Sunflower Seeds in the park.

I just think it's funny to have directions on how to eat them.

I think if it's in the grass, it's ok. the shells will help fertilize the grass and birds use them for nesting and such.

On the sidewalk, is not ok. it just has to be swept up by someone else.

To me it's not the mater of if it's gross or not. (I don't think it is. its a shell not human waste) it's more a mater of causing someone else more work. Kinda the same as those who eat boiled peanuts. You have not problem throwing those shells to the ground. But someone has to clean them up if it's on the sidewalk.

Anyway. I think the main point is common courtesy (which is very lack in the world today)

Its easier to clean up the shells from the sidewalk, besides the shells appear to be toxic to grass and some plants (just look under your birdfeeder). So they are not to be used as fertilizer or mulch. They are also sharp, so birds will not use them for nesting material.

They are natural, and break down however, so are a heck of a lot less a problem than many of the other litter items we have to deal with.

One thing to remember with either of these seeds, is after the birds shell them to get at the seed, you'll be left with hulls under the feeder. Also it would be wise to know that sunflower seed hulls are toxic to grass and other plants, so think of that when you decide where you want to put your feeder. Remember to keep the feeder area clean by raking up the shells from time to time.

Let's bottom line this: Anything that came out of you shouldn't end up on the ground, whether or not it is easy to pick up. Find a trash can, use a cup, or just break the habit. It's just disrespectful and rude.

I agree....is it any less disgusting to just spit onto the ground? After all...the sun and the heat will cause most of it to evaporate after bit. It's still digusting.

If you're going to eat sunflower seeds and need to spit out the darn shells....carry a cup to spit them into.

I can't imagine eating the shell. I have a sunflower seed bird feeder in my yard, and even the birds don't eat the shell. There is such a thing as too much fiber.

So I guess anything that the vocal minority find "disgusting" or "rude" should be banished now. If there is no rule against spitting them on the ground, then so be it. But can we stop with trying to tell other people what they need to do because we may find it rude or disgusting. I am sure there are many things people find disgusting but don't try to impose their will on others...they simply move on and enjoy their life.

And no, I don't eat sunflower seeds, or smoke, or etc, etc.

I don't recall anyone telling others what they must do with the shells, just advising what they feel is appropriate.

No one has said that sunflower seeds must be banished, or that spitting the shells on the ground should be illegal.

Yes, I feel that spitting shells on the ground is 1.) gross 2.) shouldn't be done since the shells can just as easily be spit into a cup and thrown away.

No one was trying to impose anything on anyone else - maybe you should re-read the thread.

As far as vocal minority - I doubt people who think sunflower seeds should be spit into a cup rather than the ground at a public place are the "minority".

I enjoy life very much, thank you. Maybe you should try and do the same and not let a civil debate/discussion like we were having here upset you so much.

Hey, anyone who wants to be rude, it's their business I suppose. Wonderful example for children, though. And they wonder why kids act the way they do.

My daughter uses a cup--in the house. Is it okay to spit them on the ground at a sporting event? While you're playing? While you're watching?

Rude is relative here. Most seeders do not find it rude; most non-seeders do.

I have...we will have to agree to disagree then, because this is what I see...
There is no reason in the world why you can't get a cup and spit the shells into that instead of the ground

be respectful and get a cup!

Looks to be a whole lot of telling others what to do.

I am civil and happy...see:D :D :D I love happy places and all people as well...I just don't think it appropriate to tell others what they should do based on ones own opinion. That is all. See...still happy:D :D

I'm not trying to tell people what to do. I just think that people who spit in public areas in general have inferior manners. If people wish to spit seeds on the ground, go for it. However, those people need to understand that others percieve them that way. That perception is what makes this thread keep ticking. (And I don't even spit the seeds on the ground at a ballpark)

And I can understand and respect that. But I believe there is nothing wrong with spitting shells on the ground. And to be honest, do you think it really matters what someone they don't even know thinks about them?? I have little doubt the majority of people walking by someone enjoying seeds and spitting out the shells on the ground wouldn't even give them a second thought.
