Star Wars Park?

I'm not Iger's biggest fan but, in fairness, if I were him right now nothing would wipe the smile of my face.

Kathy Kennedy and JJ Abrams look to be on course to more than deliver with the film, now Iger himself has to deliver with the parks. If anything Star Wars is just going to get bigger, Iger has the biggest film franchise in the world and its fanatical fanbase in his back pocket and now really has to go all out with it.

The trailer has got me excited for the eventual parks announcement, in itself it should be an event and build real momentum as we move towards December and the promise that elements of The Force Awakens will make their way in to the soon-to-be-rebranded DHS and beyond. Anything they announce is going to overshadow everything else they have planned or are building, they have to deliver.

It looks like JJ is going to Deliver an excellent movie - going back to old school Star Wars. I am thankful that Disney put the brakes on the Star Wars attractions a few years back because they probably would have just put out average rides. After seeing Potter Land up the road, Disney knows they have to get this land right and leap frog over Potter land. It can be a game changer and make it the must see park.
The most recent push for more Star Wars was well after the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Disney has also yet to surpas the 16 year old Amazing Adventures of a Spider-Man. Why would they suddenly care so much about outdoing Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey half a decade later? They held off on Star Wars because theme parks are supposed to be subordinate to the Studio.

As much as I don't even want to acknowledge WDW vs Uni- I'll bite. Spider man didn't impact the attendance to the swell and buzz that Harry Potter did. The imagineers didn't publicly take a tour and go ride spider man to see what a marvel it was (no pun intended). Harry Potter is a legit land. Spider man is a legit ride. One is more impressive to Disney than the other both in scale, merchandise sales, and attendance draw.

That all said-
Of course a Star Wars thread will turn into a WDW vs Universal thread. Don't you guys get tired of this? It's like going to the same restaurant and ordering the same thing every night.

Ok, having dabbled on a production team in the live entertainment/seasonal haunted attraction world for a time several years ago, some of the "wonder" of "how do they do that?" has faded away when I see effects at WDW - and movies nowadays, it's tons of CGI.

Now... Click below and at the 2:40 mark... MY. JAW. DROPPED.

How in the h*ll did they do that with that droid on stage? Magnets? No clue...part of me doesn't want to know.

What makes me excited for everything (movie, parks, etc), is that once I saw that seemingly impossible droid roll onto the stage (and Solo's "we're home Chewie"), I felt all of that wonder.

I'm wide eyed, believing, and a kid again.

But the reality is projects during Iger's tenure have been dragged out forever (avatar) so it might be 7-10 years before we see the finished lands and attractions open to the public.

Before my father passed, he would joke he was the biggest star wars fan of all times. Truth be told he went to watch empire strikes back 5 times, he went each time between shifts durring his residency at the Baptist hospital in Winston Salem, nc. He fell asleep each time. The last time he took me. I was three, he said an employee woke him up and asked is to leave because I was crawling the floor eating popcorn off it and yelling.
He always talked about the real action in those first three movies. That modern movies didn't have that "feel" because they seem mostly computer generatedI guess I never got his significance about it until I watched the video of the droid rolling out on stage. Quite amazing to see. Just made me a star wars fan. Thanks for the vid.

Did you see the moment in the panel where they said thank you to Iger because he was the guy who reached out to find the company that could make this technology for the film possible? So that physical droid happened partly due to him?

No, I'm not a pro-Iger person before I get labelled as such... I just thought that bit was interesting, especially when noting the feelings of wonder when seeing it- when such feelings from fans are often associated with Iger not being able to "get".

If there's one thing Iger gets right outside of pleasing shareholders- it's the film portion. Between saving the Pixar debacle, the marvel purchase & rebranding, and with lucasfilms/Star Wars- and Most importantly the new Renaissance of Disney Animated- it's hard to argue he is nothing but successful in that realm.

He definitely doesn't "get" parks, but he doesn't have to. He just needs to get the right people in the right jobs, like he's done with Lassiter and the film side, and give them the budget to be successful (like Avengers and Star Wars)
