The Disney Inn was purchased by the Department of Defense and now bears the name Shades of Green. It is used as a vacation facility for members of the US Military who, thereby, get reduced rates to stay on Disney property. I believe it is no longer open to the general public. It has been undergoing a major rehabilitation for the past year or so, and will reopen sometime next year, I believe.

We have stayed there a few times as Shades of Green. Excellent hotel. Incredible value. You do have to be accompanied by a retired or active duty militairy member, but one military person can sponsor three rooms. That way we have been able to take friends to stay with us.
It is scheduled to reopen the beginning of March.

It was our favorite place to stay. The rooms were HUGE; much larger than most of the deluxes. There were 2 queens, plus a daybed separated by a partition. Then there was an area near the BR that was more than large enough for a porta-crib.

There were two pools, and I think one had a slide. The "quiet" pool had a fountain/waterfall in the center. The restaurant catered to breakfast and lunch, but we usually planned to eat at the parks or restaurants at other resorts, so it didn't bother us.

I remember some topiary (7 dwarves?) as you entered, and tons of rabbits. There was/is also a golf course there; I never played it, but did use the driving range.

We were disappointed when it was turned into Shades of Green AFTER my husband left the military.

I thought the Disney Golf Resort became Shades of Green. Was there a change in-between?

Just a small correction. SOG was not bought but leased by Disney to ARMYMWR (Morale Recreation and Welfare) and is operated with non-appropriated funds. That means no tax dollars go to support it. There are 4 such facilities. One in Korea, one in Hawaii and one in Germany. They make it possible for our military personnel to enjoy the same lifestyle as the people they defend. Rates are based on rank, so junior enlisted personnel pay about $60 a night to stay at SOG, rates go up to $105 currently.

You're right The Mom the rooms are huge. Bigger then those at the Grand Floridian. Two queen beds a pull out single and still enough room for a crib. We have fit six in there very comfortably.
