Stroller - Bring or Rent?

We have a 2 1/2 year old we're taking to Disney at the end of May, and we're flying from Cleveland. Should we bring our own stroller, or rent the ones they have at the parks? Is it relatively easy to bring them on planes these days if we go that route?

Thanks,
Jen

I agree with letting them sleep in the stroller in the park rather than taking them back to the resort. My son had no problems sleeping in his stroller. I don't have a large one but I made sure it did lay down for naps. There are plenty of nice smaller strollers that lay down and have baskets.

As for getting hit with one, I've been both hit and have hit people. I always say I'm sorry if I hit someone. Sometimes it's not my fault I've run into someone. Most times it's the fault of the other person for either walking in front of me or not paying attention to where they are going and whats around them. People without strollers don't always let you through either. I got seperated from my party several times because of this. I would say excuse me and they wouldn't more. Then I hit them on purpose! :goodnevil :ROFLOL:

One point I want to make before I get to the main topic...Please do not judge all people that have an "older" child in a stroller. My son is autisitc and 3 1/2. He needs that stoller for when he is tired of walking, To just relax and "tune out" all that is going around him. If an older child is in a stroller, there might just be a legitamate reason. Try not top judge these parents too harshly. We are just trying to have a nice vacation the same as you are.

Anyway...I find the ones at WDW uncomfortable and big. The do not recline, etc. I brought my own Peg umbrella stroller, large enough for a bigger kid and reclined. Also easy enough to get on and off a tram (we drove) and the parking lot. Also it was nice to have it for the resort to take a long walk. I prefer to bring my own, but if you decide to rent, bring a blanket or towel for them to get a little more comfortable in one. Enjoy your vacation!

Well said! :sohappy: My neighbor's son is also autistic. He needs a place to just chill out too.

As for the nap in the stroller, I think again that depends on the kid. My daughter is the type that she fights sleep as much as possible and any sort of distractions keep her awake. After the first couple of days where she wouldn't nap, we scheduled a break each day that we took her back to the resort for pool time and a nap and it worked great. She was able to stay up late for the fireworks, Fantasmic, etc. and we didn't have a crabby unruly child on our hands. The only time she fell asleep in her stroller was on the eighth day, in the evening, the night before we flew home...

Personally, I also found the breaks helpful... I'd be lying if I said that I didn't nap some too...:animwink:

I highly recommend the umbrella stroller route. The rental of WDW strollers can get really expensive for a week long trip. Another option would be to buy one at the local Walmart in Orlando for the $15 it costs. Sell it to someone on site, waiting in the stroller rental line, for $5 and get 1/3 of your money back, plus only $10 for the use of your stroller for a week.

If you bring your own, it makes getting through the airport easier than having your child walk or you carry them along with handling whatever carryon items you have.

Luckily my kids are old enough to go without strollers now when we do WDW. My 4 yr old did nine days of WDW this past Jan...quite a trooper...and very tired at the end of a day.

The non-kid people should watch where they are going and not step right in front of someone with a stroller and expect the person to stop in a milli-second because the person was too impatient to just wait for me to pass, just as some stroller drivers need to be patient with non kid people. Or the people that stand there even though you say excuse me a million times, because they are waiting in a line that is out into the middle of the sidewalk when there is plenty of room to the side for the line to be roping around. They can simply move back so you can actually walk where you are suppose to. As a mom with an infant I don't seek out people to try and run over. Many times it's the non-kid people that are the ones that are causing themselves to be run over because they don't pay attention, it's like for some their brain and common sense goes on vacation while they are on vacation.

Amen to that!!!:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy: We had more people walk right in front of us and just all of a sudden stop on this last trip. I move fast with the stroller, right along with the pace of the crowd. When someone gets impatient and walks around me, and then stops to dig into their bag or stop right in the middle of the walk way, they risk getting run over. I have more problems with someone stopping right in the middle of a crowded walkway than I do anything else, stroller or no stroller. There is no way for a stroller to stop instantly. I can't predict when someone in front of me is going to stop. Sorry for the rant, just venting from the recent trip. I didn't let it bother me. I think its kinda funny when someone gets in front of me and then comes to a dead stop when I am pushing the stroller at the pace I move. You are just asking to be hit with the stroller when you do that.

Personally, I say rent the stroller. It is so much easier than lugging a huge stroller on and off a bus, especially a crowded one. When you take your own big one, you risk hitting everyone on the bus with the stroller as you walk past them. The buses are packed tight, like a can of sardines, and there isn't much room for a huge stroller. I saw one couple with 3 kids and the biggest stroller I've ever seen. It would be a limo stroller. They were arguing over how they were going to get the 3 kids, 2 of them sleeping, and the stroller onto the bus at the close of the MK. They had no idea how they were going to manage it. We found that the rentals are very convient and so much easier to deal with. If you insist on taking your own, use an umbrella one. Its easier to deal with on and off the buses. The bigger ones are just a hassel. My son takes his naps back at the room. Its so much easier for everyone to get a quick break, freshen up and reenergize for the evening. You know your children best. If yours will wake up after sleeping in a stroller and be fine, do it. Mine won't. he would be too cranky so we take ours back at the room. There is no right or wrong and I would not worry about all the stroller haters out there. When they have children of their own and push one through MK at closing, they will have a completely different perspective. Do whats right for your kids and you'll be fine!!!

All I ever asked was "whatever you bring please be careful". And now I keep reading that basically every time I have been hit by an out of control stroller or AV has been my fault. Hmmm.:drevil:

I will try to be more careful next time; and still bring the usual number of bandaids.

Its not your fault everytime, but you do have to take some responsability for it. Its not always the stroller's fault. Next time you go, push a stroller through a thick crowd and see what it is like on the other side. There is fault on both sides. There are some people who use their strollers as people pushers, but there are also some people who don't realize that you can't just come to a complete stop right in front of a person with a stroller and expected them to stop immediately. It doesn't work that way. When I use the stroller, I make sure I am careful not to hit people. I ask the same of those who don't use one. Please make sure you don't come to a stop right in front of a stroller. Let's just have some common courtsey and realize everyone shares in this issue. Its not just those who have a stroller's fault. It can be your fault as well.

I actually did not bring a stroller on my last trip. I found that if your trip is longer than 4 days at the park it's cheapers to purchase a stroller inside the park than to rent. The black and red stroller (purchased at MK) was $40. I believe renting a stroller is $10 a day.

Well, my children have finally out grown the stroller but I always took my own because the ones that you rent do not look as comfortable. It was nice to put them into the stroller from the room to the bus and from the bus into the park so if you rented one, this option was out. I always had one that would recline for naps if they fell asleep in the park. We never changed our plans for "nap time" but we did take a break in the late afternoons to regroup and get ready for the night. We still do this on our trips now. :)

Have a great trip!
