am totally obsessed with watching these on youtube. I am hoping when we go on our three night another ship passes so we can give it all we got. I agree it’s not fair the poor baby Magic doesn’t have the horns. Maybe in her refurbishment she’ll get some?

We were on a cruise in December where we were next to the Fantasy in 2 different ports. When we left the second port we shared with her, she gave us a "When You Wish Upon A Star" send off, which drove my fiancee into a tizzy. When we got home, she looked for a video so she could hear the horn again and stumbled across all the ones on youtube. Needless to say, we are now booked on our first Disney cruise (even if it is just a short 3-nighter). Had the Fantasy not done that, we probably wouldn't have considered looking into a Disney cruise anytime soon.

That's an awesome story! Can't wait to hear what you think as compared to other lines. ;)

The first port we shared with her, we were right next to her. We spent most of the time in port (which wasn't too long, but that is a different gripe towards a different company) pacing forward and aft looking over the ship before pulling up a chair and watching "Dumbo" on her huge screen (the ship we were on does not have a MUTS screen)... the looks I got singing "Elephants on Parade" acapella was pretty priceless.

The biggest issue we had before booking was justifying the cost since a 3-night DCL cruise costs about the same as some 7 or 10 day cruises (depending on stateroom cat of course). But between the money I'd be saving by there not being a casino and the fact that this is probably our last trip for a while, we figured why not? Unfortunately, there is just too much time and too much to do before we set sail.

are these horns pre programmed? Or is that the captain doing that>

Yes they are programmed.

The classic ships have a standard horn and the opening to When You Wish Upon A Star available.

The new ships have a number of pre-programmed songs (Its a small world, a pirates life, etc) in addition to the standard horn and when you wish upon a start.

To me, at least, it also sounds as if the new ships have multi tonal horns. They seem to be able to play chords as well as single notes. But maybe thats just my ears.

By "multitonal", do you mean one horn can play more than one note? Wouldn't chords just require playing two horns at the same time?

Not sure. It may mean more than one horn. It may also mean that a given horn is set to play its programmed note, and a note one octave above it. I forget the correct term for it, but I it makes me think of the old Commodore 64 computer (dating myself and establishing nerd cred at the same time). The big thing about the C64 was its sound chip, and that you could play multiple notes at once. I remember how it would sound with just a single tune of notes, and then how it would sound when you layered a second voice over it. The new horns remind me of how it sounded with a second voice.

Our previous cruises only included a dressy night (4 night). Our upcoming (40 days away :)) cruise includes a formal night. The girls and I have been prepping. We have beautiful dresses and are really excited. Now, hubby is a firefighter and asked if it would be appropriate for him to wear his dress uniform for formal night? Having never been to a formal evening, we wondered if others have done this? So.... I'm calling on the input of veteran Disney cruisers out there. Have you seen this for formal nights?

I actually haven't ever seen that particular dueling horns video. That was so fun, thanks for sharing it. When we sailed The Dream last September, we didn't pass any other Disney ships, but she did play "When You Wish Upon A Star" a couple of times during our voyage and I have to say, that simple little thing made me so stinking happy. It really is the little things that make all the difference.

There is another thread going on right now in these Cruise forums about formal night. In fact people are asking about wearing military dress uniforms. I would say yes to the firefighter uniform.

If you look at the Magic/Wonder's front stack, you can see all 7 horns used to play When You Wish Upon a Star. You can also tell by "reading" them left to ride that their different sizes let them play the song in order.

I didn't personally check on the Dream but I would imagine it has a similar setup, perhaps with 12 (or more) horns to play a full chromatic scale (seeing as Upon a Star usually has some funky chromatic notes involved). If that's the case, it makes me wonder if someone could just plug a keyboard into a control panel somewhere and have at it.
