What a contrast from that to my first major childhood accident.

I was riding my bike along with a friend. My father ran a trucking company with a drive way all the way around the main barn (truck garage). The back part was gravel. My friend and I decided it would be fun to race. Something that my parents had specifically banned from my ever doing. Anyway, I was leading and went around a corner in the back and hit a good sized stone that grabbed the front wheel of my bike, flipping the front wheel into the ----I direction from where I was heading. The bike stopped instantly and I went over the top of the handle bars and landed on my forehead. I remember bouncing on my head three times and the next thing I remember is waking up with the bike in front of me and my head on the seat.

I remember coming to and being the most relaxed that I could ever remember being before (or since) and then I moved my arm. As soon as I did, the pain hit me. My legs were all skinned and bleeding, my elbows and hands were the same. I had this hug bruise on my stomach and my head hurt something awful. Dilemma, I couldn't tell my parents about it because I was forbidden to race my bike. At least now, I reasoned, I was still alive, but, if they found out, they would kill me.

It was the middle of summer and all of a sudden I was wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants and (thankfully I had hair back then so) I just combed my hair over the mess. After two days of stealth behavior, I noticed that the bruise had become a hard lump and I finally panicked and confessed. They took me to the ER and determined that the lump was a blood clot. I don't remember what they did about it, but, I'm still alive 60 years later so whatever it was, it was successful.

Moral of the story... be glad that he screamed. I said nothing, but, it could have been fatal. I was 10 at the time. Looking back, however, it would explain some of my current behavior.
Oh wow!!!! I would have killed you for not telling me!! ;)

I’m glad you were alright!!

I actually told my son a similar story last night, after applying for the Mother of the Year award by calling my kid a wimp. I too flipped over my handlebars.. I was 8 or 9, our street was on a hill, it did have sidewalks though, unlike my house now.
I was on one side of the street on a sidewalk, a friend on the other side on that sidewalk.. we were racing down the steep hill.
Well, I hit an uneven part of the pavement and went flying. I still have scars on my knees and hands from it, broke my nose, sprained my wrist, scrapes everywhere, also had a concussion. I can still remember it vividly.
I’ll try to find the photo and post it. I’m in the bathtub with my arms crossed showing all of the scrapes, my eyes are both black and blue, forehead cut, and just all around miserable looking.

I do make my son wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter at a park.. but I don’t make him at home, didn’t think he’d have an accident on a flat driveway.. especially one that was just repaved this past Fall.
Double sympathy likes. Glad you both survived.

No AC in The Netherlands?
Not in the houses, no. Or schools. Summers are usually pretty mild and we only get a couple of weeks worth of real summer weather. So most places don't bother with AC. My work is MISERABLE when we get the hot weather. Last year, they measured the upstairs at 109 degrees. We were basically told to drink plenty of water and not to walk as fast and make sure that we didn't stay upstairs as long. So we were supposed to kind of rotate who was walking up there. We got in trouble for propping open the doors because if there was a fire, it would spread more easily and insurance wouldn't pay for it. Yeah....because the chance of a fire is a whole lot greater than someone getting heat stroke and passing out. Heaven forbid they put our health ahead of the money. But they won't invest in the building. The elevators don't work well, so now we're not allowed to go in them....they are only for goods. The floor has like...potholes in it, which they have covered with packing tape to keep people from tripping. They did finally start using the heat in the winter in the last couple of years. When I first started, we walked around in our coats and scarves in the winter. But they don't want to invest in it, and the working condition laws are pretty vague. I thought for sure it was a violation in that heat, but it's not. It says they have to assess whether or not work really needs to be done there, and if not, then they can't make you. But if there's nothing they can do about it and the work HAS to get done, they have to offer frequent drinks and limit time spent in the hotter areas. That's it. A few years ago, we had a heatwave and most schools in the country went to what they call a tropics roster. They started a couple hours early, when it was still cooler out, and then they got out before the hottest part of the day. Our school was an exception....they didn't want to get up early, so they didn't do anything except allow the kids to have water breaks. DD's classroom faced the sun and it was 44.3 Celsius in there. One of the fathers was LIVID and brought the whole class popsicles. People don't think we need AC here, but it's getting a bit warmer every year. I was surprised they built DD's new school building without AC. I thought for sure the newer buildings would have AC. I thought wrong.

No such things as bike helmets back in the days when we built real men! ;):D I did make my daughters wear a helmet, but, secretly, in spite of what happened, I told myself repeatedly that if I had been forced to wear one of those weird tear shaped helmets, I would never have ridden a bike. :angelic: I suppose that does prevent any bicycle accident from happening.
I never wore a helmet as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. I was also lucky to have never had massive wipeouts. I confess that I was not much of a daredevil or a speed demon.

There was a serious accident by my house tonight. I was at work, but DH said suddenly it got REALLY noisy. Ambulances, firetrucks, trauma helicopter...the fireman had to extricate the woman from the car and I guess they took both people to Nijmegen to a bigger hospital. It was only the one car, thank goodness, but the street was closed down for a while and hubby said the helicopter went RIGHT over the house. It was only about 2 blocks away. I hope the people pull through!!

Cute
..............but seriously, MK is limited for table service dining. "Be Our Guest" is NEVER available. It doesn't matter if I jump on the booking as soon as I'm eligible....it's always full.
"Crystal Palace" would be fine but we've gone there at least twice. Tony's will be our first time. At least when I present the bookings to my wife she can't say: "Really...again?" //// Yup....she can't say THAT ;)
I actually like The Plaza. Price is reasonable also.

My wife would probably think most of Liberty Tree's food is bland. She comes from a culture that uses spices...chili sauce.....stuff with "zing" or some "kick" to it. When we ate at Colonial Williamsburg's nicest restaurant.....or Historic Alexandria VA....she enjoyed the historic "vibe".....ate her food....but later confessed that she felt it did not have "much taste". Italian food is well liked by Mrs. Steve :hungry::happy:

(I can hear people now...they are sayin' : "Ah....I see" :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::joyfull: )
I also second Skippers Cantina as well if your wife likes spices.

We ate there in 2016 and were very disappointed. It was FREEZING in there...people were talking about it in the bathroom, so I know it wasn't just me, and DH overheard someone complaining to a manager about it. We were shoved in a back corner where we could see the busing station where all the CMs were bringing the dirty dishes, and where there was an outlet so everyone and their dog kept coming over and we kept having to get up so people could get their phones or plug them in, and the service was slow because we were kind of hidden. If the food had been great, it would have been worth it, but it was just ok. If you go, I'd recommend asking for a table in the main dining area, or in any case, not near an outlet!!!
That was really rude of people to plug their phones in by another table. There were charging stations then. How inconsiderate to interrupt someone else’s dinner. That actually should not be permitted.

Sympathy like for your working conditions. Guess they don’t have someting like OSHA there?

It's ok. We are going to Disney for the rides. If great Italian food was our priority we would save our money and eat here in NJ.
In November we will take our daughter to see Liberty University in VA and then continue south to Pensacola Christian College. Since the second college is in Florida I suggested we do 3 theme parks at Disney. Why not? We are down there anyway :)
