For those who don't know, Southwest started assigned seating... yesterday. For those who also don't know, they take up 70% of BWI. So your option when flying is...Southwest.

Anyway, you can tell who has never flown on an airline with assigned seats. I preboarded (peanut allergy) and I swear I've heard five people ask how they know where their seat is...or whether it's a window or aisle...as if it didn't tell you that when you booked/checked in.

Nice cardholder perk is I get free upgraded seating if it's available 48 hours before my flight. So I could get in the preferred section, 7 rows back. Sometimes you can get free extra legroom. Wasn't available without an upcharge. I did book for the preferred section on my way back (I paid the $12 or whatever it was). So I'll have to look 48 hours in advance and see if the upgrade to extra legroom is available.

Must be a nightmare for you if you can't get the extra legroom

For the last three days I spent in Charleston, SC and Myrtle Beach SC and even though there was no snow the cold, windy, air just cut through like a knife.
Ironically, when I was there in December, it got up to 80. Was in the 60s and 70s mostly.

I just landed in Orlando and it's going to be colder here than it was for that trip.

Streets are still not plowed here in places and it's Wednesday. I heard it's terrible in Providence.

I mean, I know we haven't had snow in a few years but we should know how to plow.
That's crazy. It's New England, for heaven's sake. Our guys up here (plus a bunch of private contractors) were all out there right from the get-go, and many put in very long hours. Streets are in good shape. Only issue now is the time it takes for them to remove high snowbanks. It's really hard with so much snow -- they run out of places to dump it.

I live in an over 55 apartment building. We got snow first and freezing rain last. I was able to leave on Monday morning because the surface was just crusty and walking was easy. I was gone for almost three days. It didn't have a big thaw during that time, but it did go above freezing. They did nothing with the parking lots and during that time the snow fell off the cars and left piles of snow melting during the day. I got back this afternoon and promptly had my feet come out from under me on a water covered ice area that wasn't cleaned up when they had the chance. Except for my pride I wasn't injured but I did angerly call and tell them that they needed to get this ice cleared post haste. A few minutes later they were out there trying to bust up the ice with a plastic snow shovel and a metal pipe. As you can imagine they weren't making much progress. I wasn't as concerned about me as I was about the older ladies here that might have some problems with bone breakage if they fell. They had two days to take care of that, but like most of the southern folk they wait until it gets warmer to let nature do the work. They are used to having snow and have it followed the next day warm enough to take care of most of it. It doesn't look like this cold spell isn't going away anytime soon.

Glad to hear that you weren't hurt when you fell on the ice.

40th anniversary… :(

Here's the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center (Concord, NH), named in their honor.
