So... you think a movie that "only" makes $110 million its first weekend isn't going to eventually make its budget?
And you don't think Solo will make its budget back? Come on, really?
Initial budget is probably around $200 million. Double that for marketing. Probably another $50 for reshooting the vast majority of the movie. Take out 10-20% of whatever it makes for the theater chain's cut. No, I don't think it will make its money back and if it does it won't be enough for Lucasfilm to be happy with the return.

With reshoots it came in at $250 Million. Also they didn't spend $200 Million for marketing, sorry but wrong. At most they've spent $25-50 Million on marketing. So that comes up to $300 Million.

Even if it only makes $100 Million this weekend, that is 1/3 of its budget back already. It'll make the other 2/3 in a couple weeks. And if it doesn't they can always keep it in theaters longer.

Point is it'll make back its budget.

You're kidding, right? Do you seriously not realize how much movies spend on marketing? On average it's double the budget of the movie. Not always, like in the cases of smaller indie films, but usually. And with big blockbusters sometimes it's even more than double the initial budget. $5 million went just into having one Super Bowl ad. The cost for marketing is ridiculous with these movies.

I know, pretty weak train of thought. It's a shame because it really is an enjoyable movie. The fanbois want to see it fail, like they tried to do with TLJ.
I like The Last Jedi ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The reason why it costs so much is because they are now promoting films 9-12 months before release. They didn't start promoting Solo until Super Bowl. So they've only been promoting this film for 3 1/2 months. Which means if we use your numbers of double for a normal film of 12 month promotion, you have to cut that by 3/4s for this film. That puts it right in there about $50 Million.

The majority of the promotions come in those last few months with TV spots, corporate tie-ins, and other promotional pushes. Before that it's mostly nothing more than the trailer playing in front of other movies, often even movies by the same company.

Especially since many movies add quite a bit of cash I to their earning when television rights are included as well as video release.
Many of these movies that don’t do well in theaters end up getting a new life after they leave the big screen

Which since Solo had ZERO marketing/promotion before Super Bowl they have spent significantly less this time around. So no they didn't spend double on marketing/promotion for Solo.

I enjoyed Solo. It was a good solid western with lots of action and twists. You see growth in the Solo character and his growing friendship with Chewie. You see how optimistic he starts out being and how he learns to be a smuggler. Its not an epic movie like the trilogies but more of a small heist movie. It was a lot of fun and cleaver.

Its worth seeing and enjoying regardless of the internet trolls that think its hip to hate all things Star Wars.

Glad you enjoyed it. Just seeing the Falcon all clean and new is worth it.

They have not spent the same amount on marketing/promotion as they did for say TLJ. All because the marketing didn't start until Feb 4th.

If you believe they spent over $250 million in 3 1/2 months for marketing/promotion, you are crazy.

Btw, I was wrong. I just looked it up, the promotional blitz didn't even begin until April 25th, before that it was just the trailers. So now really if anyone thinks they spent over $250 Million in one month of promotion/marketing, well that is just crazy.

I also found it to be remarkably family friendly for what could have been a gritty look at the underbelly of sleazy scum and villainy in the galaxy. Compared to Rocket Racoon-levels of coarseness, even the odd Lando & L3 relationship is relatively clean.

Don’t let the too-cool crowd hear this, but this is essentially a classic PG, like the original Star Wars was.

I hate to break it to you but this is the Galaxy's Edge thread, if you wanna go talk about SOLO go to the threads already made about it and stop filling this one up just because there isn't much news atm.
