My best friend is a supersized person (400+lbs) and is meeting us in Disney. She had rented a EVC for her trip due to her doctor not wanting her to walk becasue of a large herina. I am worried about battery life, since she is so heavy. She rented a heavy duty scooter, and i wonder if it could be plugged in durring meals or something? Will it be harder to get it on buses becasue it is the heavy durty weight model? SHe has not ridden a scooter before (and hopes its like riding a 4 wheeler, ha ha). Any tips would be great (didnt know here to post this)

I do not know of any places in WDW that is set up to periodically charge those scooters. In fact finding an unsecured electrical outlet anywhere inside one of the parks is quite tricky. From my understanding those scooters do have quite a bit of battery lift to them and the heavy duty ones are designed to carry larger loads with the same long battery life. If you are really concerned about it I would contact the ECV rental company as they will have considerably more detailed information about the battery life of a particular scooter. Chances are that it will be a non-issue.

To answer your other question, of course it will be harder to get it on and off the buses, both because of the weight, but more because of her inexperience using one.

Could you go to a store, etc at home and have her try navigating one around aisles, shopping carts, etc?

I opted to use an old fashioned wheelchair when I took my mother, because I knew that she would have difficuly steering an ECV. Of course, my mother weighed less than I at the time, and I'm fairly fit, so it wasn't an issue.

Just a tip, if she is staying at a hotel you might want to tell her not to charge it overnight
in any of the bathroom/sink outlets as a lot of these outlets shut off when you turn
the light switch off. We made this mistake one night staying at AKL and my moms scooter
died in the world showcase at Epcot. My husband was not happy to have to push it
all the way to the parking lot.

I emailed her that one thanks

Be sure to talk in detail to the rental company. Many will bring you a replacement if there are problems - and they may bring a new battery if needed.

HEY THERE! ha ha I knew you posted on here. I didnt know you lived in california now!!

Yes, but only since July, so you're not too far out of the loop. :)

As far as the scooter, I would just do anything you can to avoid Main Street around fireworks. Unless she's the "plow-you-over-if-you-get-in-my-way" type , it would be just plain miserable trying to navigate in those crowds. I can barely do it when I'm there walking around just by myself.

Have fun on your trip!!

I believe that you can plug it in at the ECV rental stations. Beyond that, I suppose you could always ask to plug in somewhere.

I once witnessed an out-of-control-scooter that flew down the hill by SE at Epcot as they were pushing the scooter to the front to plug it in and it got away from the guests, causing an accident and paperwork by me. The guest was unhurt but i made her stay and be evaluated by RCES and sign the paperwork.

The Scooter should hold up okay, my husbands powerchair usually lasts about 12 hours when hes at work at wdw and that is with him moving around most of the day. Just make sure you charge overnight and you should be fine, but if you find you really need to give it a charge guest relations is the place to go, they will help you charge everything from a ECV to a camera battery!!!

If you have any questions about finding an outlet, ask a CM. They're ready to help make your trip magical (most of the time). I'd also recommend checking in at Guest Relations early in the day on the first day of your trip. They often have invaluable advice.

Enjoy your trip!

I sent you a pm.

Here's my experience for everyone else.

We just got back from Disney and long story short, my scooter died while in Epcot. The wonderful CM found a few outlets for me to plug the scooter in and actually ended up doing it quite a few times. There are a lot of outlets available and no one had any issues, but in fact urged me to do it.

My scooter battery said it would last up to 15 hours. Usually we ran it for up to 10. At the end of the night, it was slower than when we started out, but it still usually ran ok. The hardest parks were Epcot and Ak due to the hills.

We carried the charger with us. At night we parked the scooter outside and unhooked the battery (was a scooter that was able to come apart to put in our trunk) and charged it so we didn't have to have the big scooter in our room.

Don't waste your money on an extra battery when you can plug it in if you need to. We did this several times as we were eating.
