TX is not in the Salt Belt. The Salt Belt is from MN to ME, MO to VA. The Salt Belt states dump ( especially the NorthEast states ) so much salt on the roads to prep for inclement weather .

Just a little tidbit here from MA. The state will also use a brine mixture for de-icing. (As an fyi: I copied a paragraph from the Conservation Law Foundation, that explains the process.)

Massachusetts has a reduced salt policy, and currently pre-treats its roads with brine when possible to decrease the use of road salt. Brine is a 23% salt solution that reduces the amount of salt spread on roads by 15% to 30%. The solution also reduces the amount of chloride released into the atmosphere by 14% to 29%. :)

1 C? That's not too bad. Our high here this week has been -5C with a feels like around -13C....which I looked up and even the feels like temp is around 8* Fahrenheit. In Wyoming we always plugged our cars in at night in the winter. They all have block heaters to keep them from freezing. If you don't plug it in, your car won't start. But here we've never needed a block heater. I don't think it's ever been down to 0F here before since I've lived here.
Depends on the car and the age of the battery. I lived in Vermont for decades and never had a block heater. My cars always started up as long as it had a strong battery. That's why I recommend putting in a new battery at least every 3 years if you live in a very cold climate or you don't drive the car far enough to recover the power used to start it. When that oil is as thick as peanut butter, it requires a lot of electrical power to turn the engine over.

Paid off or the warranty has just expired
My Cadillac was like that. It came with a 100K bumper to bumper warrantee. It had a few minor problems during those miles. Shortly after it hit 100K things started to go. It had just a little over 140K on it when I sold it for almost nothing because it needed head gaskets ($6000). By that time it Blue Booked for $900.00. I love my Quicken program, but when I look it up and find out that that last 40K miles cost me over $10,000.00 I almost cried.

We never prepped with salt before a storm in Vermont. That would be a waste of salt because cars, trucks, etc. running over salt crystals would just crush them into powder and the wind would clear it away. There was no prepping except getting the salt trucks out to the highways where our crews were out waiting for the storm to start and immediately started to clear and salt/sand the highways before they could become impassible. Didn't always work if a nor'easter rolled in but it did get a jump on things. Here in NC, they do what I laughingly call prepping by running strips of brine on the roads. Just two 2 inch strips per lane. That is usually done 12 or more hours before the expected storm. What usually happens is that around here it rains first and that turns to snow gradually. The air turbulance from cars dry the brine and it blows that off the remaining salt or rain washes the brine off the road rendering it absolutely useless. On interstates where the bridges freeze before the rest they just make people get off on the exit before the bridge and go back on just the other side. All they would need is a pickup with a load of sand spread on the bridges and all would be good. There are enough good old boy pickups down here that it shouldn't be a problem to recruit folks to do it. Now they don't go out in force until after the storm has left the area.

Hopefully they already made their Valentine's Day meal plans tomorrow.

I know my parents already made their meal plans. They are having Kansas City Style Baby back Ribs, Sweet Potato fries with marshmallow dipping sauce, drunken apples, baked beans, and cornbread for their Valentine's day meal tomorrow at their home.

They bought Kansas City style baby back ribs from Menard's when they were on sale. My dad is going to make the ribs, marshmallow dipping sauce, the drunken apples, baked beans, and cornbread.

Thank you sir. You were an inspiration.

I am presuming it is that poor innocent groundhog. Y'all are crazy attributing the weather to a rodent. All he wants to do is be left in peace. Oh no you drag him out of his hole and pretend to understand if he sees his shadow.

That's good to know. Doesn't fare well for condo owners and apt renters where their cars sit frozen in the open parking lot.
Nope. There was someone from work who said her car wouldn't start when she went to go home from work, but that wasn't at night. Her car started in the morning, but then wouldn't start again in the afternoon, but she said she'd been having problems with the battery for a while, so I'm betting it was that and not just the cold.

Some updates from here.

The Good:
Finally got Fiber 200/100Mbps internet on one line. My older line also got upgraded to fiber albeit at lower speeds. 30/10 in the other.
And I still have the older cable modem I want to ditch. Which is now sitting at 30/2 in the cable modem after the downgrade to pay less.
I will probably set later a router with dual wan load balancing to use all these and avoid just wasting them sitting doing nothing. Or just cancel the Cable.
Boss actually calmed down these days. Hopefully we wont be getting too much of his antics.
I'm almost all healed up after getting a strong case of salmonella last week x_x

The bad:
Still no decent job offer. Most just tell me the classic "found someone else, or your skill set are good but not what we're looking for" (aka, we found you're not in the USA or CAN area)
My uncle from USA just passed away today. He was terminal for a week and had no clue.
Sad that I could not meet face to face last trip.
Glad you are feeling better, but I'm sorry about the job search. I'm betting it's difficult right now, especially because so many businesses are having to lay off employees rather than hiring new people.

And I'm sorry for your loss. Was he your only family in the US?
