Gee, I forgot we're just bumpkins down here in Memphis. What qualifies as "the city"? And granted, the finest meal we've had on property was the CG, but I would hardly call that steak above any other steak I've had. Actually, the steak I've had at Texas Roadhouse was just as good if not better as well as cheaper. Dressing the plate up all fancy like(bumpkin talk) doesn't make the food any better.

I do not think he meant it to sound rude. He meant NYC where everything is just more expensive. That is a fact, living in the suburbs of or actually in a major city will be systematically more expensive. Therefore he is saying that the price he pays for food where he lives is relative to the prices he pays at Disney so therefore he is not surprised by it.

Depending on where you live in the U.S. the cost of living will be very different. That is all he was saying.

Onto tipping, if you are trying to get an idea of what different people do we also tip 20% or more but I agree 15 to 20% is standard IMO. When a person does not tip a server or under tips a server, they not only lose money by serving you but they could have had someone at their table that would have either tipped the suggested amount or more. You are within your right to tip whatever you please but it does not make it the right thing to do (sorry I just reread that and it is not how I meant it to sound) What I mean is it is not the best thing for the person serving you but that is the nature of working in restaurants, sometimes you get great tips other times not so much, life goes on.

Yes, and according to everyone here, tips are based on service. So, if I'm getting the same service then why the bigger tip? And I already covered the difference in atmosphere. You know who the waiters should be mad at, Disney. Disney is the one that jacked up food prices, which in turn makes the "suggested tip" bigger. I never told the server that I was a walking money bag, Disney did.

And Memphis is a craphole, but I'm from Los Angeles.

Well I am from New York so L.A. is, well I wont get into that.:)

And no they did not jack up prices as I already covered as well.

If you had the same service at CG that you did at Texas Roadhouse, then you got a bad server.

Well, then perhaps they should blame Disney for Free Dining. I doubt people are like "oh great, it's free dining so now I can toss out $20's like toilet paper!"

We've made 4 trips, 2 on site and 2 off site. Free Dining isn't a deal breaker to me. If I have to eat off site and lose EMH, then it's no sweat off my back.

The service was great at the CG. He even brought us 2 free glasses of champagne for our anniversary. It's not like I tossed him 3 dollars or something.

Now you are on to something.

All I am saying is put yourself in the servers shoes. He was probably thinking that you would take care of him since he gave you free champagne and all. They work in a job where the norm, expected, or whatever you want to call it is 15-20%. Maybe it is an imperfect system but it is what we have.

I tipped him sufficiently. Although I know he didn't expect a ton because 1)we had our two kids with us and 2) we weren't in a suit/dress. I am happy to say that we wore comfortable pants with polo shirts. In that heat they're not getting me in anything more.

I believe this is where we are disagreeing. I can guarantee you that if it was not 15-20% he did not think it was sufficient.

I cannot say for sure but a server that works full time at a restaurant with those prices will generally make about $750-$1000 a week. I would think a little more at CG since it is always pretty busy but who Knows? They may get less since it is a tourist spot.

Yeah, if that were to hold true then I would withdraw any sympathy or guilt. Of course I'd also like to get information on their union dues and a good idea of what they take home per month.
