We have red light cameras down here. If you go through a red light, odds are you'll get a ticket in the mail.

The only issue is that people tailgate, so because people are afraid of the cameras, they end up getting rear-ended a lot because they step on the brakes and get rear-ended. Kind of ironic. They're meant to prevent accidents, but actually cause them.

We have the red light cameras down here, as well, but, not at every intersection. Just certain ones.

So would you suggest the curriculum needs to be revised to include more about defensive driving or should it happen with the driving time? I'm interested in what you think about this subject. I would like to help my kids learn to be better defensive drivers. My daughter is only 20 so she is still a young driver.
I think we all could benefit from any input you have to give.

I know you didn't ask for any input from me, but, if it's OK (apologies in advance, if not... :cautious: ;)) I'd like to throw one more from my pop out there, that is pretty much the bottom line to all his other words of advice/quips, when it comes to driving...

They used to have that here in Cary, NC as well, but, then for some reason took them out. They still have them on some of the toll roads though. They amaze me! Drive down the road at 70 miles per hour and it takes a picture of the rear of your car and in a couple of weeks you get an itemized bill from the DMV telling you how much you owe. Comes complete with a picture of your car, in travel, and a list of when you were there. So far, it has been completely accurate. There must be a way around that though like having a lot of mud on the plate obscuring the number. The funniest part of the toll method is that I only use that road maybe twice a year, at best, one way! The toll is 50 cents. By the time they process, copy pictures, pay for invoice prep., envelope and postage, they probably lose $2.00 per invoice. Never underestimate the ability for Government to work at a very high non-profit level.

That, my friend, is the fundamental purpose of defensive driving. Never underestimate the stupidity of the normal driver.

One other thing that people either aren't aware of or don't think about is that the number of accidents you are involved with can and will affect how much it costs you for insurance even if none of them are your fault. The theory being that if you find yourself in the middle of an accident often enough, that tells them that you are not driving defensively and therefore are continuously putting yourself in risk while on the highway. So "not my fault" may save you from a traffic fine, but, you can end up paying a lot of money for not being defensive.

Yep, we've had toll roads here in Central Texas for about a decade now. Many transplants from other parts of the country warned us about them. I have yet to ever drive on one, and hopefully, will never have to.
And, things haven't exactly been so accurate with the whole thing, down here anyway...

We have one major toll road here - Hwy 407.
I drive it often, because time is money, it offers a more direct route to work, there is less wear and tear on the car because it's not QEW-type stop and go/stop and go, it's significantly less congested, and it's meticulously maintained.

But dangit, it's big bucks! Some months, Hubby's useage and mine ads up to $500 or more!
Luckily, it's a line item on our tax returns.

Thank you for the info. When my daughter gets home I'm going to have her read your post to see how much is familiar to her. I can tell you I'm very guilty of stopping too close to cars at stop lights. I like the part of getting in your left lane to not take chances with merging traffic. Thanks again.

The moving to left to help folks merge is somethin' I always do, if I can.
To me it's also a courtesy thing. Plus, I don't know if Mario Andretti/Danica Patrick is behind the wheel, or some nervous wreck.
