This is excatly what we did on day one... we just pulled over to the side of the road like everyone else. The next day we came closer to 9:15 and there were already hundreds of cars.
It has varied. On some days Orange County sheriffs have been there preventing anyone parking at the side of the road. Disney security has also been routinely turning around arrivals prior to 9:15am. The only thing I can say for certain is that arriving at 9:15am will get you into line, with no risk of a turn around, and will get you into the park intake for 10am.

Same thing has also been happening at EPCOT.

One of our team was turned away on 3 occasions for arriving a minute before 9:15. It is annoying, because the turn around then puts you about 100 cars back by the time you return.

Really there is no advantage to be gained by arriving prior to 9:15am, so in my view, not worth the risk of being turned around.
Heading there tomorrow... what time should we be lined up to enter the park?
Okay. I'll leave Pop at 9:14. The entrance is that close.
I'm staying at Beach Club in a few weeks. Will the Skyliner get me to DHS by 1000?

If you don’t care about trying to ride Runaway Railway before 10, then showing up at parking at 9:15 works just fine.

I still recommend for anyone on Crescent or Ubering to access the park via the main walkway around 9 (drop off at Boardwalk or the Speedway Gas Station). It all but guarantees that you will be one of the first few people in line for the entire park.

People driving from Pop should be driving out of their parking space at 9:10.

We may just switch to an Epcot day. This doesn’t sound worth all of the anxiety.

Especially if you’ve never done Runaway Railway and/or Rise, I’d recommend holding onto DHS and doing something like this:
Plan to be pulling up to the toll booths around 9:10 (they shouldn’t turn around, but if they do, you should still be able to make it back by 9:15, just keep keeping right (right out of the exit, right onto world drive, first exit get off and turn right, and finally one more right onto Victory Way to come back).

Once there, you should be walking up to the park sometime between 9:30 and 9:45. Choose to either try to do some Toy Story rides or the sunset rides. When 9:58 rolls around, make sure you have good reception and prepare to go for the Boarding passes.

Shortly after that, if lines are still short where you are then ride something else, if not either walk to the Crescent Lake Resort area or Skyliner to the Barefoot Bay Resort Area (Riviera and CBR) to relax a little bit and maybe even grab a bite to eat.

Then, you can head back to DHS after an hour or two or whenever you are called back for Rise.Once back in Studios, just bounce around between attractions you want to do (both RnRC and Runaway will likely have lines slightly spilling out of their established queue which is appox. 20-30 min wait). Muppets, Star Tours, Aliens, and usually Mania will be walk-ons with the others hovering between a 20-40 min actual wait time. The more the day goes on, the less crowded everything will get until ~6 where everything other than Slinky and Runaway should be a walk-on.

I think it's definitely worth it. It's annoying because the waits are "high" at the beginning so it feels like there's nothing easy to do. You can do everything, it will probably just take more walking than usual. Like Magic Feather said, a break in the late morning or at lunch is nice.

By mid-afternoon waits will drop. If it's open until 8:00, you can actually do pretty much every ride in the afternoon. The downside there is only having one shot at a boarding group.

I think it depends on how much you care about the rides at Hollywood Studios.

It'd be pretty tough to convince me it was worth the ticket price to go to DHS right now if I wasn't guaranteed a boarding pass for RotR. I'd like to ride MMRR, and Tower of Terror is always fantastic, but there's very little else worthwhile at DHS for me. Slinky Dog is the only ride I'd get on in TSL even with no waits, and I have no interest in RnRC. The rest of Galaxy's Edge is fine but not anywhere I can spend more than a couple of hours, and that would be stretching it.

Also, I think I already brought it up in another thread, but the Rise preshow spacing was reworked to incorporate another group (formerly 6, now 7 groups). This was made possible by the installation of plexiglass in the central pillars of the ITS, rework placement in the briefing room, and contributions by viewers like you. Thank you

I was in group 5 the past 2 visits, one behind plexiglass and one infront of plexiglass in the transport shuttle. Moving group 5 in front of Bek is a huge upgrade, I got an awesome view of the AA which was previously behind glass.

Right on. I weighed HS against what I'd be doing at Epcot. I enjoy all the rides at HS except Aliens. At Epcot, Test Track and Soarin were the only rides of interest to me. And with a partially shuttered World Showcase, I didn't see much value there right now.

Either way, it's probably not a great sign for Disney that there are guests writing off entire parks as not worth the price of a ticket.
