Taking a Vacation "Break"

Does anybody ever take a "break" from their vacationing to do normal things?

I know "a lot" of people go to church while on their trips.

I personally make sure if it is Hockey Season, especially in the playoffs, to get to the ESPN Zone to watch a game.

I have also gone to movies before if it is a premire weekend.

But this last trip, I actually spent a night watching LOST.

Last year I had just finished the First Season DVD, and TiVoed the premire. This year, I couldn't wait though. We cut a night short at DTD last week just to watch LOST.

Does anybody else plan their trip around everyday things? I know some people workout. Watch games. Go to Church.

What do you do?

We've gone to the movies at DTD. I also like hanging out in the book department of the Virgin Megastore, just reading for a while. Watching TV shows we normally watch at home is part of our routine after a long day at the parks. No matter how ordinary these things may be, when you're doing them while on vacation at WDW, they still feel different and a little bit more fun!

To catch a tv show? Nah... we'll just set it to record on our DVR. We've done movies at DTD though (a little tradition of ours).

However, on our upcoming trip, we are doing a little something different than we usually do. We are having a "No Parks" day

We want to lay around the pool, or go to DTD, or the Boardwalk, or mini golf. Whatever. We decided we're going to wing it for the day.

So it's kinda like a break

We take a little break from WDW at least once per trip. We'll catch breakfast off grounds, usually at the Denny's, dump the camera's memory at Walgreens, do a little shopping at the cheaper discount stores in the area and then make it back on grounds by lunch.

We also do mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens, have pool time & watercraft time, visit ESPN Club & the Boardwalk and of course DTD -- but I still consider all those things vacation activities, even though they're not park activities.

It was just one hour. At 9PM so we didn't miss much. It was also an 11 day trip. But WE COULDN'T MISS LOST!
You must of loved that episode last week. I loved it. Did you see the "others" shirts over at the ToT. I got one. They're coming. That is something that is a day that I never go to the parks so I can watch that and CBS on Thursday. CSI and the new show Shark.

I wouldn't really say we do "normal" things, but we do usually have a non Disney day. Sometimes we will go to one of the malls, drive to Daytona, Cocoa or Port Canaveral, visit relatives or check out the local Harley shops. Sometimes you just need to get away from the parks for a day, (heresy, I know) especially if it is one of the busier times.

That's why DTD has the AC, great place to laugh, drink lightly and generally have a blast!! Try it, the show starts at 7pm and for all underage visitors ends at 9pm. After that you need to be at least 18 and pay to stay. Hopefully we can do that this Nov., still what you get to see is fantastic! 27 days and counting till our 3rd visit this year..... NOT SOON ENOUGH!!! :D :sohappy:

I was thrilled that my vacation feel before the premiere of LOST, otherwise I would have gone to the room early and watched it too.

I probably should not admit this one, but years ago my husband and I went to WDW for our honeymoon and I got this crazy craving to eat at Olive Garden. Crazy, huh...especially since there is all that AWESOME food at WDW. But for some reason, I just really wanted Olive Garden lasagna. So, we hopped in the rental car and went driving till we found an Olive Garden. It was a great dinner and a funny memory we still have 13 years later.

On the Disney Cruise I slowed down and saw a movie.

At WDW, I'm usually non-stop, but will sometimes see the fireworks from a resort rather than the crowded park. Even if there's not music, I have the soundtracks, so its fun on ipod, even if the timing isn't 100% correct.

In the future there is one near UCF it is about a half hour away from Disney though. It is pasted the airport.

This is one situation where you guys that get to visit for a week or more have an advantage over us local types. We rarely get to spend more than a long weekend, so the idea of "getting away" during our trips is a bit foreign to us.

That said, I can say that I remember as a child having a day where we didn't do any exciting activities or anything...and they seem to be the more peaceful memories of vacation! I distinctly remember my parents renting a golf cart at Fort Wilderness (I think we stayed there in 1976 or 77...can't remember which), playing air hocky with my sister in the game room, going to the petting zoo..all without ever going to the Magic Kingdom.

If you have the time, sure, take a break from the Magic! It'll keep you going better later.

Hopefully, we'll be able to do a week soon....hopefully!

Interesting and unique question, Jimbo. I think you're looking for normal, mundane activities that you could just as easily do at home. I won't include swimming or mini golf, because they're so much more elaborate at WDW.

I've watched a college basketball game while at the Grand Californian.

On several trips, we've gone to a movie.

On one trip, I found an open gym so I could play basketball.

I almost got the Oceanic Travel Bag. The laptop one. But bad Karma kept me from doing it.

Other than the Weather Channel I rarely watch anything on TV. I do slip away to ESPN zone one day to get over sports watching withdrawl though!

Additionally - it's almost a tradition now to go to DTD and catch a movie.

Absolutely necessary to have at least one lazy stick around the resort day if I'm there for more than a long weekend too!
