The Crane is Gone!

I dont understand though, how are they going to move the star supports from the inside. Isnt there like 3 feet between the ending inside of the sphere and the outside. It seems like it would be easier just to hank em off from the top, but I dont know. Its just good to know they are coming down too.

They seem to be affixed to the supports that hold the Alucobond panels. Thus, you need to be inside the Alucobond panels to disconnect the star supports. They may be small enough that they could be then brought inside, or else a guy on the outside rappelling will grab it as the guy inside disconnects it.

Literally just landed from my delayed flight from Orlando and got home. After seeing SSE in person today, I was happy as possible. You cant even see the support bars for the crane from a long distance, and have to look closly from American Adventure to see it.:sohappy:

I stand corrected. I got my dates the wrong way round. Ladder moved from M:S to Fantasyland. However, I did find this from April 1971:

Though technically, this could be the first generation of Ladder working on Walt Disney World. How bored are we now that the wand threads have finished??

No... I thought it (or perhaps he/she) was seen under the exterior canopy behind the wall. I can`t believe I`m going to go searching for a photo of a stepladder...

Classic :ROFLOL: .... Ladder is looking good for his old age... or maybe thats just great-great grandladder.

By the way I think we all agree that SSE could also use a good cleaning now, any idea how that would be done? Another crane or ladder?? I'm being serious now. :lookaroun

Wow, I didn't know my joking statement about the "big ball" would cause a little uproar. Like jmvd20 said, not everyone at WDW is a Disney freak like all of us here. I hear people mess up the names of rides all the time, and all I do is giggle and move on...

It's OK, I didn't mean to give you a hard time. I just consider myself a Disney purist & my judgement becomes clouded when someone fails to refer to a part of Disney in MY "Percieved to be Proper Term". :zipit:

After an hour of research, I found the 1971 photo is a rare pic of Great Ladderus Woodus - a distant relation of the large aluminium (aluimius jokus) family that now resides in WDW. The ladder with Walt was actually from a previous generation; known as onelegedlad (pronounced one legged - lad(der)) from which the aluminius jokus generation are direct descendents - they became bi-peds over time due to one too many conflicts with gravity. Rumour has it a whole family of onelegedlad's were co stars in The Astuter Computer Revue, leaning against the rear wall of Computer Central, but I can`t verify this due to no video being available of the show.

Please note, Martin hasn`t lost the plot. There again, some might say he never had it to begin with.

Well, I`m mad enough to fly 4000 miles to attend a theme park ceremony so I guess so :D

Back to the topic (awwww) - I have no idea how SSE would be cleaned. I don`t know if it has been in the past. Alculobond should self clean, assuming a) the relevent layer is still intact and b) the stars didn`t shelter the dirty tiles from the weather too much. At a guess, I`d say cherry-pick from the ground as high as possible, and abseil from the roof hatch around the top section. Though whether it would just be a strong power wash, or new outer pannels would need to be attached I don`t know. As you`ve seen in some of my pics, each 4-section Geodisic tile was raised and attached complete, including the surface finish. I don`t know if needed they could be repaired/replaced in situ.

I'm at the airport now (MCO) and was at the parks the last few days. The crane was not gone, it was just folded in half. Our first days at the park, I noticed that even the stars were down which was on Tuesday. It was a great opening to the trip.

I was at Epcot yesterday, the crane that has done the major work is now removed. Maybe they brought in a second smaller crane do do the remaining work on the ground, but the tall yellow and black "Sims Crane" has been removed.

I noticed that the rods that the stars were attached to are still there. Are they being removed? Or are the being kept as lightning rods (are the any on SSE to begin with?). I would think they would still need a large crane to take those down if they did. that smaller one wouldn't do it.

Someone posted earlier in this thread (at least I believe that it was this thread) that they are somehow going to be removed from the inside of SSE. They might just be removed when they clean SSE if they actually decide to do so. The sphere is noticably dirty and they will probably have them removed when they clean it. This is a more delicate process for removal than the wand or stars because the rods are attatched to the sphere and they will need to be carefully removed so no damage is done to SSE.

They use some sort of "big ball cleaner" to wash SSE. Early into the whole Siemens change over I walked past SSE on the Guest Relations side and the trees, the lower side walls of the postshow, and parts of the sidewalk/SSE queue were covered in a sort of foamy wetness.

Sort of like the slick you see after someone washes their car.

It had been after a particularly dirty period, but wasn't a true full wash, or atleast there was still some visible grime up there, but not nearly as bad.

Here is a quick picture from my upcoming photo-TR of my trip!

Enjoy!

PS --> The parks just didn't feel the same without Spaceship Earth (or Haunted Mansion)!!!! I guess it sounds spoiled of me to say, but it felt like there was so much less to do without those two rides.
