Star Wars: Rogue One

So for those of us that haven't read books or watched any of the Rebels stuff... Can it stand on it's own without that prior knowledge?
Collider has three five minute videos on YouTube that might be worth checking out.

Star Wars: What to Know Before Seeing Rogue One
Rogue One: What Are Kyber Crystals?
Star Wars Rogue One: Origins of the Rebellion

It could, but there are a lot of moments that will make people that have seen all of the movies squee with delight.
I have so much hype for GMWT.

Something that I'm a little surprised about is that every other article seems to be saying that this is the darkest movie since Empire.

Really?

Are we just going to forget about all of the younglings that were slaughtered in Revenge of the Sith, or...?

Yes, many died in RotS. And if Lucas had done anything as a writer or director to make us give a crap about any of the characters, those deaths would have had impact.

I would at least watch the original Star Wars movie, Episode 4:A new Hope.
We did just watch that in preparation of tonight. We have seen the regular 7, just not the tv shows..not enough to have an in depth understanding.

I have attached the videos that @CaptainAmerica referred to. They go past the movies for a little more knowledge.

I am so excited to see this tonight!!!!!!!! :joyfull:

Not comparable.... the younglings are not shown being killed... this one is a lot more in your face and shoes even more desperation and fear.

December is my busiest month of the year..I was here until 6:45 last night. 8pm on Monday and a few nights last week.. Have to afford an elitist lifestyle somehow... Is it normal for the "Elite" to work well into the evenings? ;)

So are you saying the IMAX 3D will be more intense? Should I just see if I can get tickets to a normal showing?
Yes. It's pretty much that Jyn's father gets taken away to continue work on the Death Star.
Ok good.

Rogue One is a really fun Star Wars movie.

I don't know what was adjusted during re-shoots, but it almost feels like two movies connected together. Most of it feels a little different than your typical Star Wars fare, but the last 30 minutes or so is pretty much a Star Wars fans wet dream with spectacular action and lots of fan service.

Alan Tudyk's K-2SO is a scene stealer and sure to be an instant fan favourite.

The movie did, however, feel inconsequential to the Star Wars saga. Other than learning a bit about how the Death Star came to be, there aren't any significant story or character developments that mean anything to me. I haven't kept up with Rebels or any of the books, so those who have might get a bit more out of it.

I think it gave more gravity to the need to get the Death Star plans to the Rebels. In EpIV you just see Leia insert the plans into Artoo then there's a lot of running around and staying one step ahead until the Falcon finally leaves the Death Star for Yavin IV. With this movie, you have a sense that the plans actually mean life and death. Just like the Bothans and Death Star II, many people died to get the info on Death Star I into the hands of the Rebels. Now, at the start of EpIV, you feel more invested in the Blockade Runner's mission.

Yeah, I can see that, particularly for any future viewers who watch this movie before they see A New Hope.

For us current viewers however, we are well aware what the Death Star is and how important those plans are. A prequel will always be less compelling because it's telling us stuff we already know.

And one of my main gripes with the story

in a new hope it's like the plans are a rumor... and they have been searching for this smuggled info...

Yet here it's clear as day they have the info... there is no need to hide that the info exists...
Why can't the fleet relay the info to someone after they get it via transmission? The size of the data is the only constraint they talk about.
Vader comes in and in no time wipes the rebel fleet... hundreds of ships down to one... the battle is over and they have no sort of perimeter or other ships that can prevent leia's ship from leaving?
The empire nukes their own, supposedly single site archive to try to stop this info leak... what is the consequence of that loss verse the plans for the battle station?

In a new hope there is all this talk about finishing the battle station and no one really knowing of its existence and power... yet here they devalue that by using the Death Star. Yes it's city power verse planet killer power... but the cat is out of the bag. The Death Star is shown as operational and the rebels and the galaxy would know about it

And how long is is this trip smuggling Leia and r2?? verse where rogue one stops and when new hope starts? Why wouldn't leia just hyperspace jump right to yavin4 or a friendly port? This whole "running with known goods" seems a huge departure from the smuggling/sneaking around story from new hope

I haven't seen Rogue One yet, but...

...the sneaking around part isn't about the Death Star plans, it's about Obi-Wan Kenobi.

I also think you're overestimating the capabilities of the Rebellion. They aren't able to communicate with one another openly to pass around information.

I haven't seen Rogue One yet, but...

They are in direct contact with the rebels on the planet.. and the fleet above the planet..

And as for sneaking.. they literally watch the ship leave.. there would be no 'diplomatic mission' cover as Leia tries to play at the start of a new hope

That's a good point. I suppose one could argue that Leia was not aware that Vadar witnessed the whole thing and felt her story might fly.

Ultimately, this seems like a case of sacrificing plot consistency for the flashy ending.

Just please tell me this film doesn't achieve a darker tone by over-using jump scares. Those are (imo) cheap, lazy, cliched, and distract from the overall mood at hand.

Luckily SW films in the past haven't relied too heavily on these types of cheap shots to create thrills/scares. The only bad one that really comes to mind is the assassination attempt on Queen Amidala's ship at the very start of Ep. 2. But that was sorta necessary to throw one in there, as it was crucial to the story. Yet it still took the audience out of it for a few minutes after.

What was she supposed to do? Just say "Ya got me. I stuck the plans in a droid. The thing has to be around here somewhere, but you remember how R2 is dad. He never does what you tell him to."

She did what every other "spy" would do. Lie their @$$ off and buy time for R2 to find Obi-Wan. The Tantive IV was a very common CR90 Corvette so it is quite conceivable that she hoped she could play off the "Really? Me driving a white 4 door sedan is the only reason you have for pulling me over?" angle.

I don't think there is a single jump scare in the entire movie.

You know, I had to think about why I knew about Kyber Crystals, and it's because of "Ani: A Parody", a Star Wars musical that I like. :hilarious:Because I'm not remembering them coming up in any of the movies.

I watched A New Hope again on Monday, so fingers crossed that I won't be confused. My mom, on the other hand, who likes Star Wars but isn't as obsessed as my dad and I are.... Well... Tonight should be interesting for her (she also doesn't handle violent movies that well).
