Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi NO SPOILERS!!!!

As positive and hyped as the Twitter reviews sound (they're certainly not helping my sleepless nights between now and next week ;)) I'm remaining cautiously optimistic as well.

TFA was also hailed as "The best since Empire..", and while I certainly found it to be head & shoulders above prequel level, I was a bit underwhelmed at it's resemblance to ANH's storyline, a main protagonist who was already too perfect from the get-go to actually watch their character grow, and more questions when leaving the theater afterward than feelings of excitement. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the movie very much. But it was Rogue One, not TFA, that REALLY brought Star Wars back to life for me. Hopefully this one will do the same.

I agree on all fronts...

I'm more harsh on TFA...

1. Disney rebooted probably the last movie that ever would need it: everybody knows Star Wars...retelling it with slightly better dialogue and real effects doesn't eliminate the stain of the Professor Bunsen (Lucas) and Beeker (McCallum) years...

2. Abrams doesn't want to be labeled the reboot guy...so he reboots everything. The third trailer for the movie has more emotional depth than the movie. I'm not kidding...watch it.

Now what's he gonna do for this next one? I love Jedi, but it's a punt and I don't need more ewok raves.

3. Ford was cranky and wanted a check and abrams did it...was regarding Henry that big of a deal to him?
How dare Lucas saddle poor Harrison with the burden of a Billion dollar career? Clown...go fly a plane...let's see if you land it...

4. Kasdan must have been there in name only to write the script...that script was pretty well "fleshed out" in 1975, Larry.

Now as far as this week goes...I hope to hell that they don't make it too corny, or too whizz bang, or too introspective...the balance will be key...

And if they take out my favorite bit character (heard a rumor)...it better be like an absolute boss he should be...

Go back in time to October 8th when tickets went on sale?:p

Your best bet now if you want to go opening weekend it to find a place that still does general admission and get there super early.

Plenty of seats open around here... you can't get a good seat at 7pm on Thursday... or 8pm on Friday... but off beat times still have seats around here. We just bought tickets for 330 on Friday.

I just dumped 7:00 tickets on Friday and bought 7:15 Thursday due to schedule conflict...wasn't hard.

The prebuzz/slated for this - while huge - isn't what it was 2 years ago. It was teen "trendy" then...because the movie going market is frankly stupid. If they burnt themselves in 2015 for a reboot with geriatric Harrison ford...then it's their loss.

I don't care what the box office take is - to be frank - the phantom menace did great and it was terrible...jedi beat empire...rogue one had 10x the Star Wars feel/heart that TFA did.

I want it to have that characteristic feel. I want to see it on tnt in five years and find myself ignoring housework and watching it inexplicably for the 121st time on a Saturday in September.

I don't need fast and the furious. And disney gets enough money from me in other avenues so I don't care how many tickets are sold. They'll do fine.

Here it's just math.... every theatre showing it 5-7 times a day. There are even theatres with 3+ showing before noon. Simply put... tons of supply. Most show great demand too.

I have nine theatres within 10miles of me and all but 3 are all reserved seating. In that I have both lie-MAX and true dual 4K laser lit 6 story tall IMAX too. I count 99 screens in that range . I count 63 showings on Thursday's (not including special showings like marathons, early access, etc). And 97 showings on Friday. I probably missed some too... and that's just within 10 miles of me :)

Still was hard to find prime seats at a decent time. - but not impossible to see the film.

Similar here.. most theaters are offering in a minimum of 3 different formats, a few only 2. Out of 15 theaters that I’d go to, all but one is reserved seating.
If I had more flexibility in show times then I’m sure I could have found better seats, but the 7-9pm showings.. almost impossible... and not possible at the several I checked for Friday night.

It’s still hyped, and selling, just as well as last time.. where I live anyway.

I wanted to post a fair warning that plot leaks are now apparently hitting the web. Assuming they are legit anyways (they are being taken as real and seem to have some credibility). I accidentally read some of them. Someone even spoiled Episode 7 for me on these forums before the mods got to it (a troll committing account suicide), so be very careful of this one as well.

I'm not going to post any of the spoilers here at all, but I have a basic impression of the plot leak that I will share in spoiler tags below. Just in case you still don't want even a spoiler free opinion to influence your viewing experience.

I gather that some of the plot leaks were due to an apparent hack (or perhaps a breach of trust) of a private conversation between a Vanity Fair employee and a friend (the employee has said she's upset the conversation was leaked, which indicates it's legit). These details lined up with some separate leaks sharing some of the same information, but also some additional scoops. Again I won't post any of the leaks here, and maybe there's still a small chance they are fake and are being planted online to misdirect people.

I still intend to watch the movie, but I will say that the leaks have left a very sour taste in my mouth and turned me off. It makes the movie sound boring and massively disappointing IMO, and renders much of the buildup from Episode 7 completely pointless and empty. Sounds like many of the other people who read the spoilers feel similarly.

There have been a lot of VERY positive impressions from the people invited to the premier, but I am inclined to take those with a huge grain of salt due to Disney's media spin machine.

I'm probably setting myself up to be flamed, but I was wondering what the GA/casual fan opinion of Reylo is? For those not familiar with it, it's the pairing of Kylo Ren and Rey. I do support it, because I'm very much convinced Rey is not a Skywalker, and the whole dynamic has a reverse Anakin/Padme vibe to it. For Kylo to stay dark is just uninspired storytelling, at least in my opinion- he's already hit rock bottom and for him to just be the full-on evil villain is bland. Snoke is the big bad, and why put all the effort into making it obvious Kylo is conflicted to just have him stay dark?

I'm probably going to get labeled as an "abuse apologist" and "racist" for posting this, as people on other sites who publicly support this generally are, but I am genuinely curious as to what you all think.

Seeing it with my parents on Friday. When we went to see Rogue One last year, we arrived a little too late (still 10 minutes before the trailers started though) and couldn’t get seats together. I ended up sitting with my mom, and my dad sat elsewhere.... and they both fell asleep. My dad wants to see it at 7:15 on Friday, and despite my concerns that he’ll fall asleep again, he said that we’re getting there earlier so I can keep both of them awake. If you say so, Dad.

The Wall Street Journal has a review that actually mentions some plot details that I think were pretty unknown. CNN’s review of the film wasn’t great. They said it’s closer to Attack of the Clones than Empire. Both reviewers think that the movie is too long and drags in the middle.

I'm wondering if there are two versions of the movie being reviewed. While many suggest "breathtaking shocks and plot twists", others, such as Cary Darling of the Houston Chronicle say:
"The Last Jedi" may not possess its immediate predecessors' pleasant shock of the new, nor is it a stylistic detour from what's expected."

I think the difference can be summed up as Star Wars fans vs Movie critics.

I know which faction I belong to so I am looking forward to my Thursday night.:)
