Greetings all from the Geek Labs

The Stanley Cup, the championship trophy sought by every team in the National Hockey League, will appear in front of Team Mickey's Athletic Club at Downtown Disney Marketplace on May 25 from noon-2 p.m.

The Stanley Cup, one of the oldest trophies in sports, got its start in 1892, when Lord Kilcoursie, an Ottawa hockey player, arrived at an Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association dinner with a message from Lord Stanley, the Governor General of Canada. The message began, "I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada)."

Lord Stanley later purchased a silver cup for about $50 and established conditions to govern the annual competition for the cup. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey club became the first to win the Stanley Cup in 1893. Since then, championship teams have had their names etched onto silver rings fitted to the cup.

This year, the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning will battle the Calgary Flames for the right to hoist Lord Stanley's cup and mark their place in hockey history

Why do you keep saying that?

That's the first time I've said it.

The markets for Tampa Bay and Calgary aren't that high in the US. Hockey finished with very low ratings wise the past couple years. Unless the finals showcased a team like Detroit vs Philadelphia then the ratings may show an increase. Now Canada is a different story. EVERY tv will tune in to CBC to watch "Canada's Team" fight to bring Stanley back to Canada.

It's like the cup wants to stay down here(Lord Stanley needs a tan!)

I think they should just leave it here. That cup is ours!

Go Lightning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maxime29. you are the unfortunate addition to a list of individuals saying the same thing...and to which, I'm sorry.

However...just because history has shown poor ratings in the past, whats to say this won't bring a whole new bunch of fans into the NHL, increasing ratings not just for now, but for future years?

As someone who has been around hockey for the last 19 years ( I am almost 20 now so... ) this final will be particulary bad for ratings. This is just...i dunno, not good hockey, Tampa Bay does not match up well against Calgary's clutch and grab style i just hate to say it. People will tune in to watch players like St. Louis, Modin, and Lecavalier showcase their skills, but will in turn, be watching players like Warrener, Montador, and Gelinas clutching and grabbing and slowing down the game. If for some reason you live in the tampa area, and you have no clue who any of those players are who I just mentioned, then it is prime example on why the NHL is reaping what its sowing by allowing the officials to call play off games different than regular season games. Continuity please:confused:

Tampa is the 13th largest TV market in the country, and i think there will be fantastic rating here. Tampa teams never really are favored nationaly the way teams like the redwings, cowboys, and yankees are. However for the last several years I watched the NHL finals even when the Lightning weren't in it, and I suspect hockey fans will still tune in even though their teams are out. I guess it's just going to be a wait and see on how the ratings turn out, but I don't think disaster is a good word for it, we're a high market team and i think the ratings will show it. I'll however not be helping the ratings since I got myself a ticket and will see it live.

To be honest Tampa really isn't one of the high market teams. Those would be Detroit, Colorado, Toronto, Boston, Vancouver, and maybe New York if they could do something. NOt tampa though

I have to agree with maxime29 on this one. The finals will have horrible ratings this year. This is the second year in a row where two extremely boring teams are playing in the finals. Besides most hockey fans could care less about a series between Calgary and Tampa. Maybe if it was Detroit/Toronto or Colorado/Philadelphia people would care.

I also believe that this will be the last Stanley Cup finals ever. If there is a lock out this year, the NHL will never recover.

I wouldn't call the series boring from a hockey fan's perspective. Both teams provide their share of everything: scoring, hard hitting, great goaltending, etc... A small upgrade from last year's constant neutral zone trap style of play (not to say that there won't be any in the finals). From a regular person's perspective, this wouldn't interest them. "A team from a state where it never snows playing some Canadian team." They would most likely prefer to watch another re-run of Friends. On a note similar to this: I'm sure you all heard that the NHL signed with NBC and ESPN to broadcast games next year (if there is one). The NHL had to lose half the profit from the original TV deal in order to convince ESPN to sign with them. If the ratings had been better and the game maybe presented better, then they would have signed to the same deal, if not more money involved. NBC figures it's worth a shot. They will most likely follow the same ad scheme they have done with the AFL and try to get people interested in the game.

If there is a lock out this year, the NHL will never recover.

The NHL will definately be hurting come September. I can't guarantee something will be done come this time. Either way, you have the WHA resurrecting, along with a GUARANTEED season from the AHL (minor league hockey; some of the best IMO).
