I have to say, for all the corners Jurassic Park backed Disney into when building their own Dinosaur ride, Universal never really hit a home run with the property.

The creative potential for a ride based off the Jurassic Park premise is off the charts; you'd think a big, epic Jurassic Park ride could easily land in the Top 10 themed attractions worldwide if they'd just commit. Instead they're all kind of weird and surprisingly lame given the subject matter. Imperfect though it is, I'd take Disney's "Dinosaur!" over them any day.

Probably worth noting that I haven't ridden Velocicoaster, so it's excluded from this - but that's also very clearly trying to do something different from what I'm talking about here.

I think Jurassic Park River Adventure is better than Dinosaur. It's probably my favorite ride at Universal.

With that said, it's definitely nowhere near as good as it could be.

It would be still crap cause we all know Disney doesn't know how to build good coasters.

I don't think it's that they don't know how. It's not that difficult to build an intense coaster.

There's just no real reason for Disney to build one. It doesn't fit their main market of families and kids, and there are dozens of better options in the US for people who just want to ride roller coasters -- they can't really compete for that target audience. It would also detract from the elaborate theming that generally sets Disney apart from other parks; there aren't many places at WDW where you could install a giant coaster that would fit the theme and not diminish the area.

Most of the ride is clunky and in dire need of improved scenery and animatronics, but I still like it.

The final drop with the T-rex charging towards you still holds up. Never mind the plot logic of why its even in that spot to being with, it just works. It's one of the most iconic things at Universal.

It could definitely use an overhaul with more plants etc. and better AAs, no doubt about that.

They'll just end up changing it to the Jurassic World ride they have at Hollywood though, unfortunately.

Disney's got a different coaster philosophy than Uni.
Disney tries to keep its coaster accessible to a broader age range than Uni.
Disney wants the whole family to be able to ride.
Uni's ok in aiming for the thrill at the exclusion of the extreme younger and older age groups.

Indeed. And let's not forget the "more family friendly" mantra.

"Thrill rides" have height requirements that exclude younglings even if they want the thrill.

And three of the four parks barely have enough rides as it is, and so, more rides with more height requirements is out of the question.

And I think Disney is quite happy about not encouraging hordes of teenagers looking for the next big coaster.

Yes. The original / basic Disney concept is to offer entertainment options for the young (not just age wise), parents and Grandparents (the older crowd) IF thrill roller coasters are your thing go to Universal, enjoy.

The more extreme the coaster, the more difficult - to impossible it is to theme it the way Disney has usually done things.
Of course, Disney itself has broken some or their former theming rules with Barnstormer, Slinky, and Tron.

Stateside at least. China's version took it to a whole new level

Barnstormer used to have more theming when the actual barn was still there filled with the World of Motion chickens (Who’ve since been moved to POTC).

How did the discussion on the apparent lackluster execution on the Galactic Starcruiser get deflected to a conversation on the Velocicoaster? It seems the latter is a success and securing an immediate and appreciate return on its investment. It's an open question as to whether the same could be said to the former - the topic of this conversation - but it's not looking good, in the short or the longer term.

I don’t know how it happened but talking about Velosicoaster (and chickens!) seems like an improvement on this thread to me.
