Storm Questions

This is my first time traveling to Florida with the potential for a serious storm.

My arrival date is Tuesday, August 6.

I’m flying in from New York, with an expected landing at 12 noon.

My first question: The storm is expected to be in Georgia/South Carolina at the time. In your experience, would MCO still have incoming flights?

My second question is: If my flight is delayed by a day or so, and I notify Disney, will they hold my reservation for a day?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide. This is a serious concern, and some experienced voices would be helpful.

MCO will be open by the 6th, this is a tropical storm and while it might produce a tornado the airport can handle it.

Yes. But will a flight from NY be able to make it in?
In general they will simply reroute to avoid the worst of the turbulence. A tropical storm in the Carolinas is not going to shut down all East coast air traffic. If it does delay you, I think you should call the hotel and let them know you are coming (and check-in online) so they don’t cancel.

If you are nervous about the storm, you could ask your airline if they will move you to a connection at ORD/ATL/HOU…but that’s a lot of extra travel time and hassle.

Thanks for this. It’s pretty reassuring, although I remain very cautiously optimistic.

One should surely check to see if the rental car, hotel room are still there for them prior to flying to MCO. When many are stuck trying to fly out on time to get to FL , many still in Orlando Kissimmee are stuck so they may not leave check out of the hotel, continue to use their rental cars etc. Airports will be a madhouse so don't count on trying to eat there. When calling different places the hold time will be long.

Are they currently expecting that degree of disruption in Orlando?

If flights are delayed/ cancelled we've learned guests tend to keep their rental cars longer and extend their stay in hotels making it a nightmare for some trying to check in when the guests supposed to check out will not.

Not really.
Disruption is also when a number of MCO staff call sick and don't go to work . When there are serious rain events, MCO, hotels, air and car travel,
employee staffing like tropical storms, it is not if disruptions will happen rather it is how much. One time we could not check into our room in the afternoon because hotel staffing was at minimum and rooms could not be cleaned in a timely manner because guests did not check out by check out time and lack of housekeepers to clean rooms for incoming guests.

Not at all. It’s just fear mongering that will give the original poster unnecessary anxiety.

People who are planning to drive to or from Orlando in the next couple of days should consider altering their plans, but it’s currently unlikely that the airport will be closed.
No one said the airport will be closed but it will be a lot of delays, planes, some roads flooded , etc . It’s not fear monger it is prepare for the worst because if you haven’t live through one you won’t understand. That plane that leaves NY that the poster is taking to MCO is coming from somewhere so one can’t overlook if that plane will be delayed flying to JFK . I’d say get to the airport several hours early.

Orlando isnt even in the direct path of the storm. Plus if you read the OP, he's arriving Tuesday. The storm will more than likely be heading into South Carolina by then.

It is definitely always necessary to prepare for unexpected events! Pack your things for 7 days in advance, especially in such weather!

Orlando will get lots of rain and delays etc through the counties. You apparently don’t understand direct path or not areas will be affected with not normal weather patterns. Rain all week in Orlando.

Yeah, the outer bands that are coming in tonight. Also it's Florida in the summer, there's ALWAYS a chance of rain seeing that you know, it's a tropical climate. Apparently you don't understand that. I dont even live in Florida and I know that.

OP will be fine barring any last minute setbacks.

Because it’s just fear mongering.

The weather service forecasts for the next few days and nights at MCO are similar, focused on a chance of showers and possible thunderstorms. Not even a full inch of rain expected for a single day or night.
