Stop being scared of RAIN!!

The best solution for the rain...an umbrella. Genius, right? In real downpours we find someplace to hide ourselves. Last August we were in DHS and it started really raining. A clear-out-the-park type rain with lightning everywhere, the kind that can become dangerous. We were over by Star Tours. We just made a dash for it in between the gift shop and the entrance and rode it five times with no wait.

And of course, at the end of the storm, there was no wait for Star Tours, Tower of Terror, or Rock 'n Roller Coaster...and Toy Story Mania had a two hour waito_O . Typical:rolleyes:

We love the rain! We went in May 2009 and it rained the entire trip. We had a blast!! We walked on rides and my DH figured out that if you went into City Hall and asked for characters, they'd come out from the back room where they hid when it was raining. My DD (3 1/2 at the time) spent like an hour playing with Pluto and Chip and Dale. They played games with her and we just had the best time (pictures below). We were nervous they wouldn't do Spectromagic, but the rain let up just in time for the parade to go on and it was the most magical evening we've ever had - Snow White was walking on the opposite side of main street when she saw my daughter sitting on the curb in front of The Confectionery. She said "OHHHHH! You are so adorable" walked straight to my daughter and planted a big kiss on her forehead. I have a picture of it, but it's not on this computer - bummer! Anyway, long story short, magical things happen during rainy vacations at WDW :)

The last 2 trips were in June and both times our AK day had gotten rainfall at about 3pm. It was just enough to cancel MJJP, which upset me greatly because it is my favorite parade. In fact this past year, it started raining and didn't stop until a little bit before closing. We just mounted up with our poncho's and trekked through the rain. We were able to go and watch Finding Nemo, which took a good hour. We were pretty cold in there, but the show made it better. Then we went to Dinosaur and were able to walk on several times in a row. We also just walked around the park and there wasn't but a few people left. It was really cool. They did open EE within the last 30 minutes of the day, so I was able to go and do that 4 times in a row to end the day. Then we went to the beach for a few days and on the day we were leaving and back in Orlando, the front end of a hurricane was moving in and it started pouring at noon and didn't stop. We went to DTD and just walked about in the rain when we needed to. Basically you can let the rain interfere with your day or ignore it and move on.
Last June, it was Hurricane Deby. We got there the day she made landfall. It rained twenty-four hours a day for several days. We put on our Coleman rain suits and beach shoes and had the best trip ever. We were dry and could ride everything, except the few that shut down in the rain, as many times as we wanted. It was great. We went back, when it finally stopped raining, and rode the rides that had been closed the other days. We knew in advance that Deby was on the way, but we had to go then or not at all. We were well prepared. We took rainsuits, ponchos, extra shoes and 2 gallon ziplock bags for backpacks/purses etc. We didn't put our backpacks on under the rainjacket until past security, since they required you to take them off your body to be checked. Some days I wore my clear/water-resistant backpack, so I didn't have to put it under the jacket or open it to be checked.
Rain can be your friend if you are prepared.

We had something similar happen a few years ago. There weren't any hurricanes, but it was just gray, cloudy and horrible pool weather in August. It rained a lot. We took our umbrellas and headed out to the parks. The good thing was no one wanted to be outside, so there were minimal crowds. Some people go back to their rooms when it rains. I can see this in Disneyland because everything is outdoors (of course, it's also in the desert). But in WDW, so much is outside that there's absolutely no reason to skip simply because of rain. Just be prepared and enjoy the parks when some people chicken out.

I've said/posted this before on another thread, but I have little places I duck into if the rains come and we aren't willing (I should say, the kid isn't willing) to do the poncho tour of Disney.

This is one of them (and if I run into other forum people here, I'll know whom to blame!)

It's a nice area, because I can duck out and get us refreshments from the food stand nearby, and we can wait for MK to drain (only park I can think of that actually floods for a bit in places during a hard rain)...

WE visited in the middle of May a few years ago and got stuck in the worst downpour I have ever experienced. We were on Main Street right by Casey's waiting for Wishes to start. The SECOND the show started the skies opened up and the flood came down. It was raining so hard you couldn't even see the fireworks. All those people and pretty much nowhere to go. The gutters and downspouts couldn't keep up - it was like a waterfall spewing out of them. In about 5 minutes the sewers couldn't keep up either and Main Street became a tiny river.

We finally made our way out of the park - only to find that the outer courtyard had pretty much flooded. We had to wade through water that was about a foot high - it came up to your shins.

And being soaked to the bone while on an air conditioned bus is NOT a fun ride back to your resort.

We didn't have a hurricane last year. I think that poster meant to say it was raining, the remnants of what had been a hurricane.

We were not hit hard by that. It was a non-event here, IMO. Just a couple rainy days. We had worse storms late last summer.

I thought not, but I'm too exhausted to correct. I figured that's what the poster meant. We had similar remnants from Katrina if I recall correctly (I was only 10 at the time). I'm sure being from Florida you've definitely seen worse. I went through Charlie, although it wasn't that bad. They showed Monsters: Inc in the room.

Well, they were calling it a hurricane. It was wild enough for me. Windy and hard rain. I guess you guys are used to that kind of weather. Orlando supposedly got the outer edge. It had just come ashore on the coast, well what was left of it I guess from what you guys say-- and I know you are accurate with your posts--when we got there. It rained solidly for three days and off and on for two more then it was beautiful our last couple of days.
Whatever it was, it supplied us with a great trip with very low crowds :D.

Rain has never ruined any one of our trips. I love it. We slap the ponchos on and truck along...
SOUNDS LIKE MY FAMILY, TOO. BEING FROM LOUISIANA YOU CANNOT RUN FROM RAIN (AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT COMES WITH IT). We just never go out in the downpours or lightning. When we go in the last week of May, we have had at least one rain shower per day but it is not a bad storm, just a shower or two. Just to cool everything off a little.

I love the rain. Even more, I love to be in the rain at Disney World! It's not something I do anymore because I am not a kid anymore, but when I'm at Disney World I am a kid, so I like to play and have fun like I would have when I was younger. Carefree and full of joy :) PLUS, it's just an excuse to go shopping for Disney gear later to get into some dry clothes ;)
That's the way we look at things. We'll stay out of the lightening and the worst downpours but anything else... why not be a kid again? Laugh, maybe splash in a puddle or two and watch the park clear out so that we don't have to wait as long.

Rain. Pish. What's a few rain drops gonna do? I haven't melted yet... ;)

In all seriousness, like most people on here, I love it when it rains. It clears the parks a bit, and I don't mind getting a bit wet, so I usually even forego a poncho unless it is a huge downpour. It surprises me so much when I see people running for the exits. The rain doesn't usually last that long.

@luv... I kind of get yor concern about the lightening but only kind of. Not all rain storms are associated with thunder/lightening. And the likelihood you'll get struck is minimal. Heck, you can actually technically get struck by lightening on even sunny days. Less likely? Yes. But lightening strikes happen all the time even without the presence of a thunderstorm. Ground always has electrical charge after all. So should we always stay inside? But again, it's such a minimal risk. Now, would I go out and walk around when it is really really storming with constant lightening? No. That's stupid. But rain storms dot intimidate me, especially in Florida where they are just a constant part of life. But obviously, if it makes you more comfortable, that is what you have to do.

We had several tropical storms but no hurricanes and certainly no direct impacts.
