Teppan Edo vs. typical hibachi joint

I'm surprised to hear so many people call it pricey - it's right around what we pay locally on Long Island. But then again, we also pay over $4.00/gallon for gas so things here are pretty inflated right across the board, I suppose.

We always go - it's familiar food for the kids and they love the Disney spin on things.

Big fan of TE and go there on every trip. It is not as good as our local hibachi place, which is top of the line but it is fun and familiar. Sake and a sapporo in Japan is always a highlight for us. I disagree that it is pricey, same prices relative to all hibachi places.
The prices at Teppan Edo or around 20%-30% higher than similar places around WDW.

I just compared it to home and the prices are pretty similar. I don't venture off property in Orlando much either but fair point based on Orlando knowledge. That said, what is this relative to? TE is not "pricey" relative to Disney World itself. If we deem TE "pricey" then we should deem a substantial amount of the restaurants at Disney "pricey" because their prices are typically above market price. As you know, margins are much higher at Disney. Unless one assumes that they will be eating off property to save money, then this point should not factor into whether a person dines at TE or not. You should just consider quality, ambiance, personal taste, etc...

Normally I would agree with you. I expect to spend more at Disney even if it was simply due to convenience, but in the case of TE we have a pretty significant price jump coupled with a quality drop. For that reason TE as well as Tokyo Dining simply does not make or list of places we like to eat at WDW. When the mood for Teppanyaki strikes us we head to Kobe which is about 5 minutes past DTD.

We're thinking about reserving a spot at Teppan Edo and we're wondering how you all (who have eaten there) would compare it to a typical hibachi restaurant in your hometown. Better? The same? I notice the menu doesn't include fried rice like the local places around here do. Is that due to it not being authentic to Japan? Thanks.
If you've never done a hibachi before then I'd say do it. But if you have ever been to a Benihana it's no big deal.

Great responses everyone! We really enjoy our local hibachi spots. I think the draw for us is the convenience/cool factor of getting hibachi within Epcot and continuing our day at the park afterwards. As long as the flavor and portions are good, we'll be happy. Even at about $30 per entree compared to $25 locally.

Teppan has way better quality food then our local Kobe and the price is about the same. It is one of our favorite places to eat at WDW. As far as the fried rice thing, fried rice is Chinese not Japanese that is why they do not serve it.

If you have a local Teppan place that you love I would have to recommend skipping Teppan Edo since it probably will not be as good as you have back home. I am kind of surprised that people find it expensive since after looking at the menu, it is probably one of the few menu's that I have seen that is not overpriced compared to what I can get at home.

I thought the food was really good, but it was not any different than a local hibachi. I had heard all of the jokes and had seen the same tricks. I wished I would have chosen a restaurant I had never visited while at Epcot. If you do go check to see if they add gratuity to your check. I tipped on top of the added gratuity.

We eat at Teppan Edo virtually every trip. Compared to a hibachi restaurant near us, Teppan Edo is slightly less stellar. But we have a really awesome hibachi here. I suspect most hibachi restaurants try very hard. Teppan Edo is also much much much more expensive! However, since it is in Disney, provides good/interesting food with an entertaining preparation, it is part of our usual dining rotation.

My DH is not the daring type when it comes to trying new foods, but he loves this place, so we always go here. As far as price, we recently went to a place in Westport, CT that was even pricier. And while I try to watch my budget at home, I kinda go hog wild at the World.
Westport and Greenwich are the most exclusive (expensive) places to live in Ct. That is why.

Well the included fried rice thing depends on where you are in the country, I know in Atlanta it is usually an up charge.

Teppan Edo is cool for a little kid and has great views of the fire works. The food like most disney food is blander than you would get going out to a normal restaurant. They do this IMO to satisfy everyone's taste.

My husband raved about the taste and tenderness of the steak!
The boys really enjoyed the "show".
There was a mix-up w/ the chefs, so our meal was delayed, but that was no big deal!;)
The waitresses are so kind and sweet. They smile and say "Arigato" all of the time.:)
The steaming onion ( never made much sense to me) they call Space Mountain thrilled my little guys.!:)
Overall, I'd say go. Maybe also think about trying Tokyo Dining w/ choices of sushi, tempura, and other Japanese delights w/o the "hibachi" style dinner. Great place to see Illuminations!:)
