Sunflower Seeds in the park.

I'm not trying to tell people what to do. I just think that people who spit in public areas in general have inferior manners. If people wish to spit seeds on the ground, go for it. However, those people need to understand that others percieve them that way. That perception is what makes this thread keep ticking. (And I don't even spit the seeds on the ground at a ballpark)
And after 60 posts, I'm no closer to using a cup when I'm outdoors as you are to not using one.

Sticking with the ballpark scenario, I'd much rather spit my shells on the ground than have the non-seeder beside me drinking and spilling his beer and getting louder and more obnoxious by the second. It all boils down to "each his own".

What about people who shell peanuts or eat sunflower seeds without spitting them? Some people crack them with their teeth and then toss the shell on the ground.

Those custodial guys and ladies are there to keep things looking tidy. Back in the days before the designated smoking areas, Disney had no complaints with people dropping their cigarette butts on the street and stamping them out, leaving them for custodial to sweep up.

I'm not getting the big deal about spitting sunflower seed shells out as you walk around the park. Pick your battles or you just might have a heart attack over the little things in life, and for what?

I think we need to bring things into perspective here.

What has caused more global warming....spitting sunflower seeds or exhaling CO2? If we are going to chastise people for spitting their sunflower seeds....shouldnt we be admonishing people for exhaling?

We both eat the whole seed and really like them that way.
I also like to eat the entire seed for some reason, it's too much work to get the shell off. As for spitting on the ground, I think it is kind of inconsiderate, but if there's no rule against it, then I can't really say anything else.

I don't mind spitters. I just can't do it myself. It just feels dirty. Can't help not embarassing myself by doing it. It's the same as having punk hair or multiple percings. To each their own. No big deal if you do, just not me. I do like cans the best. I know when I fill a can that I better stop.

As I said before - I used to smoke, then used chewing tobacco, then used sunflower seeds. I don't like cigarette butts on the ground, or chewing tobacco, or sunflower seed shells. Therefore I used to dispose of mine in what I consider to be the proper manner. I would not want these items thrown all over in my yard, or at my home and therefore I never threw them on the ground at someone else's property.

I don't think anyone is making a big deal out of this - the OP asked a question and people responded to it. This isn't a battle that I am fighting, if I saw someone spitting shells at WDW I most likely wouldn't think twice about it. I would be on vacation and would be there to have a good time.

I guess I'm just wondering where people draw the line between littering and acceptable things to throw onto the ground. If I was at WDW and threw my tissues, napkins etc... on the ground would that be littering or OK? After all it is peoples job to sweep them up, and even if they weren't swept up the first big rain would basically deteriorate them. Is that acceptable to do?

Like I said before - I do not want tissues, cigarrette butts, tobacco, paper, candy wrappers, or sunflower seeds on my property and therefore I do not throw them on other people's property. I think that it is simply a matter of respect. Obviously others here feel different and that is fine - if we all agreed on everything we would have some pretty boring conversations.

If it weren't for the clarty gits and habitual flobbers there would be fewer custodial jobs. So I guess they are just being philanthropic.

Could be worse it couldbe oyster getting hocked up.

Its easier to clean up the shells from the sidewalk, besides the shells appear to be toxic to grass and some plants (just look under your birdfeeder). So they are not to be used as fertilizer or mulch. They are also sharp, so birds will not use them for nesting material.

I beg to differ. I use them as mulch/fertilizer in my flower beds and it does a wonderful job...that is if the birds would stop gathering it fir their nest. there are about 5 bird nest in our trees made with the use of sunflower seed shells.

Lets look at it this way. How often do you see a CM sweeping up popcorn in the parks? So why not spit shells? As quoted here:
the sun and the heat will cause most of it to evaporate after bit.

So then your just left with a dry shell that can be swept up, or the wind will blow in the the grass, or the rain will wash away.
