Disney World will break ground on Star Wars lands in 2016

Construction will start on Star Wars lands at both Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando and Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., next year.
The groundbreaking dates were announced by Walt Disney Co. Chief Operating Officer Tom Staggs at an investors conference Thursday.
No opening date was given.
"This will be I think perhaps the most immersive land we've ever built," Staggs said of the upcoming project. "We want people to feel like they've stepped into the world of Star Wars and so that's really sparked our imaginations and it's got people fired up."
Disney announced last month that it will build a 14-acre Star Wars land and an 11-acre Toy Story area at Disney's Hollywood Studios — the largest overhaul ever within an existing Walt Disney World theme park. Experts say they expect it to take several years before Disney's Hollywood Studios' complicated and costly new expansion becomes reality. No price tag has been provided, although costs for expansion on both coasts is expected to be in the billions.
Disney's plans are expected to remake Hollywood Studios from what many tourists consider an afterthought into a major destination unto itself. Star Wars in particular is considered Disney's way to strike back at Universal Orlando's wildly successful Harry Potter lands. Disney will give Hollywood Studios a new name but has not revealed it yet.

That's great news. Maybe they will aim to open in 2019. It would make sense to aim to open it right after the end of the sequel trilogy. If that is well recieved hype for this will be at unseen levels (which may be the case anyways).

I went back to review the theory of where the new lands would be and one thing I noticed is that the Streets of America was not under either overlay. I wonder if SWL will actually use up more of the SoA space instead of expanding out into the parking lot.

Also, a general question: in the past, has construction (or at least demolition and ground clearing) started before the official ground breaking?
short answer, yes... groundbreaking ceremony was 1/10/14...
the google earth pro shot (1/17/14) shows work area already marked out, construction trailers in place and receiving materials... AND the new theatre already dried in.(new theatre offscreen, sorry)

and you can see the groundbreaking 'site' in the picture... that pile of soil just east of the NE corner of the construction parking area... a bucket full of soil from a front loader, so the suits can stick a shovel in it.... LOL

The Osborne Lights announcement didn't necessarily say it would be Star Wars or Toy Story...they did hint at other unannounced experiences. I'm leaning towards the unannounced.

The same thought came to me. With the entertainment at Streets of America closing I wonder if our map of placement might get shifted to the left a bit.

I know that 2016 is only 3.5 months away, but I feel like all the plans should be drawn up, the construction crews lined up, and the permits pulled so that as soon as they announce the plans, they can break ground within the next week.

Admittedly, I know nothing about large scale construction projects, so can anybody fill me in as to why they don't do this?

Probably because the construction is controlled by WDI, and the announcement by Marketing. Marketing is going to make the announcement when they feel it is most beneficial, even if things aren't actually ready to start.

I would not be surprised if the stock takes a large dip or the company is down rated, we see that which is "unannounced" become announced. The is still a lot of real estate planned to be "redeveloped".

Then they likely would have just said 2017. It is happening because they are confident of success beyond their wildest speculation. IMO.

2019 would allow additional content at the MK for the 50th should they choose. Again IMO.

The giant has awakened.
Yes, bummed about the Osborne Lights but something had to give for the expansion to get underway. I believe that they have a solid game plan in place and we will start to hear more and more announces soon. The Indy stunt show might be the next thing up. Once this project is done, it will be another great park like DAK. And your correct, the giant has awakened.
