I want to pet the belly!

It's always a trap, but still! 😂
E got to pet a cat last night on her way home. One of her best friend's birthday is today and she had her party last night. They only live a block away from us, so she just walks. (The friend and her boyfriend DID insist on walking her home to make sure she was safe. There was a 17 year old girl who was murdered on her way home from a party a couple of weeks ago...not in our town, but the whole nation is really shaken up by it. She had called 112, the Dutch version of 911, and told them someone was following her. She was on her bike, and some cyclists or walkers found her body the next morning. There have been "take back the night" protests for the last couple of weeks, and there were several young women who were assaulted or harassed during protests. So it's been really big news and women are being even more cautious, because there is a group of men who are insulted by women being afraid of them, and they are saying women are equating them to criminals, and they have decided to prove they are not by groping teens and young women as they pass by. ) So it was almost 1am, and they were walking the block back to our house and apparently a cat walked straight up to them and rolled over on its back and let them pet her/him, and then tried to follow E home. She was very happy to have pet a cat.

The like is for the cat, not the other part.

I have cats and yet I am always happy to pet a cat. Hence why there are photos of cats from Hawaii on my phone...

Happy for E but the rest not so much. WHAT is going on in this world.

Good job! So what does that mean, for those of us who are unfamiliar with home school protocol? Is it the equivalent of moving up a grade? Or is it like a graduation? What do you do next?

I'm sure it's not any where near the same, but my son tested out of a math class at college on Wednesday. I guess they have issues every year with students really struggling with the math in his major (Embedded Systems Engineering) and so they have to take this test in the first week to determine if they need a sort of refresher course for math. He said a majority of students failed it, but he got a 9.6 (out of 10), so he doesn't have to take the refresher course. But I guess it's a class at what I think would be equivalent to a junior high math class, maybe? And he's had like Trigonometry and such, while most of the students coming in have not had nearly the math background that he does. They are coming from a lower level of school than he did with much easier math. He said most of the stuff was stuff he did in elementary school or the first couple of years of high school. So it's not at all surprising that he passed with flying colors, but still...it's a class he doesn't have to take now. He's only upset that he can't test out of Math 1 because he says it's not much harder and he's going to be really bored.

Well we have no pets or overlords, but we do love to see people walking dogs, or see cats roaming the neighborhoods. It's still rather rare that we actually get to pet them. There are two cats in the neighborhood that are pretty friendly. The gray one with the green collar will come into our yard and hang out sometimes, and he'll let you pet him. Then there's an orange and white cat named Storm that will SOMETIMES approach and let you pet her, but that's pretty much it. And we don't usually bother people out walking their dogs to ask to pet them. Only if the dog approaches us. Like there's a dog on our regular walking route named Beau, who, if he is outside and unleashed, he will come running up barking for all he's worth, and then will just rub against you and sniff. If he's unleashed, one of the family will be close behind trying to call him off (and not succeeding) and explaining he won't hurt you. He's just a big floofy teddy bear. It's a good day if he's out loose when we're walking. But usually it's people walking their dogs for exercise, not who live there, and they are on a mission, so we don't like to bother them unless the dogs come up and are obviously wanting lovies. Those are always fun. But we never turn down an opportunity to pet them if it presents itself.

Yeah, the other part is really sad. They do have the suspect in custody, and discovered there is a connection between him and two other SAs in the last month or so, but neither of those women were killed. And I think they said there was no evidence that the girl had actually been SAed, so I'm wondering if her being on the phone with emergency services didn't play into that....that he pulled her off her bike intending to assualt her, but then he got spooked and murdered her instead. But he was a refugee and they couldn't tell where he was from for a while. I think they finally tracked him down to possibly being from Nigeria, but it's unsure. And of course, that led a bunch of Dutch dudes to saying "See? Women are calling all men predators, when really it's only these immigrants!" and so then to prove that it's just the immigrants, they go around assaulting women to punish them for calling men unsafe. It's ridiculous and scary, especially with school having just started up and there are thousands of young women who have to ride bikes to school every day. E has to bike to the train station, then take 2 different trains and a bus to get to campus. In the winter, both ways will be dark. Just this week, 3 out of 5 days, she had to leave at 6am to get to school on time, so she was biking in the dark, to the train station, which is where a lot of....rough individuals hang out, getting high, etc. I worry about something happening. This poor girl, when the news broke that her body was found, a bunch of people were blaming HER, like "Well why was she out alone in the dark?" "She shouldn't have been out that late!" "Why wasn't she at home? Why weren't her parents with her?" And of course, here, the average student only does the lowest level of school, which is 4 years, and they are already in junior college or trade school at 16. She was probably a college student who has to bike home in the dark sometimes. There's no way to avoid that here! A lot of kids don't even go to high school in the town they live in. By the time they are 12, they are having to bike miles to get to school in a bigger town. My kids were SUPER lucky that we live in a large town that had several schools of each level they could choose from, so they could go to school here in town. And A's school was mostly kids who are bused in from other towns too far away to bike or unable to ride a bike. But several of E's friends had to bike more than an hour just to get to high school...from 12 years old on. What are people thinking saying girls shouldn't be biking in the dark? What....girls just shouldn't go to school or work?

We had something similar happen near us a few years ago to a woman who was walking on a trail in broad daylight. And it was a white dude who did it.

Maybe men could just...not?

Edit: Actually, he was an immigrant. But I still don't recall that being the attitude just because we have so many immigrants, more like "this is why we chose the bear."
