The Amazing Spider-Man

As excited as I am for Dark Knight Rises, I am getting a bit worried. The official Critic's Choice website is now giving the film a 72/100 (2 stars)

Of course, this can change in time. But the website also gives 2008's Dark Knight a 96/100, and Batman Begins a 91/100. So it seems pretty legit. I hope that low score for TDKR changes for the better, and soon. Even though WB has placed an embargo on ANY critical reviews until 7/18, the Critic's Choice site can still give you a feel for how a movie will turn out. Hopefully we don't have another Spider-Man 3 on our hands.

I am pretty sure nobody has screened the film yet so those numbers fot TDKR mean next to nothing at this point. I am making that judgement because NOTHING has leaked that I can find. Another factor that will drive numbers is that it has been announced this is the final installment so people won't think this is just another installment in a never ending saga. I really think this 'trick' hurt HP at the BO. It makes people feel like they are being strung along. TDKR will conclude the series and people are drawn to that type of resolution.

Again though it all depends on the immersive quality of the story. That will be the difference between 1 Billion globally and 1.5 billion. IMO.

I saw Amazing Spider-Man on Friday night and I, for one, thought it was a decent movie. It wasn't groundbreaking and the 2002 version is still fresh enough in our minds.

Acting? Aside from Alfred Molina, the acting was better across the board in this one...although, I had a tough time when Martin Sheen was on the screen. He looked as if he was struggling with his lines (Maybe he has dentures or false teeth in or something but it looked like his face was uncomfortable or he was struggling with something).

I guess my issue is that I didn't really see a "need" for it but went to see it because he's my favorite superhero.

I liked The Lizard...he did look fake when they had his face on the screen but the fighting, body, movements, and all around temper were great. The first time you see his face though...wow...could've used some more layers or something...it looked so fake.

Emma Stone BLEW Kirsten Dunst away...not even a competition...(Even though they played two different characters...I'm just talking about..."as his love interest.")

IMO, The Dark Knight Rises isn't competing with any of the films this year. I think its biggest competitor is The Dark Knight.

I think to be fair to other films...you can't compare anything to Dark Knight Rises. :P

Please disregard my earlier comment about the Critic's Choice website. I found out Dark Knight Rises also had a score of 70/100 back when it was still in the filming process. LoL
That score is misleading.

No problem. IF you really are "Bob". I have my doubts.

I really like Dark Knight and Inception, but I'm just not "feeling it" with this movie. It's just my personal opinion based on some of the circumstances surrounding Dark Knight. Like I said, I am prepared to eat crow once the box office numbers come out.

I feel you're also dismissing the popularity of Batman. Batman was the first movie I really remember seeing in theaters, though I know I saw quite a few that summer, as I also remember going to Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Batman 89, at the time, was the fifth highest grossing movie of all time and even after the release of the slew of Super Hero films the past few years, has remained one of the top grossers and 4th all time among Super Hero films adjusted for inflation, behind just The Avengers, The Dark Knight, and Spider-Man.

Batman Returns, while better in hindsight, was felt to be a disappointment at the time after the promise of the first, much the same way Ninja Turtles 2 was vs. the original. Batman Forever had the bigger named villains back and threw in Robin, but it and Batman and Robin proved to kill the franchise for a few years. Batman Begins had to fight this in theaters, but overcame it on video and led to the Dark Knight, which is widely loved.

Finally watched The Amazing Spider Man. Bob, I agree with your original post. Decent movie, awful CGI for the Lizard, to the point it was distracting.

Some other thoughts...

I didn't like the whole tie in to Peter's dad studying spiders and how Peter became SpiderMan. It wouldn't take a genius to figure out what happened and it would seem people would be lined up to enter that "spider research room" to get bit. I prefer the unknown/humble spider accidently getting zapped by something by being at the wrong place at the right time plot. This creates some great metaphors such as "nature humbling mankind's technologies", and "Parker's own humility and being where he shouldn't be".

I did like that the web shooters vs. the "organic" shooters in the previous triology. As it should be.

I enjoyed to scenes of Parker/Spiderman doing spidey things alone vs. when he was fighting the Lizard.

I thought the scene when Spidey spun the web in the sewer was clever, but the payoff never materialized.

The movie tried to make you connect with Parker more so than Spidey which was tough because PP's personality in this film was much more withdrawn and harder than Tobie Mcgwuire's. PP did change when he put on the suit ( which is how it should be ) but only in him being more talkative and cocky. You never got the impression he was changing into a different persona - more adult, responsible, yet witty.

Overall I would give it a 6.5-7.0 out of 10. Doc Oc remains the best on screen spiderman villian.
