Super 8- Amazing

Just back from J.J. Abram's newest film, Super 8. The fact that alot of the movie is still a mystery is a breath of fresh air for me. Seeing it with as little knowledge as possible made it all the more worthwhile. That being said, let me dive into a little review of the film: (a little warning, there are some slight/major spoilers up ahead)

Wow. What an experience. Super 8 is a great start to the summer, and likewise a thrilling rollercoaster on it's own. J.J. Abram's nostlagic look back on Spielberg's earlier films (as well as the director's own childhoods) works very well. There are alot of hints at classic movies, and alot of the style looks and feels like a Spielberg movie.

The acting in Super 8 is very good. The adults, while experienced, definitely take back seat to the child actors. All of the kids in the film are very good, bringing as much emotion and humour to the script as they can. There is never a dull moment in the film, even when the more quiet moments pop up.

As for the film's effects, I was easily impressed. The creature itself is pretty cool looking, however this does lead to one of my bigger complaints about the creature. It looks ALOT like the Cloverfield monster. The design is uncannily like Clover's design. Even the face bares strong resemblances to that creature. Otherwise, the effects for the spaceship (at the end of the film) and other things looks pretty cool.

All that being said, I loved the film. My only major complaint comes around the finale. Without spoiling too much, I'll just say that the movie takes on a heavy E.T. feel out of nowhere (seconds before the characters were running from their lives, and some unfortunate souls were crushed or eaten). Aside from the ending (which isn't bad, just a little surprising) the film is great. It's dark yet lighthearted at the same time. Is J.J. Abrams the next Spielberg? He should be.

Just a note to add. If you see it, stick around for the credits. We went yesterday and the theatre was almost empty when more scenes popped up during the credits.

Over all I liked it but it did have some problems and some gaping plot holes.

*SPOILERS*

What I liked:

-All the main kids were very good and likeable. A lot of their scenes were very funny and well done.

-I liked the classic Spielberg feel and references.

-The scene at the end credits was probably the best part of the movie!

-I liked the 70s throw backs and setting.

-I really loved the sounds the alien made. Really cool and creepy sounding!

What I didn't like:

-I didn't think the ending worked. How did the alien make a spaceship out of the metal things in town? Huh? Second, were we supposed to be happy the alien was going home after he slaughtered who knows how many innocent people?

-How did that one guy survive plowing his truck head on into a deisel ingine?! He'd be smashed to smitherines. At the very least he'd be dead.

-So the old guy's plan was to crash the train and have the alien set free so he could go home? And slaughter a ton of people in the process? Not a very well thought out plan...

-I agree with what was said above. The alien looked way too much like Cloverfield.

- LENS FLARE IS NOT COOL. I really wish JJ Abrams would stop with it because its not interesting or innovative. Its just annoying.

But other than that I enjoyed it for what it was. Definately worth a watch.

I NEVER, NEVER leave the theater until the credits have finished. There have been WAY too many movies that have added surprises at the very end.

All those people spent a lot of time making that movie and you are doing them an injustice to not give them 30-90 seconds of your time.

Plus, if you wait for the credits to finish the ignorant have gotten out of the parking lot.

Agreeed in spirit, but sometimes the bladder rules. Especially in a movie this good, where I didn't dare miss a frame to go to the bathroom.

While I agree the alien and Clover looked alike, they did have their differences. Clover had two full length arms from the shoulders and two smaller "arms" form the torso whereas the Super 8 alien had four full length arms. Faces looked the same but the mouth was smaller on the alien than Clover. The eyes were different (Clover had black "shark" eyes, the alien had "human like" eyes). And of course the alien's head didn't look like it was "breathing."

Then you have the way they moved. Clover was very slow and lumbering. When I saw the alien move, I was reminded of a spider.

My two cents but the movie was a lot better than expected!

I loved it! And I completely agree with the original poster, except one thing: this is clearly a Stephen Spielberg film that Mr. Abrams just happened to direct!

And that's a good thing. And I think it was on purpose, too: Abrams actually worked for Spielberg when Abrams was a teenager, during the eighties, restoring Spielberg's own homemade Super 8 movies. So this film was clearly a labor of love, and well done.

It got a little boring at parts. When the monster was actually shown it also became a little ridiculous. The first 30 minutes were great, and a lot of the dialogue was written very well. Also, the kids doing the bulk of the acting did a very good job. I'd give it a 7/10. Enjoyable summer flick.
