SSE's Big Contradiction

To recap my earlier posts: I love the new Spaceship Earth descent with the video screen photo-capture animation. I encourage everyone to ride it first before forming an opinion (I was disappointed after watching web videos, but really really enjoyed it when I saw it firsthand. It's a much different experience when it is YOU on the screen).

But my biggest complaint is that the content of the descent video is not realistic. With a powerhouse innovator like Siemens on board, why did they go with a fantasy "Jetsons" future instead of a more scholarly look at the technologies that await us? Flying cars are just too far-fetched.

Well, it seems Siemens agrees with me, and they even mention it on the official Spaceship Earth website!

If you click on "Siemens Pictures of the Future", you will find this quote:

You may not see flying cars tomorrow but you will see innovations that will change the world: cars that drive themselves, doctors performing surgery by computer and large cities that convert trash into energy.

Not even the sponsor of Spaceship Earth believes we'll be riding in flying cars!

As I wrote in an earlier post, perhaps the realistic vision of the future is not entertaining enough for a theme park environment. Hovercrafts and self-packing suitcases are much more fun to dream about than environmentally-friendly energy sources.

But I think the "entertainment" of the Spaceship Earth descent video comes from seeing your face plastered on the animation. Why not put my face inside a self-driving automobile, or lying on surgeon's table with my doctor using a computer, or of me loading my garbage cans into a fuel generator?

I think if they kept everything in Spaceship Earth the same--including the retro-cartoony animation--- and simply changed the content of the video to something that is much more realistic in the future, many would not feel as though the descent does not "fit in" with the rest of the attraction.

I really don't think that would change the fact that watching a flash cartoon on a LCD screen is a poor replacement for the nifty 80s-style lighting effects that used to be there.

While I agree with most of what you said concerning the cartoony descent, I'm not sure I'd like a realistic-looking video of my face on a body about to undergo something like open-heart surgery, especially while I'm on vacation!

At its core, SSE is an entertainment attraction, and the jetson-y cartoon approach is consistent with that. It needs to be family friendly, and entertaining.

It's a clever and innovative approach -- and the artwork is carried over into the display area after you disembark.

The approval ratings, by the way, are out of this world (no pun intended) in their post-ride surveys -- so really, its mostly just people online here who are complaining about the changes -- most riders love the changes and the touchscreen video on descent.

The online crowd is never satisfied... LOL.... Honestly, I didn't care for the way the ending looks on video.... but, I am giving it a chance once I see it in person in October....

Except when it puts a girl's face on the cartoon guy's body. I was riding by myself, and I don't know what, if any, effect this has on the darn thing, but yeah, I was kind of offended.

I think they used the retro cartoon because it doesn't have to be updated, the future that never was can't become outdated. (unless we get the flying cars, etc)

We rode the updated SSE for the first time Saturday and really loved it! All of it! The descent has always been lame at best. At least this is entertaining and clever. I disagree with the naysayers.

I would be happy if they would just put an "off" button on the screen. :lookaroun It was fun the first time, but the second time (yawn).

I've seen manners of those first two in some of the videos.

At its core SSE is an inspiring ride that takes us into our past and inspires us about our future - all contained within a structure designed to further those feelings. Merely dismissing it as an "entertainment attraction" is completely off track. That is a better moniker for Turtle Talk. The Jetsony/cartoony ending makes a mockery of that intent.

I also wouldn't be so sure about the guests reaction being that positive, as that is overwhelmingly not the case.

I love it. I practically wet myself laughing every single time I see my face on that little cartoon body. Recently, DH and I have taken to making exaggerated faces for the picture - makes it even funnier.

While it is decidedly more lighthearted than it's predecessor, I love the 'new' SSE narrator and script and I definitely like the descent. I think it makes it more re-rideable, and it's definitely interactive, which isn't a bad thing. I would have like a little more theming on the descent - I can see why they didn't waste money on it, but it is a little bare. I love it anyway! It's right back on our list of must-dos when we go to Epcot.

If you think that there's anything clever about a flash cartoon with robotic butlers and electronic bracelets from which I can order food, I hate you.
