Hey so my best friend and I are going to New York City for my birthday and we have a couple of things planned to do but I really need help on some suggestions of fun things to do there. Any advice for fun stuff to do and any good restaurants for dinner is greatly appreciated! :)

Also, so this thread isn't just useless after suggestions are given anyone can use this to ask people for suggestions of things to do anywhere else. Thanks guys!

See a show! There are some great shows on Broadway right now. Stop by the TKTS book in the middle of Times Square to get some good tickets at half price.

Yeah, I thought that was a great idea! I'm pretty sure we're going to see Wicked and the ticket place in Times Square sounds like a good idea too! We also heard about a candy shop that's owned by Ralph Lauren's daughter and we were thinking about that too. Thanks for your advice!

I don't know if they'll have Wicked tickets at the TKTS booth, but it's definitely worth checking out. They have a huge sign with all the ticket offerings that day, so it won't be hard to find a good deal, it will just be hard to narrow it down

Also, the Disney store is pretty cool, and Central Park is worth checking out. Walking around and seeing all the places where they filmed the "That's How You Know" scene from Enchanted is fun.

And if you're a museum junkie (which I am), there are all sorts of museums there that don't cost anything but a donation to visit.

Basically, it's nice to just hit up all the famous sites: Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Grand Central Station, the NY Public Library, etc. A lot of them are all within walking distance of each other. I would start at Times Square and work your way out from there. I did this same exact NYC in a day tour back in April, and it was fun, be be prepared to get exhausted.

^ Disney Store's closed now (sad face...) They're building a new one in Times Square.

Yeah, hit up the famous spots, do Madame Tussade's, go into the GIANT Toys R Us (even if you're not buying anything, the giant ferris wheel and the AA T Rex are worth it), try out the museums (especially Natural History), and YES, see a show. Wicked, Phantom, Next to Normal (all 3 tear-inducing), Lion King, Mary Poppins... they're all so good.

Dylan's Candy Bar on 3rd!

My husband and I took a special Christmas overnight in NYC and ate dinner at a little cafe across the street. It looked so yummy inside but unfortunately it was closed. Also on the same street is Serendipity 3...I am a HUGE fan of the movie and I was obsessed with going inside and trying to frozen hot chocolate, but there was 2 hr wait and that was at 10pm. I'd make reservations a few days before if you want to try it out.

Have you thought about ice skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park? It's quite picturesque. Have fun!

Maybe it is me but I like to eat things that are unique to that city. Fancy restaurants are a dime a dozen so I would suggest a number of things. N.Y. Pizza for starters. N.Y. also has some of the best street food, hot dogs, chestnuts, pretzels, falafel, souvlaki, etc. Go to a real bakery that makes fresh bread and have a bagel. Go to the Carnegie Deli and get a pastrami sandwich that is to die for. Go to China town for dinner then walk over to little Italy for a home made cannoli. If you do want a nice dinner for your birthday I would suggest any restaurant in little Italy. :slurp: Have fun.

How long is "for your birthday" ?

A day? Overnight? a weekend? more?

That is going to make a big difference in what you do. If you are only going for a day, and you want to see a show, then you are going to stay in the Times Square area - unless you want to do some subway/taxi work.

As far as places to eat, they change very quickly. Sure there are some big name ones - I think Mesa Grill was mentioned. that stay for years. But there are also a lot of good places that close after a year (NYC is a rough place to open a restaruant). Of course there is also the local and street food - Payapa King, King Papaya, International Soup Kitchen (aka Soup Nazi from Sienfield), Carnegie Deli, dirty water dogs, pretzels heated over charcoal, honey roasted coconut, etc.

Times square is amazing if you haven't been there. Plenty of places to eat/see.

One show I would recommend is Lion King. I've seen it a few times and love it each time.

Of course go see all the sites there are as some one above me suggested. Also if you walk up and down 5th Ave there's plenty of unique bakeries/restaurants/shops.

Also if you are into sports at all go to Madison Square Garden, or if they are having a concert there that weekend or something. Seeing an event at MSG is like no other.

Or take the LIRR to visit me 20 mins. away:ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

Statue of Liberty is a must. One of the most awe inspiring and patriotic symbols of our Country. Empire State Building, too.

Unfortunately, they're very far apart, and the Statue of Liberty takes quite a while to do.

I would say that if you're trying to fit as much NYC into a one-day trip as possible, maybe save the SoL for another trip.

Well worth it, though, and you can do the Statue and some midtown things in one day with proper planning....I have.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your shared experiences also, it's much easier to make my decision when I hear that it's been done before!
