Sorry that happened to you. Those numbers are sold on the black market, and sometimes they "sit" in a queue (sometimes for months), until the thieves start using them. When the individual card numbers get shut down by Visa or whatever, the thieves move on to the next group of stolen numbers on their list, and charge up more fraudulent charges. Vicious cycle. (Also a chip won't protect from "online" purchasing, which is easy to do when buying airline tickets, for example.)

Yep, unfortunately, that is exactly how it seems to work.
Also, one of the reasons we haven't done any online purchasing in quite a while.
I have always just felt very uneasy giving out all that info to a stranger over the interwebs.
Heck, I'm uneasy every time I swipe my card anywhere...!
Cash is KING.....!!!!!!! :joyfull: :hilarious: ;) :)

And that is the way that most situations work out. However, having dysfunctional, disabled and incompetent parenting is not anywhere near as uncommon as you think. .

I'll have to take your word for it as I don't have the data to say it is common or uncommon. Even with a unique Dad I lived a very normal childhood.
Thanks. I just REALLY hope I don't fall into that same trap. The ironic thing is that my mom complained about how my aunt tried to control her son's life and ignored him if he didn't do what she wanted. Like...her youngest son married the woman she chose for him...so he got a nice condo to live in. The oldest married the woman of his choice, who his mom never liked, and he got nothing. The younger son and his wife loved nature and hiking, etc. So they got jobs in Montana. (they are both teachers) They had the moving truck loaded in the driveway, ready to head to Montana and my aunt went and told him she didn't want him to go. So they unloaded the truck. She SHOWERED their kids with gifts and expensive things while her oldest son's kids were kind of left out for a while. And my mom was just so angry that my aunt couldn't let her son make his own decisions. She thought it was really funny that he did things just to bug his mom...like, he hated his hair long, but his mom kept nagging at him to cut it, so he grew it out. MY mom couldn't see that she was doing the exact same thing to me that my aunt did to her kids, and I never even did stuff just to bug her! I wish we had had more time to get back on track once I got with my husband, who she actually liked. I think in time we may have at least been able to talk to each other again like we used to. But she passed 9 months after I got married, so we didn't really have time to build that back. It was better than when I was with the guy she hated, but it wasn't back to the way we used to be. I was too hurt and I didn't trust her to let me live the way I wanted and she still tried to control everything. And I do worry...if she couldn't see that she was doing that to me, will I see it if I try to do that with my kids?

I'm not really concerned about you. You have a very good thought process and seem to be leveled headed and advocate well for your children and appreciate their good sense and recognise the wonderful attributes. You're a good Mom woman!

We've had it happen a couple times now. Always at a mall never online. Eddie Bauer just reported hack, store purchase but online was safe.
Ya never really know.

Noone Swirls better than Hurricane Gaston, even if there is no better hurricane than him!
anyway being serious. Its not like I can change things.
Good thing that if something BAD happens, im going to get insurance.

*edit*
Hurricane Gaston seems to be moving upwards (towards the bermudas) and is currently a Tropical Storm.

But there is another storm that is right on top of Haiti with a 50% chance of forming right now

I went back to look, not finding it...when do you leave on your cruise?

About 10 or so months ago, both DWifey and myself ended up with fraudulent charges on our cards about 2 weeks apart.
Fortunately, the bank contacted us ASAP, as these were completely unusual, and we never lost a penny.
DWifeys were from a baby store in WDC , and a few other places there. And mine were from a dollar store and a convenience store completely on the other side of Austin.
That was the first time it's ever happened to us.
Both cards have since been replaced by chipped cards and we haven't had a problem since. Fingers crossed... :cyclops:

Here not all the stores still accept chips. Some do, some not.

It was about 6 years ago for me. One of the card companies called me to check on a bunch of charges made in . . . SPAIN??!!!! :jawdrop: Needless to say, they shut that puppy down right away. I was not charged; they issued a new card, with new numbers to me. (I guess the card companies have some way of flagging accounts with unusual spending patterns. For example, I've had bosses over the years who charge up tons of expensive stuff every month, but that's normal for them. I charge very little, or even nothing on some months, so when a spending spree takes place, especially overseas, it sends up a red flag to the card company.)

I agree about cash. That's why I try to take out cash each week to cover everything (groceries, other, etc.), because once I spend it all and there's no more left in my wallet, that's a good sign for me to stop right there!! I know that if I used my credit cards more, I'd definitely spend more. Hate getting the credit card bills, too, so I limit their use.

About the future of cash though--some places are "trying" to limit or even eliminate cash transactions and only use credit or debit. This is infuriating to me (there's actually a law in MA that a merchant cannot deny a purchase in cash, but a few smaller merchants are trying to slip it in). Another thing that ticks me off is our toll bridges and roads out here. They've all switched to (or are in the process) of moving to transponder systems.

Now, they've had the transponder systems in place for some years, but the move is to eventually (this year) eliminate all cash booths. So in the case of the MA Pike, starting in October, if you don't have a transponder, the cameras will take a photo of your license plate and they send you a bill in the mail--and it will cost you a higher fare than if you had a transponder. (Luckily, we only use the Pike about once every 2 years, but the same technology is also being used on the major bridges and highways. :( )
