So since most of us are here except for @ThatGuyFromFlorida who mentioned they may not be active this round due to school, how about we all say our top 3 ideas and go from there. It can at least help us weed out the lesser ideas we’re not interested in pursuing. Once we have 3 or 4 ideas we can narrow it down from there.

My top 3 are

1. Lord of the Rings
2. Blade Runner
3. Bikini Bottom
That sounds fair. A solid way to weed out through the ideas and figure something out.

1. Star Trek
2. Blade Runner
3. Outer Limits

Heyyo! I'm not familiar with a lot of Universal IPs, or Epic Universe. So I've been doing a little bit of research about it.

What at first looks like a park with a collection of random IPs all connected by a garden in the middle, but when actually looking at it, it's much different. The "universes" are all mystical. A land with dragons, a land with fantastic beasts & magic, a land with monsters, and a land through Nintendo. They are all alternate realities in a way. All connected by this mystical gardens throughout the park. Looking at the concept art, it has this slight out of this world feel. It looks at first like a random IP selection, but once you look at it much further you actually see it's smartly laid out.

Therefore I think the new land needs to fit this mystical, new "universe" theme the park has.

Just by going through IPs that have been brought up, I suggest these sort of fit this theme of the park- Shrek, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings (never seen it , but from the way you guys talk about), Avatar all fit this theme. I worry doing something that is too realistic will break the theme of the park.

Looney Toons & Batman may be too similar to what's offered at Six Flags Parks, plus really don't fit the theme of the park. Spongebob already has a home in many theme parks around the country, it may be redundant.

Also, as a 17 year old boy, I can tell you that nobody my age knows what Lord of the Rings is. Its something that I know exists, but I do not know one person who has seen the movie. I don't know anything about it.

Hey I was reading LOTR when we were both in sixth grade!

But you make a good point, most younger audiences won't be too well-versed in LOTR and especially Blade Runner. But I don't think that's a too valid reason for getting people to not come. Blade Runner and LOTR are both really interesting IPs that can still attract people even if they haven't seen the movies.

But for the purposes of this project, here is a quick run-down of both.

Lord of the Rings
The origin point of the fantasy genre. A 9hr trilogy of a random Hobbit (half-tall person) who comes into the ownership of the One Ring and has to wander through the evil land of Mordor to destroy it at its origin point, the volcano Mt. Doom. Meanwhile the evil forces of Sauron want the ring back to achieve victory. Frodo is accompanied by a variety of companions but the group eventually splits off into various other groups fighting in the war. There's a lot of possible set-pieces, from chase sequences to big battles, that could be turned into a ride. There are also many unique landscapes you can only find in LOTR.

The LOTR movies have a prequel trilogy, the Hobbit, which is based on only one Hobbit book and is basically ridiculously overdone and attempting to turn the children's book by the same author into another LOTR. I like the Hobbit book but the movies have left a sour taste in many so I suggest sticking to LOTR.

I recommend everyone watch LOTR at some point, they are fantastic movies (the last one won Oscar Best Picture, yes, a blockbuster won best picture). They should be fun for all.

Blade Runner
Very very different from LOTR. Set in a dystopian future where capitalism has become far too widespread. Robots, called "replicants" resemble humans in many ways but are not treated the same and must be hunted down by human detectives. The movie is constantly questioning whether robots have the same rights as man. There are not many action beats I can think of, but we can always create our own narratives built into the established world.

The movies are long and a bit confusing first watch, so if you are looking for an interesting art film, these are certainly for you. If not... well, tbh it's not as universal as LOTR. But I enjoy its unique vision.

----

My picks:
1. Blade Runner
2. Lord of the Rings
3. RDR / Wild West

I know we mentioned a Nickelodeon Pixar Pier style area, but what about a Dreamworks TDS Fantasy Springs Style Area? I know it won't make too much sense with Dragon being a seperate land, but at the same time, Cars Land & Pixar Pier exist in the same park!

Shrek, Madagascar, Trolls, Kung Fu Panda? I think it could turn out cool. Maybe we can connect Dragon into it as well, with them being right next to each other.

I don't really have a preference on what IP we use. Besides Spongebob & Shrek, I'm really not familiar with many of them. But I'll be happy to research it when we choose one!

Just remember, unless there's been a pre-existing media crossover (a la Universal Monsters or Super Smash Bros for Nintendo) we'd like for only a single IP to be represented in your land.
Do bad licensed games count? :p

LORD OF THE RINGS
I think the land should be focused around Hobbiton and Rivendell (the elves' home) with the Misty Mountains in the Back. There are two ways to go about this. One, we capitalize the most on LOTR and give the ride an "Escape from the Mines of Moria" attraction as the e-ticket, while announcing plans to build a second LOTR land in IOA or the Studios afterward for the Gondor and Mordor themed areas. OR we go with the more realistic approach of one land, in which case we might want to add Mordor into the area, or at least an attraction that goes to Mordor.

Hobbiton I think would be great as you'd be basically following Frodo's footsteps on his journey. There could be a carnival there with some small flats and a fun Gandalf firework show. Moving further is a small forest that leads to Rivendell, home to the e-tickets.

1590359316950.png

STAR TREK
I see two main options. The first is we base it at Starfleet HQ on Utopian Earth. This would give it a Tomorrowland vibe. The attraction could be a training course for Starfleet that goes horribly wrong when the Romulans / Klingons / Borg attack.

The second option would be to set it on an alien planet. The Enterprise is on its 5 year quest and they need you to investigate some anomaly on the planet. In both options I think the parts of the Enterprise should be explorable, as it's the most iconic part of the franchise.
1590359413756.png
1590359436896.png

BLADE RUNNER
Set this entirely inside so it's constantly simulating rain overheard. Very dark and gritty. A maze of streets with all sorts of hidden quirks here and there. The attractions should probably not be tied to the movies, instead, you would go on your own hunt for Replicants as a Blade Runner. Maybe use the flashlights from Monsters Inc Hide and Go Seek?

These are just my ideas so please feel free to reject them and suggest your own!

Thinking about Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, there are some key locations in Middle Earth (where the series takes place) that I think could be used to create a really beautiful land. I think this could be accomplished without the use of Mordor and Sauron (and that would probably be best as an attraction anyways), but I think a really cool idea for the LotR land is to highlight the worlds of the three most important races in the series, which are hobbits, elves, and dwarves. By highlighting these three, I think we can tell a beautiful story that would automatically improve the park and highlight the epic nature of this franchise and the worlds within it.

The hobbits live in the Shire, and this is one of the most familiar and important locations in the entire franchise. The Shire is agricultural but not industrialized with hills and woods. It’s mostly made up of villages with a few larger towns.

Rivendell is home of the elves and is one of the most picturesque locations in Middle Earth. It is located in a hidden valley. I couldn’t find tons of info on this location, so it might be a cool opportunity for us to expand the world.

The final location is the Lonely Mountain or Erebor. It was the ancestral home of the Dwarf king and had a great mine. It also became home of the dragon Smaug, one of the primary antagonists of the Hobbit. It later became a Dwarf stronghold throughout the events of the Lord of the Rings.

So I rewatched Blade Runner because it has been so long since I’ve watched it and since it’s one of the top choices (so far) from the voting, and I figured I could toss out some ideas for how to theme the land.

I totally agree with @Outbound to go about this through an indoor land because the entire setting of this film is nighttime. It really is film noir in a sci-fi setting and setting it indoors where climate, light, and “weather” can be controlled I feel is an absolute must. I could also see it being indoors utilizing projections or possibly drones to simulate the flying vehicles up above to make the land more immersive.

I think the land should be like a Diagon Alley where you can take the turn down different pathways with different places to explore and feature a single E-Ticket attraction. You could include different shops or effects throughout the land, some key spots being the Noodle Shop and the robot pet store from the film. Maybe have the club where Deckard encounters one of the replicants be a location, among anything else we could imagine in a post-apocalyptic setting. The great thing here is the freedom to do tons of creative things with the shops, food, and other places to explore.

As for the E-ticket, obviously it’d be set in the police station where you’d be signed up to be a Blade Runner and to hunt down replicants. I would love to see it as a hybrid between Men in Black and Test Track. A high-speed pursuit through the city hunting down Replicants. You’d rack up points by retiring them, but it’d be very hard as you’d be moving faster than a normal shooter ride. It would add a new ride system to Universal parks while also adding a wholly unique attraction unlike ever seen before.

Obviously this is just an idea but if we were to choose Blade Runner, I could see some of these ideas featured

Good point on these. Reflecting the three most iconic groups from Middle Earth would be a nice idea, and give some flow to the area. For instance, maybe starting off with Hobbiton to welcome visitors into the world of Middle Earth.

Also, while it's more The Hobbit rather than Lord of the Rings, I can't help but think of the barrel ride down the river and see something akin to a river rapids ride.

I vote for shrek. Nvm I changed my mind. I want bikini bottom. It could be indoors, and have a simulated elevator ride where you are in a submarine and going down to bikini bottom as the entrance. Also I think a battle for bikini bottom shooting ride would be sweet! And don’t forget the firey fist o pain!

Alright good morning (on my end at least) team! First of all, @ThatGuyFromFlorida, I’m glad you’ll be active this round, the more we have the easier our job will be to delegate tasks.

So, if I’m not mistaken, everyone has casted their votes, so here are the final results.

1. Lord of the Rings (6 votes)
2. (Tie) Blade Runner & Star Trek (5 Votes)
3. Shrek (4 Votes)
4. Bikini Bottom (3 Votes)
5. (Tie) Outer Limits & RDR/Western (1 Vote)

At least from my end, it looks like our top 3 are

-Lord of the Rings
-Blade Runner
-Star Trek

so I believe we should move forward and open debate about these three properties. Anyone who has a favorite of the three or has an idea for one or more of them, feel free to make your case. I believe that our goal should be to have our IP decided sometime tomorrow so that we can begin working and have a little under a week to work on it.

I’ll go first and pitch my pros and cons of each

Lord of the Rings
Pros
- Very familiar property. All generations are at least somewhat familiar with it. Incredibly iconic characters, landmarks, etc.
- Family-friendly but with the ability to go darker with it should you choose.
- Six films to choose from (LotR Trilogy & Hobbit Trilogy) giving a lot more opportunity for different attractions.
- Tons of locations, giving option for expansions at the other three parks in the vein of Harry Potter.
- Storyline fits “epic” theme very well
- Potential upcoming animated show keeping the IP fresh.
Cons
- Not owned by Universal, meaning they have to pay for theme park rights.
- Younger audiences may not be as familiar with the property.
- May be too expansive?
- May be the easy and “unoriginal” option
- “Fantasy” Already featured with HtTYD

Blade Runner
Pros
- Tons or opportunity for creativity
- Beloved IP that inspired modern-day science fiction as it is.
- Sequel came out in 2017 keeping the IP fresh in many people’s minds
- More out-of-the-box idea
- Sci-Fi added to the park
Cons
- R-Rated property, less accessible to younger audiences.
- Attraction ideas have to be more creative as there isn’t much inspiration in the film itself
- Land would almost have to be inside as outside would ruin the aesthetic
- IP is more thought-provoking than most others, possibly making it harder to add the nuances into the land
- Not owned by Uni so theme park rights need to be purchased.

Star Trek
Pros
- Beloved IP with tons of dedicated fans and currently running shows with films that wrapped up not too long ago.
- Iconic set pieces such as the USS Enterprise that could be in the same vein as Galaxy’s Edge and the Millennium Falcon
- Merchandising opportunity with shirt colors, phasers, etc.
- Automatic audience upon opening as Trekkies will happily come to the park like Potterheads did already with WWoHP.
Cons
- Younger audiences may not be familiar with the property
- Generally considered the “nerdiest” of the popular IP, possibly not interesting some groups of guests.
- World is less “epic” than the other two ideas.
- Not owned by Uni so theme park rights need to be purchased.

In the end, I think Lord of the Rings is our best option, but I personally prefer Blade Runner. Taking the criteria into account, I think LotR would get us higher points in Realism but Blade Runner would score us higher in creativity, so that’s where I’m at. Personally Star Trek doesn’t do it for me, but I’m excited to hear from all of you.
