@donaldtoo , heard on the news about some really bad rain storms in Austin yesterday. Hoping water drained off into the sewer drains, and not in home basements. How was your street?

Thank you for your concern Minnie, but, we’re fine…!!! :)
Yes, we got a buncha’ rain, but North Texas got it worse. Our home is on the high end of our street, so we have never flooded. It all runs down the street to the connecting street, and into the storm drains or creek. I heard about some flooding downtown, but, nothing major.
As far as full basements go, they are pretty rare here. Although, they do exist in some of the older homes in Austin proper and buildings down on the UT campus, etc., that were built way back when. With many homes here on hillsides, we do what we call a walkout basement. Essentially, a half basement below the main level, with a retaining wall, that you can walk out to the back from. And, on rare occasion, we do actually get requests for full basements on flat property.
Most homes here are built on a 4”-thick, reinforced, monolithic concrete slab, with reinforced perimeter beams, and reinforced interior beams with no more than 400 sq. ft. between.
The 2 homes we lived in in No Cal had crawl spaces below the floor. There were registers in the floor for the central heat. There was no central air.
Thanks again for your concern…!!! :)

Well, black ice in particular, is a huge hazard (not that regular ice on the road isn't). Personally, I don't drive if there is any ice -- I always wait a few days after a storm before I get back in the car. I'll drive on plowed snow roads, but that's all.

As for studded tires, it is a toss-up as to what states allow them, and I was surprised that my state still does. Oh -- chains can still be used as well, if its during a big snowstorm, for example. (My father would use chains intermittently, in the winter weather. As a kid, I used to like the sound of the chains, as the cars drove by.) :p I know, I'm weird. :hilarious:

I like that chains on snow sound too, although I haven’t heard it in many years. I’ve mentioned before that the then 1-year-old Chevy Camper Special truck and camper that my folks bought from a guy back in No Cal came with chains, as he drove it into the mountains often.
We had those 3 rather large (for us) snow events back in ‘85 within a month of each other, and Pop put the chains on all 3 times.
Wasn’t such a pleasant sound when the snow got a bit patchy just before the chains had to come off…!!!!! :hilarious:
