Star Tours vs. Forbidden Journey

Honestly like Star Tours it's really stupid to compare the two. One is a simulator one is not. It's like comparing Dinosaur and Peter Pans Flight or GMR and Soarin. They are way too different.

Just had to know this thread was coming...it won't be long before the more obnoxious members of this forum dismissively brand those with the audacity to prefer Star Tours over Forbidden Journey as stupid, pixie dust sniffing fanboys.

I eagerly await the opportunity to experience both of these rides for the first time next trip, and I shall withhold my opinions until that time. Flashy technology alone does not make a good ride, and that goes for both Disney and Universal.

If this forum had a "rec" or "+1" or "like" function, I'd use it right here.

I was absolutely blown away by Forbidden Journey the first time I rode and the subsequent times. However, now that I've ridden it so many times its actually kind of lost some of it's impact on me. Once you get over the technology behind the ride, you start to notice things, like the blurriness of the screens, the fact that theres not much of a story and more of "lets bombard you with things you remember from the movies getting in your face", or the lackluster cliche ending - "its caving in!" and having the characters clap and cheer for us even though we didn't really do anything.

I can honestly say that Star Tours II has much better re-ridability now due to the multiple sequences.

... I'd probably still go with Forbidden Journey, but I do think Star Tours II is a top-notch ride.

I didn't say compare the two. I asked which one you liked better. Maybe try reading next time?

Absolutely right. Especially the bolded part.

The story of Forbidden Journey is mainly in the queue of the attraction. Portrait gallery especially. Disney has some attractions that are light on story and heavy on detail. As for the blurry screens...they're 3D projections. I'm sure they could have gone for a crisp 2D look but you get an amazing feeling of depth without using 3D glasses. Considering how fast you're "flying" the blur doesn't bother me a bit.

I haven't experienced the new Star Tours yet, so I can't say. Wait, yes I can say. Forbidden Journey. It's a dark ride, simulator, coaster, and robotic arm attraction all in one. No theme park attraction will ever beat that for me.

It is not in any way, shape, or form a "coaster." Wow.

Its pretty obvious that you cant compare the two. One story is about Magic/Fantasy stuff while the other is a Space theme. Comparing Star Wars and Harry Potter is like comparing Football to Futbol, its not comparable.

I agree. They are two entirely different beasts. If you do compare them, Harry Potter easily beats out Star Tours, but again, they are not really the same. Compare Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland when it opened to Harry Potter when it opened and that is something that can be compared. Both of those are simulators on a track with elaborate theme and story and both use an outside brand of sorts.

Sure it is. As much (or as little) as it is a dark ride, simulator, and robotic arm attraction.

A mix of all those four elements, that about sums it up. A dark ride consisting of a flight simulator mounted on a robotic arm going on a track.

Some people will dig pretty deep to find something to complain about, apparently.

I didn't complain about anything, the thread is asking which of the two rides is more enjoyable, comparing the two rides answers the question. Just because I do not feel Disney's new attraction lived up to Universal's Harry Potter ride does not mean I didn't enjoy the attraction. The fact that I felt it was not as impressive as the hype indicates doesn't mean I did not find the attraction enjoyable, it just states that I do not feel it is on the same level. A simulator cannot be fairly compared to a ride experience. What this boils down to is the same ride format upgraded.

A simulator can only accomplish so much of an experience. The multiple story lines are nice, the 3-D effects are pleasant, but the attraction does not deliver the same type of experience as forbidden journey. The original ride was built in a format that made it easy to change, it was stated in the press release of the time I believe or some time after. After a couple decades of the same thing, multiple scenarios and 3-D are not enough to really enough to revolutionize a glorified simulator. To compare to an original attraction such as forbidden journey to a revised simulator is not possible, they aren't even in the same league. Star Tours 2.0 is a fantastic ride, a classic that will live on for years to come, but it is not this groundbreaking marvel many imply it to be.

I'm a bigger Star Wars fan than I am Harry Potter, but having ridden both recently, I still would choose the Foribdden Journey. Star Tours is neat but simulator technology is just not modern anymore. NOW, if they had combined scenes/sets with video such as Harry Potter or Spiderman, then yes.. Star Tours would be the winner.

I'd have to disagree with this. I am huge fan of FJ but this is the one part of the ride I was dissapointed with, stopped it being an almost perfect ride. I'd love to see the projection quality get an upgrade, and who knows maybe it will after the Spiderman upgrades.

I'm looking forward to riding the new Star Tours, but it is going to have be at TOT level to challenge FJ.

I went on FJ again last week for the 2nd time. The que line is amazing, as is the ride technology. That being said, I find the ride boring as hell.

That being said, motion simulators do nothing but make me queasy so I doubt I'll care for the new Star Tours.
