The Addams Family replacing the little mermaid show on Broadway

would be cool but its not happening.

Lol. We know it isn't coming to WDW. That is the DUH statement of the day. But it is taking The Little Mermaids empty space up in NYC. Heck, somebody has to rent the building even if it is not Disney.

Btw, now that Disney has ended all of these Broadway shows, wouldn't it be super cool if they brought some of them to the parks? Like give Downtown Disney in Disneyland Beauty and the Beast and give us The Little Mermaid. I would really revive the place. I would pay the typical 75-100 dollars to see eather of the two. I guess I can wish.

This has been know for months...well to those of us who work on Broadway. Though The Little Mermaid was selling decently, it was beyond overbudget prior to opening, and the accident involving a member of the ensemble (as well as other safety violations that had caused the show to constantly make changes) has pretty much prevented it from ever turning a profit. So The Nederlander Producing Company, who owns the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, evicted the show to bring in The Addams Family.

Yeah. All broadway shows do tours. usally, they do double runs.

That's actually inaccurate. Very few shows that open on Broadway actually ever tour...and many that tour do so after the Broadway run (Legally Blonde, Young Frankenstein, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Sweeney Todd are examples of recent shows that have toured after the Broadway production closed).

The show stays in NYC while the tour takes America. Sadly, like so many awesome shows (9 to 5 and Spamalot) they sorta get cancelled like T.V. shows do. So, it is not a good sign for Disney that Little Mermaid closed after only 2 years. Most Disney shows have lasted around 10 years. This is Disney's sencond flop in a row. The first one was Tarzan.

Broadway shows, particularly musicals, are very expensive. The weekly running cost of a show like Wicked is around $600K per week. The Little Mermaid was rumored to cost more. 95% of all shows that open on Broadway never recoup their initial investment. As such, if a show isn't taking in its weekly running costs, then it is actually losing money. The producers usually close the show (or theater-owners can evict the show) when it's clear it will only hemmorage money. And for the record, Tarzan was actually on its way to recoup, but The Little Mermaid was in danger of closing before its out of town tryout in Denver, so a decision was made to close Tarzan and divert resources there.

And you are right. Adams Family shoud be in Chicago untill 2010. I know Wicked stared in L.A. oretty typical.

The Addams Family is scheduled to open in October (I believe) in Chicago and close in early February. While pre-Broadway tryouts aren't rare, they aren't as typical as you imply. They actually add to the show's initial investment and can decrease the show's viability. Though this Broadway season does have an unusual number of shows coming in that have out of town tryouts. And for the record, Wicked had its tryout in San Francisco, not LA.

Pretty much no one in the theater community is sad to see Disney close its second show as a loss. It was one of the worst-reviewed shows this decade, and it really was taking up valuable space. I'd never been so embarassed to be seen coming out of a theater before in my life, and if you think I was embarassed, you should hear what the cast really thought of the show!

What's wrong with voyage of the Little Mermaid? A pleasant family show, that meets the needs of the younger visitors of the park! Its the kids that will keep the adults coming back!

I brought my theater class to see it shortly after it opened, and I still hear about how bad it was. I have to agree; it was pretty disheartening to see how bad it was. The only show I can think of that was almost as bad was the revival of West Side Story.

I was expecting jt to come in here and say Addams Family replacing Little Mermaid in DHSS is all part of the "sheriff's" master plan for WDW... :ROFLOL:

There was nothing factually inaccurate in my post. As someone who actually works on Broadway, I have a much clearer vision about it than you do.

You have no idea where I worked or have worked. You don't know me. If you really think Disney only planned The Little Mermaid to last only a year, than you must be worikng at the Shrek musical. Disney wants to make profits. That is what they are about. Yes, Wicked might cost alot a week, but if it were not turning profit, it wouldn't be showing still. Thats the bottom line. What happens is, if the show is popular enough, they will take it on tour. The decision is made often times months in advance. Then, by the time the tour is announced, the show is ending it's Broadway run for whatever reason. Most of your list of shows have been on tour for a while and then closed on Broadway. Show like, Hairspray, Grease, Spamalot and Ave. Q. toured, then closed. (Btw, Wicked had two tours simultaneously this year, I saw them both). Broadway has had a tough year (but still making $$$). Disney is barley holding on. Once The Little Mermaid tour ends, we will most likely never see it again. Once again, that is not good.

And by the way, the reviews for the show were very mixed. I personally thought it was weak.

I, for one, LOVED the Little Mermaid on Broadway. I saw it twice. I loved the music and I thought the sets were very creative. I have a seen A LOT of Broadway shows it it was definitely at the top of my list. I understand why it may of had to close for financial reasons, but I was absolutely never embarassed to walk out of that theatre! Now Mary Poppins, that is another story...I didn't enjoy that one at all!!

It IS happening on Broadway. This is NOT a WDW thread.

I was reading through threads and one of the posters said that an Addams Family show is replacing Voyage of The Little Mermaid. I think this is an excellent idea since the attraction is becoming dated and is not on par with other shows at WDW.

Yes the subject mentions broadway, but in the thread it mentions the Addams Family replacing the Voyage of the Little Mermaid. The broadway show is called Disney's the Little Mermaid, not Voyage of the Little Mermaid. It also says attraction and WDW. Now was I really that far off??

I don't mind it being replaced on Broadway, but in WDW, I think the Addams Family replacing the DHS attraction would be a bad idea.
