Just marketing
Hey,
All it is, is clever product placement. Stitch did well, and in my opinion the most successful animated feature to come out of all the recents. More and more people are warming to him, he has even, dare I say it, come to be a sort of 'Mickey' figure without the round ears, tux, and the girlfriend (and of course the fame).
The replacement of Stitch over Alien, is just a refurb, but introducing newer technology and a character that has been incredibly popular thus far, so they are just honouring him with his own attraction. Just like Pooh breaking into Toad's wild ride, however albeit, that was after some years.
Alien was adulty, and the fun families will remember from watching Lilo&Stitch will bring these families together in the ride with the last 'really' memorible Disney character.
Who wants that horrible alien back anyway, just so long as skippy gets to make his appearance - I am happy!
Incidently, there are rumours that on the launch of the attraction, Stitch is going to make some suprise appearances in other attractions, with a sort of 'Keep your eye out for Stitch' campaign. For instance he may pop up randomly in the Snow White or POTC for example.
For a certainty, Disney will bring in more revenue by the change of this ride, through sales of merchandise, and increase sales of the movie, both now and in the future.
