UPDATE: more dino detail
more about our DINO adventure. . .
we made it about 1/4 of the way through, bouncing along up and down, and I was already scared! But all of a sudden, we were about to pass these two little guys that look like pterodactyls with huge long teeth, and the car lowered down flat and suddenly quit moving. Then all the work lights came on. The sounds were still running and the dinosaurs were still moving, but all the lights were on and all the dressings on the walls were much more obvious. If you've ever been on the ride you know it's normally pretty dark. Now we could see all these ladders and pipes and the black walls and other set pieces. But unlike on Haunted Mansion when you occasionally pause in your Doom Buggies, and the Ghost Host says you'll be moving again in a few moments and to stay seated. . . nobody said anything. No announcements, nothing. We sat there, Ryland and I and six other guests including three little girls who were already scared to death. Then the dinosaur and environmental sounds shut off. The dinosaurs were still moving but no sounds. So we sat and sat. It was five minutes of us sitting there confused before an announcement was made that due to technical difficulties our adventure would have to end here for today, and that someone would be there to assist us shortly (you may be able to hear this in the previously posted video). Finally, two CMs came through a door in the wall, and for a moment we thought they were going to leave us because they headed the other way, but they changed their minds. The male CM had a rolling ladder. Finally, they came with the ladder and let us out of the car and told us to get in a single file line as close to the bushes as we could get. The female CM was very helpful and calming and explained everything as we went as much as she could without saying too much. I think she realized the little girls were pretty freaked out.
We walked along the whoooole rest of the track, a long way, about 3/4 of the ride length. We saw everything in the light and how it all works. We came up to the big scary dinosaur and she said "this is our (whatever)osaur, he would have chased you. . ." and "this is our nice dinosaur, the (whatever)osaur, he would have saved you from the scary guy." A lot of the stuff looks really weird. Like I said, we had never ridden this ride before so we were a little disappointed to see how everything works because we hear the ride is really cool. There was a part with these little rubbery dinosaurs that look like they might run over the top of the car, or something. . . I don't know. They were attached to an awfully huge contraption for such tiny dinosaurs to make them do whatever it is they do. It was this huge thing with long arms, some kind of hydraulic movement.
We picked up two more cars full of guests along the way. The lady CM explained that we had to stay all the way to the right because there was black oily stuff on the floor under where the cars travel and that it would get all over us if we stepped on it. There really is no track like I would have imagined it, just an open slit in the middle of the floor-road bit, that the car is attached to through it. I hear this ride has had a lot of problems with the cars, and we had heard that there was a fire on it recently. Ryland asked if there was another fire, but they said no.
We walked along the track and there was stuff everywhere! We came upon a whole backpack full of things that belong to some guest. I guess it's common for things to fly out of the cars. HANG ONTO YOUR STUFF ON DINOSAUR! I was astonished how much stuff was out there: sunglasses, hats, bottles, that backpack. As we came around one corner the lady CM said "This is where we lose most of our stuff, we get a lot of guests coming to us to claim things" I guess it's a particularly sharp turn at that point. A lot of the track was not easy to walk because there are a couple of STEEP drops that we had to ease our way down and back up. One of the other cars we stopped to free the trapped guests had stopped right in front of the big scary dinosaur that lunges over the car. I'm glad I wasn't stuck next to him all that time!
This was quite an adventure. It was all very interesting, but I wish I had gotten to ride it once without seeing how everything works or how it ends. I won't spoil the ending for you if you haven't been on it, but it TOTALLY ruined the surprising ending for me. I was most discouraged about that.
All in all, though, it was really pretty interesting. We were given re-entry passes that are good for two guests until March 26th, which is good because we'll probably be back up between now and then. They said they may not be able to reopen the ride again that day, depending upon what the problem was.
Crazy, huh? What a day on Dinosaur!
