We are lucky today in that we have central heat in our homes, but it makes you wonder how people during the 1800’s used to manage that. Thinking “Little House on the Prairie” times. Those were some really tough people. No wonder they never smiled in pictures.Also makes you wonder why they just didn’t head south for a more comfortable climate.
They had fireplaces inside and kept warm. I'm thinking they didn't move, because maybe the land was at a better price for them where they were, or the (non-winter months) climate may have been good for specific crops. Some may not have hated the winter, while some others that did, might not have had the money to move.

Stopped into this local sub shop (that's our regional term for hoagies), and they had all kinds of different things on their menu. I love small, local places run by multi-generational families. They're all either working behind the counter, or in the kitchen -- and all yelling at each other in a different language.
