The Best Feeling.....

The Best Feeling

  • The day you head to WDW has arrived.

  • Your first sight of the "Welcome to Walt Disney World Resort" signs.

  • Your WDW vacation packet has arrived in the mail.

  • Your first sighting of the monorail as you just enter Disney property.

  • That first sight of the spires of Space Mtn or Cinderella Castle at MK.

  • Those first steps into a park after going through the turnstiles.

  • Those first moments on Disney transportation heading to your first destination.

there is a range of emotions that occur with the accompanying events...

-planning is always fun. daydreaming. selecting destination restaurants and which parks on which days. the possibilities are endless. the "world" is ours!

-the suitcase staging area in the days [er, weeks...um, months] before departure. determination. all business. charts, graphs, lists.

-hitting the cold air [i live in the north] as i leave my house for the airport before dawn and smelling the polluted air of o'hare field knowing that i am finally going home. i am on an adventure. a sense of bewilderment accompanies me on my quest.

-the first hint of warm, humid florida air [juxtaposed against the cold, polluted o'hare field air i just left 3 hours ago] as you exit the plane into the tunnel thingy. this is when it really hits me. happiness begins. i hate airports. i LOVE arriving at mco. and within seconds, i'm on the first ride of the trip...the airport monorail thing. i am usually calm and happy and trying to ignore the unhappy people walking against the current because their trip is over.

then there is a bit of a lull. disney magical express is usually a little less than magical especially if its crowded. but that feeling usually dissipates as i track the bus route progress on my phone GPS. and then for me the holy grail of feelings...

-when i smell the lobby air and fountain at CSR. La Fuente de Las Palomas! the vacation has started!

- i usually go to epcot on day 1 after check-in. usually a nice early dinner [it will be le cellier this fall]. then after a grand disney feast and the sun has set, i begin getting tired after a long day of travel. and i walk the long walk back to my bus through future world taking in the ambiance and sounds at dusk. this too is a great feeling.

-finally [i know you didn't ask for all this], that first morning waking up at home. the quiet mornings around lago dorado are rarely mentioned among disney addicts. well, you are missing out. and the first one of the trip is usually the best. breakfast never tasted so good [an omelet at the pepper market] and then onto the MK and thus we are back at the OP's original poll and going through the MK turnstiles. the music. the smell. the hum of the monorail.

sorry if i bored you all. but i will balance this long list with the single worst feeling of the trip. after a week to ten days of pure unadulterated joy, you ignorantly return from a long day at one of the parks to find your eviction notice on your door. oh yeah, i don't really live here and i have to go home. this leads to one of the worst acts i ever perform in my life anywhere- packing a suitcase in a disney hotel [because it means you're leaving]. just put me in jail, that would be better. :]

I never had plans that we'd go to WDW every year. Me, I'm thrilled to but I didn't want to feel like I was dragging my husband. So for a period of a few years, the best feeling was when he'd come sit in front of the computer and say Time to make reservations for Disney. YES!! Now we don't even pretend any more that we aren't already thinking about next year's trip. But I voted for something else. We take a flight that leaves at 6am so it's already a long day, luggage, flight, rent a car, etc. First day is always MK, and when we're past security, past the turnstiles and the magic hits as you're looking up Main Street. That's a happy moment.

Once i see the grand sign over the road i know i have arrived. i'm going to have that feeling over and over again as i go to all the different places though. the same feeling overwhelms me at every little thing i like. but i'm equally sad when something comes to an end. Like leaving the park at night. or knowing that your not coming back to a certain place again for awhile. i really just want to live there.

I remember one night when I had a hard time sleeping. I finally got up, pulled on some gym shorts, and walked out to the Lagoon, where I sat for about an hour or so. It was a drag not being able to sleep, but it was totally cool spending time at night around a totally quiet lagoon!

A few of the best feelings (there are so many) for me are: Seeing Cindy's Castle and the EPCOT ball/WS for the first time each trip, checking into AKL and smelling the wonderful smokey smell/seeing the animals, and hearing "Welcome Foolish Mortals.." when walking into the foyer of the HM each time, also the spanish monorail spiel and smelling "Rome" Alexandria burning.

To me, nothing at WDW comes close to that feeling you get, after you walk through the tunnel at MK, and walk around the flag, and get that first full view of the castle as you gaze straight down Main Street. That sight hits me right in the feels every time.

I was one of the few who clicked on the monorail. Honestly, the real world has been so rough this year that any time of the day at home (or work) that's spent thinking about WDW or actually planning for a trip there is magical right now. I'll take it.

Everything listed is amazing. I guess it just takes me a bit longer to step out of the thought box of it all being so surreal that when we're on the bus on the way to BLT, seeing the monorail really means I'm home. Sounds silly, I know.

For all the thinking, planning, hoping, wishing & dreaming that we do as we count down to the next trip, it takes me a while to realize it's not a dream and the fun and magic of this trip is really happening.
