I am just curious as to how many people who are offended at someone spitting sunflower seeds on the ground are themselves people who toss their cigarette butts out on the ground. :shrug:

Call me crazy, but, until today reading this thread, neither my husband or I have heard of spitting shells out! We both eat the whole seed and really like them that way. My opinion is that I think it is nasty to spit anything on the ground. I'm sure birds or squirrels will be along to take care of that, but why do it in the first place? I would spit them into a napkin or cup, that's just me.
I used to, until my appendix burst and I had 2 hrs to live when I got to the hospital. Dr. said they found sunflower seed shells and gum the cause for the burst.

See, I had never heard of eating the shell. That seems like it would have bad taste to me. I much prefer the sunflower seeds that are already un-shelled. That taste better and are easier to eat.
Um.. you confused me now. you don't like the shells but you want the seed that are un-shelled. :shrug:

Tell me about it! My school has some of the dumbest rules I've ever heard of! And you are right....it is all about power. It seems that they like to punish the entire school for something ONE student does. I've tried to fight it, but I am "just a teacher;" my opinion doesn't matter.

Let's bottom line this: Anything that came out of you shouldn't end up on the ground, whether or not it is easy to pick up. Find a trash can, use a cup, or just break the habit. It's just disrespectful and rude.

Sweet. So the recomended way of discarding the seeds is to actually spit them out....

Anyway - I don't care if every major league baseball player spits seeds all over the place, I still think it's gross and disrespectful to others. It's just as easy to spit into a cup, napkin etc...

I think one would have to assume that with a lack of a specific location to spit, that "just out" would be acceptable then and wherever the husk falls is ok.
I just think it's funny to have directions on how to eat them.
I think if it's in the grass, it's ok. the shells will help fertilize the grass and birds use them for nesting and such.
On the sidewalk, is not ok. it just has to be swept up by someone else.
To me it's not the mater of if it's gross or not. (I don't think it is. its a shell not human waste) it's more a mater of causing someone else more work. Kinda the same as those who eat boiled peanuts. You have not problem throwing those shells to the ground. But someone has to clean them up if it's on the sidewalk.
Anyway. I think the main point is common courtesy (which is very lack in the world today)
Yeah. my appendix burst on a Thursday morning. I under react to pain. so we didn't know until the next Monday when my mother took me to the ER. I was in the 6th grade.Makes you think about what you eat. :animwink:

Is this known as fact or merely speculation? I will have my people contact the manufacturers people for verification of where it is acceptable for the seeds to land.
