Wow, that's a lot. For me it's The Happiest Millionaire. I've seen it more than enough times. Unfortunately never on the big screen. I know it's not most people's cup of tea, but I just adore that movie. No matter what is wrong I can just put that movie on and be provided with complete escapism. All of the old Disney live action films do that form me but The Happiest Millionaire is my absolute favorite film.

I've never seen it - but that is a very joyful poster.

Yeah, I was never in a hurry for my kids to experience in sadness and depressing topics. There was time for all that later. I was the same way when my DD was in 4th grade, I told her next to nothing about 9/11 and kept her away from the TV. I gave her a brief war type explanation. Years later she knew more, don't think it hurt her growth. My DS on the other hand we spoke quite a bit, 5 years made a big difference in being able to process that type of information.
I was in first grade. My brother had been born the week before. My mother was very out of it. I knew nothing of 9-11 until I was older.

As far as books in school go, I think that because kids have had it rough in life is specifically why they should not have to read super-depressing books. If they have it rough as it is, why should they be forced to read books that make them feel even worse? Let them read happier books and use it to escape for a bit. Or give them books that are a mix. I've mentioned my love of Anne of Green Gables. She has to go through a lot of trauma, but the book ends well. Balanced books are good. Depressing books...ugh.

That, and some kids are not going to want to read depressing books, and you'll lose their attention. On my brother's IEP, they said that he could not put events in a story in order. My mother, when she brought the report home, was feeling upset about it, until I called my brother over. "How did they break the elevator on Big Bang Theory?" I asked him. He could tell me exactly how. Then I asked him about what happened after Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf went to see Elsa in the ice castle. He told me Elsa built a giant snowman, tossed them out, and Anna said, "It is not nice to throw people!" That was putting events in order.Turns out that he couldn't put events in order for a really depressing book they were reading. But give him something he's interested in...and he'll do wonders for ya.
