Star Tours to close on 8 September 2010 for major refurbishment into Star Tours 2 3D

What does ST2 reopening have to do with MK's 40th anniversary? ST is in DHS not MK so I don't see how a reopening date should be swayed by that.

Its WDW's 40th.

We are getting the half-baked version.

From Screamscape
"3/21/09- While there is no solid timeline set for it yet, there are some issues going on between Disneyland and Disney World management over this new attraction. Disneyland wants the full fledged, crank the up to 11, full of new in-cabin special effects version of Star Tours 2. Orlando on the other hand, always ready to snip away at attraction budgets, is asking for a more bare-bones, no-frills version, and to reuse as much of what’s already installed as possible version. The funny part is that in an effort to push this thing along, both may get their wish, with Orlando being willing to put in the low-budget version while Disneyland installs a version of many cool new effects. What could help or hurt the scheduling here however is just how willing the Oriental Land Company is to get involved in the project as well, providing additional cost-sharing capital to the project which would help them all move into production more quickly."

Thanks TDO.:fork:

Lucas wouldn't agree to that. His insistence on it being a huge overhaul was what caused it to take this long in the first place.

While that story may or may not be true, it is interesting that DL's Star Tours is closing earlier - July 27th. no idea why, though..

WDW waiting for the summer season to be over. DLR can handle a ride being closed at DL. Star Tours being closed at DHS takes a much bigger hit to the parks capacity.
Plus then you can have the same team do the install of its part of the new attraction in both places, since the schedules aren't synced.

Could they be moving staff from one refurb to the other. In other words, once the DL work is done, the team moved to WDW to do the same work? That way they could use a lot of the same creative talent at both sites.

Does anyone know if the simulators will be replaced (at either park)? It's so weak and wimpy by today's standards that I can't imagine them being kept, but...

The staggered start of the project makes perfect sense.

Starting first in DL will make it easier to deal with any problems that may (and usually do) arise. It is always easier to resolve problems when engineering (Imagineering) is close to the shop floor. The second prototype is usually better than the first one, and the build always goes easier.

Let Burbank and DL work the bugs out first.

I have been in Engineering for 20 years.

Relax, it will be fine.

Anyone wonder if the actual opening date (even if it's a soft open) might be June?
It'll be very odd going to Star Wars Weekends 2011 without Star Tours being open...

Let the countdown begin! :sohappy: As a bona fide Star Wars GEEK, I can't wait for the new ride. I'll be taking my last tour to Endor in June. Woohooo!! My sister hates this ride, we'll be down there together; maybe I will be able to convince her to take one last flight with me.

Im so glad it will be open for our July trip. We didnt get to go last year so it will be nice to go 1 (or 10) more times. It will be bitter sweet. I know the ride is out dated and needs a refresh but the original holds a special place in my starwars nerd heart. So all I can say is I really hope it ends up being a great update and not a cheap overlay.

I can't wait. As a major SW fan I am always sad to think how irrelevant the ride is in its current state. Hopefully things will get better after this major refurb. :sohappy:

Whenever there is a huge celebration, each park gets something, be it the smallest thing, so the press has something to write about. I'm sure in just under a year and five months, you'll see somethings added. Even though Fantasyland won't be completed, I'm sure something else may happen at the Magic Kingdom, even if it is something as minor as a new parade or update of an attraction. Think about the new Fantasyland. Possilby the outside of Pooh, Snow White, Peter Pan, and Small World will be all fixed up since everything beyond will be behind walls. Aren't all of these considered in or just touching the Castle walls that are going up?

Disney loves the press and wants them to write more in the travel sections. Adding Star Tours 2.0 for Oct. 1, 2011 makes so much sense. One park down, three to go.
This also goes for DL. DL park will get Star Tours 2.0 and DCA will have the new Little Mermaid ride.
DCL will be getting into the celebration with the launch of the Disney Dream.

Something about 2012. What is so special about 2012 in the Disney Universe? It is going to be such a huge year with DCA getting Carsland and WDW MK getting the new Fantasyland. There will also be a new WDW resort called The Art of Animation Resort. DCL will also launch the Disney Fantasy cruise ship. How about the possibility of something in DL's Tomorrowland happening.

Don't forget all the stuff happening at the overseas parks too.

Synergy at its finest.

Well, the 40th anniversary is October 2011 through September 2012 so most of it takes place during 2012.

Yes
So is the 8th the last day for it or is the 7th the last day?

I guess Im asking if the ride closing on the 8th means will it be closed when rope drops the morning or evening of September 8th?

I love the whole qeue and outside. As for the ride and the simulators, time for an upgrade as being done. Cant wait to see what it looks like when its finished and how the new movie will work with the simulators. With the small screens they currently use, its hard to imagine a 3d effect. Any thoughts on this?
