I walked out of the theater tonight very disappointed. Not necessarily because the film was bad (I thought it was okay, but had a lot of problems, much like Force Awakens), but because I was banking on this film to convince me that the new Star Wars films are "worth it". It didn't. It almost makes me feel heartbroken how there's been 3 new Star Wars films now and I didn't like any of them. The new films all just seem like messes to me. Makes me wish Lucasfilm was never sold.

NOW THIS is what I wanted from the Force awakens. Also the not so subtle nod of tearing down most of what even made the force awakens passable was another nice touch. BRAVO RIAN! BRAVO! Seriously I left the film filled with hope for the future of the saga.

Have you seen something called the prequel trilogy and if so how does this paragraph exist.

There seem to be some disconnect between critics and die hard fans. A few youtube reviews from sw fanatics are not just angry but livid. I don't believe all the negativity due to critics many times get it right and so far the critics mostly enjoy it, and I know one person who has seen it themselves. While they do have a few complaints they still thought the movie was alright and much better then episodes one and two.
Fanboys are going to HATE this film and I for one am SO PLEASED ABOUT THAT. Because crack theories on who is who from what 3rd print comic from 1990 don't make a compelling saga. Story does. And that is what the last jedi NAILS.

The movie is definitely the most complex Star Wars movie to date - and that is why it's one of, if not my favorite Star Wars film.

There are visuals, a few in particular, that will forever be etched in my mind as just incredible shots that made my jaw drop. Rian Johnson nailed it for me.

After watching the film and seeing some of the fan negative reviews, a lot of it stems from having a certain expectation going into the film, or wanting A,B,C to happen, and the film not giving them what they wanted. There are many surprises in this so if you haven't seen it yet, it's best going in fresh so try to avoid spoilers.

The salt in the air is something I can still vividly see etched in my mind. Can't say the same for many if not all of the locales from Force Awakens (all pale copies of already iconic areas from other star wars films). As for the "fan" reaction it stems from people wanting their crack theories to have been vindicated. And it seems like Rian very much and sternly said "no" and I cannot applaud that decision more.

I found it to be a very mixed bag, so I guess I felt "eh" on it overall. It had moments but I found significant chunks dragged and were a complete mess, especially around the middle. This includes the side story involving Finn and Rose, which I had little interest in. A standout performance from Mark Hamill though, he really kept the movie worth sitting through and paying attention for me. In fact the acting is pretty great all around (I even ended up liking Laura Dern's character), but Mark in particular was fantastic to see again. And of course Carrie Fisher was wonderful and will be dearly missed.

But as for the core story, it's just not as solid throughout. As I said it has its moments of intrigue. But some of the character motivations in particular were poor and I was bored and let down by some of the "twists". Lots of dead ends and nonsense. I'll wait to elaborate until more people have seen it.

Those are my preliminary thoughts just a short while after seeing the movie.

I can't agree more.

Not that I didn't want Lucas sold...though he's getting some vindication in my mind...but that they make this so damn hard.

For 20 years...they can't seem to put together a movie with an unlimited amount of resources and not fail completely with an element of basic storytelling:
1. The central plot has been ok, but the dialogue, casting, and acting style is awful and completely negates the movie (prequels)
2. The visuals are good, and they have some good acting (relatively speaking)...but there really is no central story at all. Not even dumbed down to a kid level...just nonexistent.

I'm an older carmudgeon...make no mistake...so I'll admit bias. But there just isn't any legitimate way to go with this now...as in the next two movies really don't create any interest in the franchise. A bad backstory nobody really wants and whatever they expect JJ abrams to do - which when they fired treverow recently it all makes sense. He probably saw the last jedi and said "what exactly would you like me to do with were this thing ended?"

...and that would be a common sense question.

And honestly...i think disney is paying off the critics or had Russian hackers take over their emails...I would expect some good reviews...even a majority...but not what's out there.

What exactly does any of that mean?

1. Did you see the movie?
2. What do YOU think of it?

I think fanboys will hate this film...but not for the reason stated.

Honestly...and let's cut it to the bone...return of the Jedi looks (still) like a way better movie to this day than anything tried since. It was shot in the right style with a story that was plausible in its in own genre...we've only ever seen glimmers here and there since.

I think one of the central problems is that these movies aren't shot for American audiences anymore...
They do too much service to foreign release (really made so they are visual tv style shows with no backstory or emotional attachment NEEDED...and that's a mistake) and to whizz bang, low attention span.

The original movies still hold up...you stop and watch when they're on tv in passing. Nothing since has. Only rogue 1 even feels slightly right to me.
