I’m calling it now. ROTR opens on 7/17. Disneyland’s 69th anniversary. 😜

You meant July 18th I presume, since that was Disneyland's Opening Day.

I predict August 9th or (will it be August 12th?). Disney won't have to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ride with alcoholic ghosts. Plus by distracting everyone, they can close the HM extra early this year!

All I care is that it's open before my tickets expire and before I have to go back to PA (I can't remember which comes first, but they're both in August).

Is it just me, or was this a bit of dumb idea to open ROTR later.

It is the plan that allows Disney to maximize its profits on the major investment in Galaxy Edge. And allow the RotR to open when the ride can be completed properly (not rushed) and tested to operate correctly. And yes, soft openings will be offered, and can be done easily with the rest of the land open. Then Disney can pick a day for a press event and call it the official opening. (Think the reopening of the World of Color as an example).

Wow to me this is pretty much great news!!! This opening up weeks in advance than most people predicted.

I know some people are bummed about ROTR, but its probably going to open in June or July but if they say that now it will stop a lot of people from going at opening (but who are we kidding lol). I love the reservation idea as well. This is a smart way to keep the hysteria to a minimum, at least at the beginning. The fact they specifically says until June 23rd sounds like its temporary only. Personally I would do it for the whole summer or at least through August.

Basically June is being done as a soft opening and probably will open ROTR not too long after that unless there are some real issues with it. But I suspect they are too afraid of saying when its ready until they fully know its ready. Its better to warn people now instead of telling them afterwards.

Feeling pretty disgruntled myself! We planned our first-and-only family visit to Disneyland (flying across 3 time zones to get there) for late August, largely because we thought we could squeeze in a trip just before the kids have to go back to school, but after the SW land excitement and crowds had a little time to die down. Now we're looking at the prospect of either a half-finished land (I know there will be places to shop and drink blue milk, but for my kids, half the attractions = half the land!), or a just-opened-second-attraction that will trigger big crowds all over again. Our airfare is booked and non-refundable so there's no way to adjust now: we'll just have to make the best of it and adjust our expectations. Since we've never been to DL/CA, there will still be quite a few other things that are new to us.

If this is your first time to DLR, trust me you guys are going to have a huge ball either way. There are so many new things for you to see or do it won't matter that much end of the day. GE won't be half finished, the entire land will be open, just not one of the rides (but yes a major one). But I suspect it will be open by August anyway. Notice they didn't say ROTR is being delayed at WDW, only DLR. And SWL opens Aug. 29th there so I suspect it will be open before then in California as well. They are being cautious.

But yes, prepared for it to be swamped lol. There is nothing you can do about that if you're going in August. But the good thing is you will have an idea of what the crowds will be like a few months ahead of time and can strategize things better but if you are there at least 3 days you should be able to do everything you want, not counting SWL since its hard to say how that will go now.

I’m pretty sure they’ve clarified that RotR is being delayed at WDW also.

I can't get on board with the hysteria here. Are we really thinking they aren't going to further explain the reservation system? That they are going to randomly open RotR one day with no prior announcement? That limiting the number of people who can enter the land in advance for a few weeks will be bad for crowd control and guest relations? That people will be angry when they go to SWL on June 10th and can "only" ride Falcon and tour the entire land when previously we thought the land wouldn't be open at all until later in June?

Yeah there is nothing to be hysterical about. Disney knows what its doing. Its stagnating the crowds a bit. I just have to laugh, people were predicting the worst that it was going to be 10+ hour lines the first month so Disney has figured out a civil and strategic way to do it. I actually said they WOULDN'T do a reservation system but now that they are this is probably for the best at opening. Then slowly open it up for everyone once the hardcore had their fill.

As for ROTR, that will probably come in June and July anyway. But as you said most people were thinking it wasn't going to open at the end of June the earliest so if ROTR opens around there what's the big deal? Just go then if you really want to do it first time you go.

I think Disney chose well with their phased opening. It will really help with the crowd problems. Disney is smart and I am glad they've learned from what Universal has done and from their own issues with openings. This could be a promising way to take care of the problem.
