The 60th Anniversary of Disneyland: The Reality of it All

Tomorrowland is weak in almost all the Castle parks, but it's at its weakest in Anaheim. Orlando and Tokyo aren't far behind, but I think Anaheim's cheap Paul Pressler "New Tomorrowland" in 1998 gave it a handicap that still drags it down.

The 1967-1977 version of Anaheim's Tomorrowland was brilliant. I remember in the 1970's how Tomorrowland was absolutely THE PLACE in the park to be. Especially after sundown, with movement and lighting and music and dancing, it was pure magic.

I just hate how Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear have nothing that really defines them. The buildings all look the same, they just have a sign identifying what's inside. Awful. Magic Kingdom has the same thing. I kinda hate the layout of Tomorrowland.

Apologies if this has been covered already and I missed it, but...

Was wondering if anybody has insight into the future status of Soundsational once Paint the Night hits the streets of DL? I've heard mixed stories...PtN replaces Soundsational, some other yet-to-be-announced parade replaces Soundsational, Soundsational lives on as an afternoon parade while PtN is the nighttime parade, etc.

I'm excited about the new stuff coming, but I also rather enjoy Soundsational and hope it survives past May 22. My preference is that Soundsational becomes the afternoon parade and Paint the Night is the nighttime parade (akin to the arrangement with Festival of Fantasy and MSEP in MK). But my preference will likely have little bearing on reality.

A far cry from the elaborate facades of Tomorrowland '67 or WDWs '71 :D I always liked when Tomorrowland was super minimalistic though -- on both coasts.

Soundsational isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Hopefully Pixar Play will get the axe first - that dinosaur needs to go.

It's a shame that the most creative and fun float, Ratatouille, had to be eliminated completely.

I would love to see Mickey and friends in a DCA parade. The Eureka parade with the fab 5 would have been great.

I couldn't agree more!

Tomorrowland was at its absolute best, on both coasts, when it was just a sea of gleaming white buildings with towers and tailfins built in, with a ground slathered in light blue slurry coat. And almost the only way you knew what ride was which was by whose lighted corporate logo was rotating slowly on a white spire above it: Goodyear, General Electric, Coca-Cola, Monsanto, McDonnell Douglas, Eastern Air Lines, RCA, General Dynamics, The Bell System, etc.

And the CM's staffing the rides had mod polyester jumpsuits, or pretty hostesses in miniskirts, all with corporate patches sewn on them for whatever ride they were working at.

It was just a magical time to be in Tomorrowland back then. Not like today's Tomorrowland, which is mostly junk and decay and lowered expectations. And not a jumpsuit or miniskirted hostess in sight.

Forget about the real 21st century, kid. The girls won't look like this any more when you get there.

Sorry for my Tomorrowland vent. Back to the 60th topic...

This note was on MiceAge tonight, about the nametags for the CM's. Kind of a bummer, if true.

"March 10, 2015: MiceAge Editor Note – Anaheim Cast Members should prepare to be underwhelmed instead of dazzled. Their new 60th Anniversary name tags are approved, and TDA went the cheap route and simply applied a new slogan and some glitter to the existing name tags they've had since 2006. The CM's were hoping for something new and truly dazzling to wear. Let's hope the rest of the campaign is more worthy of celebrating."

24 hour 60th anniversary kickoff party coming to Disneyland May 22nd and 23rd. It is mentioned at the bottom of the WDW 24 hour party press release. Expect a blog post about it later today.

"24 Hours of Fun as Disneyland Resort in California Kicks Off Diamond Celebration of the 60th Anniversary

On the West Coast, Disneyland Resort will kick off the summer with a dynamic 24-hour event of its own, May 22-23, to launch the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. Marking the 60th anniversary of the resort, the Diamond Celebration includes the premieres of three new nighttime spectaculars: “Disneyland Forever” fireworks, “Paint the Night” parade and “World of Color – Celebrate!”

The all-day/all-night revelry of the 24-hour party will include dancing and special character encounters at locations in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks, along with enchanting Diamond dcor throughout the resort and the exciting shows and attractions that bring guests back year after year. The Disneyland Resort invites guests of all ages to kick off the summer travel season in Southern California, celebrating 60 years of magic at a resort that remains forever young."

Lovely...another 24-hr party... Not like we haven't see that before.

I most likely won't be there.

I've heard both praise and disdain for these 24 hour events - at least at WDW. Some people hate the crowds and people who overestimated their ability to stay out, others say it's a blast and worth doing at least once. Is there more of a consensus one way or the other regarding the events in California?

I wanted to hit the parks on the 22nd to see the premier of one of the new shows, but not if it will be the 24 hour party. I do have a wedding to attend that weekend, so I guess I can leave town a little earlier. I'll see the stuff on a weekday.

At DLR these events are very crowded so don’t expect to go on many rides and there will be long lines for food as well. It used to be only DL but it got so jammed they started including DCA. You can enjoy it if you go in with the right attitude. It will be packed and expect unusual things like DJ’s blasting dance music on Main St.

Traditionalists tend to hate these things because they don’t want to see the parks in this all out almost rave like party mode. You will get people that love them and people that hate them.

I found this interesting on the Parks Blog post: After dark, along the Disneyland park parade route, 24-hour event guests will be among the first to see the new “Paint the Night” parade

So is PTN opening before the 22nd? Or am I reading too much into it?
