Wow. Talk about an historic location. My schools were all in suburban settings--no outhouses! ;)
The older campus of my school has an area with a sign that says "fallout shelter." Very rural area, church next door. A lot of private schools back that way.

The benefit is that it feels extremely safe. So does the newer campus, but that campus feels especially safe.

Second college..I double check that my car doors are locked and that nothing is visible. And I don't leave my backpack unattended unless someone can watch it. Here, if I'm just going to the ladies room, I leave it in a classroom. Or I'll take the electronics and leave the rest on a chair. I pretty much know nothing's going to happen. That's the campus culture here.

I find regional words for things fascinating. I refuse to call that bit of grass between roads a median. I always call it the neutral ground. It's a New Orleans thing.

Never heard of that one before; it's always been referred to (up here) as the median strip.

Here's another one for you: most of the country calls the little bits of chocolate sprinkled on ice cream cones, "sprinkles", yet in New England, we've always called them "Jimmies". Haven't a clue why we call them that. o_O

Can you borrow the Millennium Falcon Starwarsgirl? :hilarious:
Oh how I wish.

My dad prefers me to drive the Lacrosse just because it's similar to my Aurora. Enclave...I've never driven that thing, and it's huge. They want me to have some practice with Mom in the passenger seat first.

The plan is to go home, take a long, soothing bath, watch a movie, and go to bed. Because yes, I am still stuck at school. Grabbing food here.

I hope everything turns out o.k. with the car and all. Sorry you're experiencing car issues.

The only problem I have with a lot of food in New Orleans is that it's too spicy. My family thinks I'm crazy because they all love spicy food.

Even though we've moved our local television station affiliates are still New Orleans and I find the amount of crime reported on the news every night unreal. That said, I do feel safe just visiting New Orleans but I wouldn't want to live there again.

I agree. We had an early morning flight and were picked up at our hotel in the Garden District by the service pre-dawn and there were multiple stops. Some of the neighborhoods we went through were far from great. And I had my at the time blonde 98# DD with me and I was not comfortable with some of the looks she was getting from the gentleman we picked up in the neighborhoods. We don't have similar areas in the county I live in but have seen plenty similar for decades in Chicago. We avoid them whenever we head to the city and always take the train.
Our next trip to NOLA I just hired a towncar, solved that issue.

As for the food, I didn't like it or any Mexican food until I hit about 40. I have a DD your age and she feels the same way about the spicy food as you do but she didn't grow up with it either.

The interesting thing about adding spices, is that they don't have to be hot to be flavorful. I don't like hot things either, but I really enjoy Mexican food--as long as it's toned down in the heat department. :hungry:

Yeah I hope I didn't get too political but I just feel a responsibility to express that it isn't the same for everyone. It definitely isn't fair for some and I don't want to alienate anyone here.
You haven't! Don't worry about it at all. I feel that we are having a nice conversation about this and our differing opinions. Yours is just as good as anyone's. Your observations are completely relevant, and if it weren't for anti-everything groups in existence today paranoia would not be nearly as high as it has been lately. It just proves that all of us are human and prone to making a lot of mistakes in judgment.

The things you were talking about reminded me of the time in Vietnam and I was riding in the back of a pickup truck in the middle of Saigon. We were stopped at an intersection and I looked up at the vehicle stopped next to us and there was a kid, no more then 12 years old pointing a pistol at us. (there were three of us in the back) We all had fire arms and we took them out and pointed them at the kid. We were close enough that we knew it was real, besides kids didn't play with toy guns in Vietnam unless they had a death wish. He changed his mind and pulled the gun back in the window. I never trusted a Vietnam kid again. Was that wrong? Yup, but, it is human nature to be afraid of the unknown and lump bad experiences into a stereotypical framework.

I watch a lot of British tv and somehow I've started picking up British expressions without even realizing it. I told my Mom the milk had gone off and she had no idea what I was talking about.

Brit TV is so much more interesting than American TV. Americans are more prudish. And it stinks when a show you like gets cancelled.

I agree. I watch too much British TV. I got hooked on EastEners a few years back so that's four episodes a week right there. I also like the classic British shows. The Vicar of Dibley is one of my favorites.

I don't know why we don't get panel shows over here. QI, Have I Got News For You, and Mock the Week are great.
