That 70s WDW Vibe

Some places in wdw still reek of the 70s, most particularly in epcot.. am I the only one that picks up on this and actually likes it? for example the color scheme on the mary blair mural at the contemporary, pretty much anywhere in the polynesian, the norwegian ride, some parts of mk. I'm an 80s baby but I find the remnants of the 1970s in wdw appealing for some odd reason.. anybody else pick up on those 70s Vibes?

Oh, gosh, you aren't the only one. As the decades slip along here, the 1970's vibe at WDW becomes more charming in my opinion.

I pick up on the 70's when the Magic Kingdom isn't very crowded and you can really see the hugely wide, sweeping walkways that are slathered in that slurry paint. It's a very 70's technique that WDI has gotten away from in the last 20 years, but it just screams "NIXON WAS HERE!" to me for some reason. It's rather attractive though for the most part.

True, but the technology and general look of that attraction is very rooted in early EPCOT style. If I didn't know it opened in 1988 it would be very easy to believe it was an opening day attraction.

Epcot opened in the 80s.

Not really, it has that late 80's vibe. Sorry to call you out but I've never gotten a 70's Vibe from Epcot just 80's :D

It must depend on perceptions, because I think most of EPCOT's early years are absolutely dripping with late 70s design style. Of course Disney has done quite a lot to reduce those aspects over the last 15 years or so, but some small hints still remain. I think they might be easier to pick up on if you've actually seen the 70s and early 80s for yourself.

Even if it WAS "an opening day attraction", that would make it a late 1982 attraction then... not 1970s.

Right, okay, I GET IT. EPCOT opened in the 80s, sure, I know that.

The concept being missed by some is that the style of the 70s wasn't simply switched off on January 1 1980, and because a lot of the early design style of EPCOT was created in the 70s it still has that vibe.

It's always interesting to stumble upon leftovers from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. There's plenty in Tomorrowland; my two personal favorites there is the SSE overflow line (which is never used) and this one wall near the Space Ranger spin FP machines. There's also WOM over at Epcot, which reeked of the 90s, and that one corridor over at Innoventions that's more or less still looks like it belongs in Communicore. And anyone who's taken the Behind the Seeds tour at the land might have noticed that the backstage area still has an 80s feel.

The Polynesian lobby. WDW goodness there.

Right on!

The Poly is '70s Central'. If you want a trip back in time....for real..( not snythetically created ala 'Pop'...) i highly recommend anyone here new to The World to check it out. All it needs is a disco ball in the lounge....

Love it.

They could retheme this place to the '70s Hotel' if they really wanted to....and not change a whole lot. Just take away those plants, and POOF! The last three decades never happened....

The SE overflow is used on NYE. Other than that, though, you are correct in saying it is hardly used.

What's so special about this wall near SRS FP machines?
